According to AV Watch, Hayao Miyazaki's latest work Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea will be released in Japan on Blu-ray Disc in December!
The DVD version will be released in July and will include English subtitles, let's hope the same goes for the BD. http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/n...401_80163.html http://blog.affenheimtheater.de/en/2...disc-december/ |

^ If you're in California, then all you have to worry about is if the Blu-Ray will have English subtitles.
EDIT: What the hell? Are they still doing VHS in Japan? Click on that first link and see.

The Blu-ray will almost certainly come out in the US at or around the same time, the theatrical release is in August here, only a bloody year late, but this is the first one with John Lassetter's personal pimpage and they're going to be shouting it out hardcore to the masses. They'll ship the same disc to both countries, so don't worry about whether it'll have english subs. They're far more concenred with keeping Japanese people from importing US discs than Americans importing Japanese. That's why all the Ghibli DVDs carried English subs
I'm suprised by the VHS edition as well, but there's a lot of people in rural areas in Japan who still use it, and Miyazaki movies are one thing everyone agrees on Last edited by Jeff Kleist; 03-31-2009 at 08:13 PM. |

Another must-have blu-ray. I'll wait for the cheaper US release and I hope they'll keep all the features intact.

I'll wait for Blu-ray because I always watch the original language track. I like in a rural area where cool films are never shown, only the blockheaded blockbusters. I've seen so many Japanese films that you'd think I could speak the language by now

That is not for the movie. That price is for the making of blu-ray. There is no pre-order for the actual movie on Blu yet.

The first picture is just the movie (normal edition).
The second picture is the making of documentary --no English Subs. The third is the collector's edition (which includes both of the above).

This release will NOT have the English Dub. It will have English subs. You will have to wait for the domestic release by Buena Vista to get the Dub.

I know. It's not worth it. Hell, even $63 for a Japanese Godzilla Blu-ray is pushing it for me.

Quote:
The release does include the English Dub, its included as an extra, probably because Disney changed all the Japanese text in the film to english. It's stated right in the press release: http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/n...01_312030.html So I'll be picking this up, because I don't want to wait until March 2010 for the NA version Last edited by BlackDevil; 10-28-2009 at 11:19 PM. |

Disney has done that with all the films, going all the way back when their subsidary Miramax did Princess Mononoke. They have the "Viewing Angles" which if you select Japanese audio, it'll display the Japanese characters over the English and the other way around for the English audio.
