Many HD DVD owners at AVS repeatedly shared that they heard improvements over 1500 kbps lossy when comparing to full TrueHD or PCM lossless on the same HD DVD titles. Then Transformers comes out and it can't fit lossless.

Suddenly we hear of industry "experts" telling us to trust them that 1500 kpbs DD is "transparent".

Don't give Amir the victory on this one guys. Don't be fooled. Accept nothing less that lossless.
This is 100% right. Hiding behind vague phrases like "transparent to the master" doesn't change the fact that something audible is lost using lossy compression.

For those cases where there's no disc space for PCM, as lossless compression comes into wider use hopefully lossy will become a thing of the past.

Not to drift too far OT, but I never truly heard a difference between lossless and lossy, even after watching over 100 Blu-ray movies in the last year. Until two nights ago, when we watched Casanova. During the end credits I switched audio tracks back and forth, and it was VERY obvious that lossless was a much richer, fuller sound. Probably because it was an orchestra playing, but still... it was enough to make me want to go back and watch my movies all over again, and actually pay attention this time!

That said, even the Transformers SD version has an incredible audio track. I can only imagine how good this sounds in lossless.

Dave is 100% correct.
The Blu version should have at a min a real TrueHD track.
Would be easier just to include the PCM but not if they can't give us an even higher bitrate video encode because of it.

I think the original specs for Transformers called for a PCM track. I think this is the real deal. The discs have probably been in storage for some time and are ready to go or the masters are completely done.

I'm still not paying full price for these titles. Transformers on HD-DVD is $19.95 at Amazon. That is what I will pay for it on Blu if it comes out in the next few weeks. Otherwise, $15 max.

This reminds me of an ABX testing discussion I read some time back. One of the posters mentioned that they couldn't accurately differentiate between encodes at higher bit rates UNTIL they approached the tests by dropping thoughts of artifacts whilst listening to the samples - simply asking themselves the question "which did I enjoy most?" afterwards.

The guy found his enjoyment to be a much more reliable indicator and subsequently went on to rip all his music lossless. We ought to have lossless on every Blu-ray.

i agree with Dave totally,i already said Yesterday with the walmart news and Paramount is going to face the truth and begins again releasing in BD.

If Transformers doesnt include at least a lossless sound ,i will reject buying it.

Again we all should remember this if BAY's appreciate the BD more because he knows that this format can be better than the dead format.

let's not forget Paramount made an announcement to use lossless audio on all releases starting and following Blades of Glory. so if the discs have been authored or pressed already, chances are good they already include lossless audio.

this is also the reason i think Tosh bought out Paramount, to make sure they do not get a bunch of releases from Paramount proving their format is lacking. basically any movie from BoG that did not have lossless audio on the DUD would have had it on the Blu. which version do you think dual supporters will buy?

i don't care if they keep the same video transfer, i want lossless audio on transformers. i've heard the DUD version and the LFE was not as strong as i remembered when i watched it in the digital theater.

I am sure that the agreement made between Paramount and Toshiba had a number of out clauses in place should HD DVD fail to prevail. It's over and Paramount/Dreamworks probably want to get back in the business full steam before some very big titles are scheduled to street.
Face/Off was imminent as well when Paramount f*cked us back in August. It was coming on September 11 (or 18th, cannot remember exactly).

i wont get in trouble guys. dont worry about that, i was only joking when i said fired. (to tell the truth i care less about that job every day, wanna be a blu shirt soon) but this is all pretty real and just like many out there, sound is a big issue with me. sure my receiver cant decode it (and my ps3 cant either) but i will eventually upgrade those components and when i do i want to hear Prime in lossless dammit! not lossy!

Not giving us lossless sound is as bad as if they was to give us a 720p encode instead of 1080p on.
There simply is no excuse to skip on the lossless since there is always space for it.
