I would love for the PS3 to internally decode DTS-MA. I hope they do that instead of just bitstream it.

People should realise that bitstreaming is pointless and that internally decoding is much better.

I disagree; I just spend $1200 bucks on a receiver that is DTS HD-MA capable, and despite of how great the PS3 is, I can't help but believe that a receiver, twice as much as the PS3, must surely do a better job at decoding that stream.

I hope the PS3 will soon be able to bitstream those encodings; although I've read this is technically not possible with it's current HDMI specification. (not sure !?)

It's not up to Sony. DTS hasn't been forthcoming on their software solution.

Currently there are NO software solutions for decoding, only outboard chips.

I thought DTS had got off their ass and started to help Sony?

If they are they've been pretty quiet about it.

The demoed a software solution (for PCs, not the PS3) a few months back, even then they admitted it was a work in progress and should be available "soon". Well...

At least the new hardware solutions are reaching market (1.3a receivers) like my new Onkyo TX-NR905. Unfortunately I don't have the only player that can pass the bitstream (Samsung 1400).

I have a feeling Sony will have one massive update rolled up and call it 2.0 and release it around the year anniversary, so my prediction is mid to late November. Hopefully DTS-MA will be part of that package.

Next firmware update to improve music playback -- but how?

Quote:
Brier Dudley from The Seattle Times is loving the PS3. Not as a games machine, but as an affordable media center. At $399, the upcoming 40GB PS3 will be one of the most affordable and most advanced Blu-ray players around. With its ability to play music, showcase photos, display movies, and more, the PS3 has a great chance of targeting the media savvy with its newer, cheaper model.

Sony will continue to expand upon the media functions of the PS3. According to the report, "within a month, a software upgrade will improve the PS3's interface for music stored and played through the system." However, we don't have any further specifics. Patrick Seybold from SCEA emphasizes that "we haven't made any specific announcements on upcoming firmware." Could enhanced music be a part of the now-mystical 2.0 firmware update?

It will be interesting to see what Sony plans to offer the media hungry in America. While Europe gets PVR capabilities, America has been left out. But, it appears that something will be in the works soon. "Some of that same functionality are things that we're working on here," Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America, told the newspaper.

Kaz Hari talked about this at TGS or E3

He mentioned upscaling bit samples or something of that nature. If anything there has been mention of in game xmb (could play music in game maybe) which would be nice on top of the BD profile 1.1 that accompanies it (the firmware update)

Either the 30th of October (BD Profile 1.1 mandated date) or the 2nd of November (the launch of the 40GB PS3)

PS3's 1.94 firmware adds support for DualShock 3

If you want to experience rumble with your PS3 games as soon as possible, you're going to have to go on a quest of sorts. First, time travel into next month (or wait a couple of weeks) and import a DualShock 3 from Japan. Next, you're going to need the PS3's new firmware, 1.94, but sadly, it isn't available for download yet.

But don't be deterred. Shacknews is reporting that if you pick up Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (the first retail game with built-in rumble support) you'll be able to find 1.94 right there on the disc. Imagine the convenience. Now, unless you have obsessive compulsive disorder, we have no idea why you'd need the firmware weeks before the controller's even out. But at least we know a certain former Double Dare host is going to sleep well tonight.

Mark Summers, the host of the old Nickelodeon show Double Dare has a very bad and well known obsessive compulsive disorder.

They might just keep this minor SS update to game titles that need it so no-one's forced to live without their friendslist until they've updated to a SS that has no use for them.

If you download a PS3 update to a flashdrive, how can you get the PS3 to see it to update?

Make a folder on the flashdrive called PS3 , then inside that make one called UPDATE. Make sure it is uppercase. go to system update, them update via media or something like that.
