I guess my question is do you have to have seen the old "cartoon" series first to understand the story of the "CGI'd" series? What's the timeline and how does The Clone Wars Movie fit in?

Thanks.
Not exactly a continuation, though both series cover the same period between episodes II and III...

Season 2 from Tarvokosky's version happens right before the beginning of episode III, while some episodes from the new series are before those events...

Are you talking about the HD networks for each channel, respectively?

Hopefully the season set is the first time in America we can see the series in its original aspect ratio. Star Wars The Clone Wars is the first animated series done in cinemascope 2.35 aspect ratio. The movie on Blu-Ray was in its proper aspect ratio but both Cartoon Network and TNT have cropped all there broadcasts to 1.78. The single disc DVD releases will also be cropped to 1.78. The Canadian channel Sky HD is apparently the only place to see its original aspect ratio.
The series overview that's a bonus feature on The Clone Wars movie BD shows clips in the 2.35:1 ratio, so it's likely the season 1 BD set will, too.

I will second that.

I have to say that it is fantastic that they are releasing the season on blu...I love the show. My favorite episodes so far have been where yoda is alone on toydaria with 3 clones, fights a droid army, and schools Ventriss, as well as the one where master Luminara and Asokha fight Ventriss; really great Star Wars stuff right there.

As a side note the clone wars movie already released on blu has far superior PQ that the tv episodes...the full season release on blu so show us a significant improvement.

No. I never saw the 2-D show, and I understand the CG one just find. Might want to catch Episodes 1 and 2 (the movies) to see how it begins. Excellent show.

May not be the right place to ask this, but what is the status of the live action series?

I love this show/series. I can't wait to get it in 1080p and I do hope they give us lossless audio too; DTHD or DTS-MA-HD either will be fine! it is quite the release to watch this on Friday's. I also catch Batman: the brave and the bold and I also like the Secret Saturdays and Ben 10 Alien Force! CN has gotten quite the Friday night line-up!

Funny you should mention that. This was posted at worstpreviews.com today:

During the press junket for "Knowing," actress Rose Byrne let slip that George Lucas is currently casting for his upcoming live-action "Star Wars" TV series. "A lot of my friends have been auditioning for it," she told MTV News.

According to Lucas, the show will focus on minor characters from the saga and be set in the time period between "Revenge of the Sith" (Episode III) and the original "Star Wars" (Episode IV). The action will follow the Rebel Alliance as it slowly gains strength against the Empire. There will be Stormtroopers, but no Jedi or Darth Vader will appear on screen.

As he did with the "Clone Wars" series, Lucas will write and shoot an entire year's worth of episodes before looking for a cable channel on which to air the series.

Saw a demo of the discs today. There's going to be a ton of bonus features on them and it also looks like they're in their OAR of 2.35:1!

If they release it, we will buy.

Yeah, I love this show on Cartoon Network in HD. I do hope they give it the full lossless soundtrack and 1080p too!

They wouldn't give me a final release date. I saw the packaging which is not final at all. It's a book-type release with a large book in the center of all concept drawings for the characters and other parts of the series.

There are going to be directors cuts, commentaries, 2D and 3D initial renderings and more.
