Well now that Toho are finally releasing these on Blu, maybe Criterion will be able to release their versions soon after. Hopefully we will see Seven Samurai, Sanjuro, and Bad Sleep Well sometime in early 2010.

The fact that these are coming without English subtitles is actually very good news for North American Kurosawa fans.

May I ask why you're saying that?! I really don't think that many people speak japanese fluently.....

It probably means we will be seeing US/UK versions sooner than we thought.

Case in point: Kagemusha arrives from Criterion in August.

Why doesn't Criterion come out with a collection like this? That's a nice set. The Criterion Seven Samurai re-release still remains the greatest DVD I own. I hope Criterion will release as many Kurosawa Bluray's as they can as soon as possible. Kurosawa's my absolute favorite.

I hope English subbed versions will follow soon. We NEED some Kurosawa on Blu, big time! And I'm definitely picking up Kagemusha tomorrow.

I don't think it really indicates anything because most Japanese DVDs/BDs don't have english subtitles. But let's hope you're right.

what's the status of Rashomon - I know that the Senator Theatre in Baltimore recently presented a 4K restored 35mm print.

Good news, I suppose. But still useless to me without subtitles. Hopefully this means other territories will be getting some of these titles soon...

Great news for those who speak Japanese. But alas, I do not, so I must unfortunately wait a little longer for more of his works to come with English-friendly subtitles.
