Good question. Does anyone know the answer?

I believe the DVD version is 4 disc. Blu ray version is 3 disc.

Per the official site, the DVD UCE is actually 5 discs--2 discs for movie + commentary (BD Disc 1), 3 discs for extras (BD Disc 2). The latter seems odd until you consider (a) it has most (if not all) the extras from the 2004 4-disc DVD and (b) many of those extras are probably still in SD on the BD release. It also has the CD sampler, but not MGM:WTLR (exclusive to the BD package even though it's a DVD).

The source of confusion is likely the 2-disc DVD edition also being released with the two UCEs; it has the same cover art as the Target BD. The movie itself takes up two DVDs, but only one BD (which surprised me considering GWTW's length). Some website designer probably didn't know that, and the Target BD package doesn't explicitly state the number of discs, so he/she may have assumed the BD was also two discs.

(Edit: However, the back of the package lists the commentary as the ONLY special feature, which strongly implies it's BD Disc 1 only--though we won't know for certain if WB sneaked in BD Disc 2, one of the DVD extra discs, MGM:WTLR, or the CD sampler till someone opens it. I couldn't read much of the front sticker, but we know from Walmart's WoO that it might not be accurate.)

According to Target's in-store price-adjustment policy, you should be able to get the difference back from CS on Black Friday--or Saturday, since Target's entire BF ad is supposed to be good thru then--since Black Friday is "the week following" initial release. (Some stores won't PM Black Friday prices; though Target's policy doesn't explicitly mention that, it's certainly YMMV.)

If that doesn't work, keep your original receipt; then buy it again on BF and return that one unopened with the first receipt. (A bit sneaky for me, but it should work; others here have done it before. That's why stores have after-the-fact PM policies.)

Both will only work if both purchases are the same exact item (i.e., the Target BD). If you bought the UCE (from Target or elsewhere) and now want the Target BD, you'll have to return the UCE unopened to the original store; there's no reason to wait till Black Friday to do that return.

Thanks for the help. Now just have to wait to see if the target bd will be 1 or 2 discs.

Thumbs up

Just got an email from amazon that my copy of GWTW shipped. Yay! I think this is the longest I have ever had something on pre-order with them.

I have never seen the movie, so I am really looking forward to this.

For whatever it's worth, I figured I'd just call Target and ask them to go to the back. I was very clear that I wasn't looking for the DVD and I wasn't looking for the big box. I was looking for the Blu-ray that said Target Exclusive. They went back and told me it was a two disc version.

Now does that make it true? No. Just some info for y'all.

That, of course, is on top of the photographic evidence that strongly suggests the Target version is only one disc. (It doesn't prove it 100% since they didn't open the package & part of the front label is unreadable; but the back label is almost conclusive, especially in light of Walmart's WoO.) But whether it's one disc or two, $34.99 is clearly too much to pay when (a) you can get the UCE for just a little bit more and (b) we already know it'll be $12.99 on Black Friday.
The front label says: "FIRST TIME EVER ON BLU-RAY! The epic masterpiece entirely remastered from original technicolor film elements."

As I suspected. So there probably isn't a hidden disc, though we won't know till someone opens the package. Funny how so many people are trying to make it 2-disc when AVS found this October news article stating the Target exclusive is 1 disc only, in addition to the stockroom photos posted here.

BTW, Walmart.com shipped my UCE over the weekend. They used FedEx Home Delivery, but since it's only coming from Fort Worth they'll try to deliver it tomorrow. (Since FedEx Home Delivery is so messed up about when they come to my address, I might not actually GET it tomorrow, but I can always dream.)

you're right in that we won't know until someone opens the package. what isn't funny is the 1 disc/2 disc issue. Obviously there are sources that say it's only 1 disc. The reason many aren't sure is the website. Mistakes are made on websites all the time, but the website (there's a screenshot somewhere on these forums) does say 2 disc for $34.99. You can't just ignore that. The fact remains, no one knows for sure until they open it up.

You could always buy it, then go to the store on Black Friday, buy a second one and return it using the receipt from the first one if they won't price match it.

I refuse to buy the box, so I'm going to buy the $34.99 Target version and if they won't price match it later, I'm still fine with it. Great movie, great restoration, and I won't watch the extras. So this works for me. Here's hoping it's a 2-disc though!

My UCE Box shipped today and while I'm excited to experience this movie on Blu Ray, I'm upset that Warner Bros. seemed to do more the Wizard of Oz set then the GWTW set. Also Wizard of Oz got a digital copy with theres. Guess I should be happy with what I have.

I don't think it's fair to call the UCE "fluff." I was just looking again at the contents that will be in it, and it's all really good. You're not going to find a luggage name tag like in Casablanca or such. The GWTW looks to be really good items.

First, you have a 52-page hardcover photobook. If you hate digibooks, then you would probably dislike that, but I think it will be quite good. The Oz book was excellent!

There is a reproduction of the 1939 program and correspondence from producer David O. Selznick, so it gives it interesting historical perspective.

There is a CD with 8 tracks from the score. Max Steiner's GWTW theme is one of the world's most famous, so I can't see anything wrong with having that and the other selections.

There are 10 5x7 watercolor art prints, giving us a look at how the art directors conceived the film originally.

There's the 6-hour documentary of "MGM: When the Lion Roars" on the extra 2-sided DVD.

There's the great documentary, "1939: Hollywood's Greatest Year"...and lots of the features carried over from the 2005 DVD release.

I don't see any fluff.

+1. And let's not forget the poster offer either; it'll go well with my poster from the Casablanca UCE. (I bought that one with my PS3.) I don't care for luggage tags or passport holders--or watches either (as with the WoO UCE); but this box o'swag at least makes some sense.

Q: Does anyone know yet if the 1939 program reproduction is bigger than the one that came with the 2004 4-disc DVD? It looked like it was in the pictures I've seen, but I'm not sure.

Default Outstanding Reviews for GWTW Blu Ray UCE

I have read several reviews on GWTW blu ray UCE and they review the movie as being excellent VQ and AQ. Just do a Google search and you will easily find them. I don't understand why Blu Ray.com doesn't have a review yet??? Maybe they don't have 4 hours to kill!!! Anyway I purchased the UCE from Amazon late yesterday and am receiving it today! Usually I don't go for the UCE's in fact I don't own any except for Neil Young's awesome Archives Vol. 1 and that takes up way too much space! I will post my review of GWTW UCE tonight. I know $45 is alot to put down for a movie but if I had to buy the other version for $35 plus almost 10% sales tax - it's a no brainer to opt for the UCE.
