There are 3 already out.

Original Romero B/W version. (personally the best)
Savini remake (colour version, not to bad)
Recentish 3D version (absolutely rubbish. avoid at all cost)
New one is prequel and done in CGI like Beowulf.

I think maynard meant the new Blu-Ray release and the differences between it and the older release.

maynard, so far not much is known. The new release is supposed to feature a new transfer, and no extra features besides a trailer. As for the quality of this release, you'll have to wait a little longer for reviews.

There was also the 30th anniversary edition. Which had 15 minutes of brand new footage (filmed in '98 brand new) inserted into the original and with a mostly new soundtrack. The new footage absolutely sucked. Romero had not directed these scenes. The acting, especially from the new priest character, was horrendous.

Just wanted to chime in and Network DVD have updated their site with info about their version of the '68 Night of.... on 26th October. No solid details but according to the item page on the Network site, it's in it's original B/W using an 35mm print. No extras but the disc is listed on their site as region ABC.

Any confirmation that this is indeed region free? Sometimes "ABC" is used as a placeholder and never updated. It has led to a number of unfortunate purchases for some forum members.

I'd forgotten all about that version. Even though I once watched it on dvd. Must be selective memory...

I have that on dvd and it is awful. The idea of inserting modern footage was pitiful.

Sorry, the only place I got that from is the actual distributors website. But since Night of.. is in the public domain and there are no extras other a trailer I don't suppose there'd be much point in locking it up. The same distributor released The Prisoner on blu ray and region locked it and stated so from the get-go so maybe there's hope.

I'm keeping an eye on this one, I'll either pick this up in HMV along with the UK Blu of Texas Chainsaw or I'll order from AMZUK and let you all know that way.

Let me know what you find out, thanks. It's lame that the previous UK blu-ray of Night of the Living Dead from Optimum is region locked.

OK I decided to order this from Amazon UK and I combined it with my order for the UK version of Gremlins. Should have it before the last week in October.

I'll get Texas Chainsaw another time.

Also Optimum are now owned by StudioCanal and have seriously scaled back their blu ray released, plus Canal have dumped several craptacular releases on Optimum (The Fog, Escape From New York) mostly from the old AvcoEmbassy and DEG libraries. I own the Blu ray of Escape and was happy enough with it till I discovered German crowd UFA had the same transfer but both commentaries from the original MGM special edition. The transfers for both are so-so but I'm willing to bet that it was a source issue and not a digitizing issue.

Thanks for that, Funktion. I've canceled my order on Amazon for the Network blu ray and ordered the Optimum version instead. I can deal with cropping but not a crappy transfer. Ironic that I bi*ched about Optimum having terrible transfer issues with their StudioCanal catalogue and here they're the good guys!

Well not so good yeah...but atleast the Network NOTLD BD is OAR while the Optimum NOTLD BD is not OAR. I myself am waiting for a colored version from someone(US?) because I think this particular movie would be better for me with color (and I don't want to rent the colored DVD).

This is just crazy talk. What makes the original movie so great is the style of the movie, and the B/W images are beautiful!

To put color on a B/W movie is even worse than making a re-make of it...

Crap. I own that Optimum BD already. Didn't realise the cropping was so damn serious...
