PS3

  • Faster repsonse to remote
  • Plays CDs and SACDs
  • Internet connectivity
  • Almost like a mutlimedia hub
  • Memory stick slots
  • USB connectivity
  • Plays games! (duh, it's a gaming console)
  • Above all, it is almost infinitely upgradeable and expandable like a computer (which it essentially is) and with all the ways to connect other devices to it via USB, wifi, ethernet, and Bluetooth.

SONY BDP-S1
  • Beautiful looking piece of A/V equipment
  • Builit like a tank
  • The best in picture quality: the contrast, color, depth, and resolution are all well above the PS3
  • Upconverts standard DVDs beautifully

On the last few points, the PS3 is also nice-looking, but only second best. The PS3 does put out a great picture and I would have been satisfied to have it as my only Blu-ray player if I had never seen the PQ of the Sony standalone.
So given that you have both, do you think that as a blu-ray disc player the S1 is worth the extra money ( have found it for $790)? I am running a 720p Samsung LCD and Harman Kardon reciever 7.1 channel (no HDMI in on reciever). I should note that this will be my only blu-ray player for a while.
