I don't think so and I doubt they will just because it hasn't been that long since the first was released. If they only fix the PQ problem and leave everything else the same from the first blu then this will be a great blu!

Call me cynical, but I caught that tidbit about "may be a 10th anniversary edition"...which means it's a "whole new release" (and sku) and not a running change to the Sapphire Series release. That means no exchange program...

The film was originally mixed for 5.1 EX/ES for theatres. That's why it's in 5.1 for the Blu-ray release. Simply enable ES/EX for the disc and you'll get the same theatrical experience (but with better quality).

That's how I took it. But who knows for sure if they're actually going to call it the 10th Anniversary Edition.

yet for some bizarre reason, my receiver is reading/decoding Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES DVD's but isn't decoding the 6.1 Bluray discs?? how extremely frustrating. - any thought's why this is occurring... sorry I'm derailing the thread topic here.

Some films just aren't flagged properly. Plus the original DVD had a special altered discrete DTS ES 6.1 mix.

Technically all they would need to do is flag it for the receiver to detect the back channel as matrixed, but there really isn't much of a point. If you enable the back channel, it'd sound exactly the same as if it was flagged for it.

remember the DVD days? the same type of things have happened as well. DVD used to come letterboxed non anamorphic... then newer anamorphic transfers were made, newer/cleaner transfers =). were there exchanges for those? .

like Braveheart 1st release vs. collector's double disc?

Default Gladiator Exchange Program

[QUOTE=JediFonger;2884852]remember the DVD days? the same type of things have happened as well. DVD used to come letterboxed non anamorphic... then newer anamorphic transfers were made, newer/cleaner transfers =). were there exchanges for those? .

I don't think your analogy is a good comparison here. A release of a non anamorphic version followed by a letter box anamorphic version of the same film is very different to the "Gladiator" issue. Even prior to the release of the Gladiator Blu-ray, reviewers pointed out flaws in the quality of the video transfer, noting this was to be a high quality "Safire" release. With the announcement of a new release claiming a new transfer, the "studio" is achnowledging that the first Blu ray release was defective.

I will be very disappointed if the studio doesn't provide purchasers of the defective Gladiator discs a free upgrade.

I think they're acknowledging the transfer was below standard, but the disc itself is just fine. Many here say the transfer is just fine too, just go back a few pages. As such, they are hardly *obligated* to replace it.

That was money well unspent

So if I didn't like how Gladiator had come out, I should find myself another hobby...

Thankfully it didn't have to come to that!

If Universal can make a replacement program for the PACKAGING of Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series, then Paramount should replace at least the disc of Gladiator, seeing as it would be much less costly. Otherwise it just shows that they don't care about us consumers and henceforth will be losing a lot of my business.

This is what I don't get: I saw the reviews - and I didn't purchase it because of them. Why people should expect a replacement after having bought a product when information was readily available surprises me.

If a disc had a manufacturing error resulting in chapter skipping or audio problems, then it's defective and should be replaced but if it's because of an average transfer, well that's just a case of buyer beware. Sites like this are the resources for us as consumers to make those decisions wisely. People running out and buying this either a) without this information or b) in spite of having this information. It's not like this title was released and then reviews started cropping up afterwards and caught people by surprise. There were warnings up on many sites weeks in advance.

I guarantee you there are people that will run out and pre-order this release if it is confirmed as real without waiting to see if there is an improvement.

Once again, I'll patiently wait until a number of reviews are in so that I can make an informed decision.

Default still a guessing game

I don't believe forum members who bought the Blu and are now griping should be snubbed in this thread (I am one of them).

We did as much research as we could on this disc up until release date. Thanks to paramount for getting the discs to the reviewers double time...jerkoffs. All signs point to "this is the gladiator you will have for at least 2-3 years." Ok, cool. It sucks and it's gonna suck for a while, note taken. I wanted the movie and I wanted it in 1080p, even if it's crummy for the next 3 years. That's better than nothing right? We've been continually left guessing. Ok, so paramount knows their disc is garbage...so they provide a mail in rebate!!! Shoot, well for 2-3 years, I can settle for the poop in a blu case.

Now, less than a year later. TADAAAAAA!! JK, we're gonna remaster within a year. I really hope you weren't a sucker who bought in early expecting this to take longer. Besides, we sent out that memo from Paramount about knowing we messed up and caring about our customers....didn't you get it?!

- in short, even though the disc may have been purchased by a bluray.com member, doesn't mean he/she didn't do the research and calculate the risk. We didn't expect paramount to but the second %$^* in our *&% so soon.

Yeah, but that Braveheart double dip came seven years later.

In my opinion there should be no replacement program, people knew the transfer was mediocre, I even remember when it was the hot topic here on this very forum.
You get what you pay for.
Sorry if that pisses you of

I'm not expecting a free replacement, but hopefully Paramount will do the right thing. The current Blu-Ray is not unwatchable, but it's terrible looking at it and knowing how much better it could look. I'll be getting the new version, regardless.
