At a recent event in New York City, I had some time to speak with John Hight, the studio director of Sony Santa Monica. Yes, those are the "God of War" folks. The interview had a wide range of topics, but because people generally freak out about this sort of thing, the topic of game length came up. The length of "God of War 3," to be specific. Here's the transcript of my conversation with John:

John Hight: We've done a lot of play testing on it. We know, for a really hardcore player, it'll take them longer than it took them to play either of the previous "God of War" games.

MTV Multiplayer: Longer than seven hours?

JH: Oh yeah.

MTV: Considerably longer than seven hours?

JH: I think so.

MTV: Is ten…um…longer? [This is me trying to be sneaky]

JH: Ten is longer, but ten might not be considerably longer! [laughs] It's more than 10 hours.

That's quite a jump from the first two games, which were between 6 and 8 hours long, give or take your skill. Then again, game lengths tend to be a little inflated by developers. Remember when Gearbox said it would take 100 hours to get to level 50 in "Borderlands"?

Well I've never personally ordered from them, but I've seen quite a few AVS members talk about ordering from them. Amazon has been too good to me to buy anywhere else

It's still the same retailer, but they shortened their URL a while back. They carry a wider range of products now, and having 'dvd' in their URL would have been somewhat limiting in terms of conveying what they are to shoppers.

A brief reminder of the basics of Gow III's story. Kratos has forged a fragile alliance with the Titans. He has released them from the imprisoning of the Gods so that they can help him satisfy his lust for revenge. Gow III's begins where II ended. The team of Santa Monica kept their promises when they were talking of "giant levels". We've had the chance to see a few images of the beginning of the game: Kratos is on the back of Gaia, mother of the earth. This titan is covered of forests, streams and waterfalls. She is twice the size of the Eiffel Tower (only point of reference as far as height goes for the french )! Gaia is climbing Olympus when she gets attacked by Poseidon. During this fierce fight, and depending on her movements, the level changes completly. Kratos is therefore on the arm of Gaia horizontaly. But because of its movements Kratos finds himself at one point barely hanging from it. You must constantly adapt to your environment. The power of the Ps3 (TM) allows to reinvent the level design of the game and your advancement in the world. Besides the "living" levels on the titans, you will have to overcome moving puzzles. At one point in the game, Kratos will find himself trapped in a rotating cube made of wood and iron. The problem is, there are spikes springing from the cube. Kratos will need to grapple on a harpy to avoid being shredded. Later on in the game, he will need to find a way out of the Olympus gardens, a mineral and vegetal maze in which he will face the Talos, enormous and very tough statues. Here, every time he activates a lever, the configuration of the maze will change. Gateways move, closing and revealing passageways.
And now, chaos. [Uninteresting stuff] With the Hermes boots, the ghost of Sparta will be able to run on walls. Finally, Kratos will have new impressive attacks. One of them will be to plant a giant sword in the floor to make a giant cyclone appear. [...]
The engine of the game is based on the one of GoW II. But it has been remade and boosted. As a result, there can now be up to 40 enemies on the same screen, against 10 for the previous installments.

From Olypus to Hell Another sequence we've seen starts where the demo ended: after a brief flying sequence, Kratos rushes towards the titan of fire. Once again, you have to avoid the fragments and fire balls coming from the giant. Kratos can not only move up/down and left/right, but he can also make a quick dash. Our hero searches a refuge in a cavern. But the walls of the cave begin to tremble, the roof to crumble, the cave to collapse... Kratos cannot fly here, he must escape by climbing the walls and avoiding the falling rocks. At the last moment, he jumps into another underground gallery and spreads his wings. You probably realize it, Gow III not only satisfied the fans' expecations, it obliterated them. Get ready. Because in March 2010, Olympus will tremble, the Gods will pay, and you will discover one of the most memorable gaming experiences of your life...

Neither God, nor master
For his final adventure, Kratos will have to face an amazing bestiary. Here is a foretaste.


Talos:
Talos are statues made of wood, stone or iron, to which the Gods have given life in order to hunt Kratos without mercy. Think of them as the hero's nemesis. They fight with huge hammers or fractions of pillars. They might move slowly, but only one single blow can be lethal. The more Kratos will hit them, the more they will crumble. The right strategy will be to take their hammer and use it against them.

Satyre:
The Satyres are half-man half-goat creatures. Those are very fast enemies, who are constantly moving. Thanks to the blade on their scepter, the Satyres can use devastating circular attacks.

Cerberus:
The Cerberus is coming back in GoW III, but this time he will be much harder to overcome. To do that Kratos will have to kill his three heads , while staying away fom the inflamed puppies he spits and which explode when close to the hero. Hot!

Page 4:
Hades

Hades is one of the bosses of GoW III. The fight against him will be an epic one. Not only is Hades moving very fast to try to spill yout guts with his giant hooks but he is also throwing damned souls at you. Even worse, he will try to suck your soul. To prevent him from doing so you will have to rappidly press L1 and R1. And when you will damage him by tearing some of his organs apart, they will try to get back to him, meandering on the floor ( ). You will need to be patient to figure out the good strategy.

Centaur:
Centaurs are like the generals on a battlefield. They give indications to the foot soldiers. Those soldiers then use better strategies, for example by circling Kratos. You will have to defeat the Centaur to disorganize the enemy troops.

Minotaur:
The Minotaur is one of the most famous enemies of the GoW franchise. He will obviously be back in this new installment, tougher and more powerful. You will need to avoid his devastating blows. It seems that Kratos will encounter different types of minotaurs, more and more powerful.
