I don't know if it wass too complex for the general public, although that might be part of it. It was also marketed as a superhero action movie, which it really isn't. I watched it a few nights ago and thought that it just didn't really flow well as a movie. I'm not sure if it was the editing, or the direction, or the fact that they adhered so strictly to the graphic novel, but I just couldn't quite get into the story. I thought it was interesting, but not involving. I read the graphic novel last year and I think it worked much better in its original format. That being said, if I read reviews of the extended cut that say it flows better I might be tempted to buy it.

That is what I plan on doing also on this release. I would bet good money that a Paramount version would be far superior to whatever Warner does with this movie, so I am waiting to see if Paramount handles their own encode.

No, the R rating killed the box office.

Two things:

A) Is the director's cut for sure coming out in July?

B) Why is everyone thinking this movie hasn't done well financially? It's made nearly $200 million worldwide at the box office. And just think how much it will make from Blu-ray/DVD sales/rentals.

To me it sounds like WB is pulling the same crap that they pulled with 300. Pushed out a great blu, then several months the come out with an 'ultimate' edition with more bonus features and a digital copy and so on.

I'll be like the several of you, rent the DC and then just pony up for the double Watchmen with cheese in dec.

No word on Watchmen coming with a digtial copy??

It's because of the absurd production cost. Yes, it made a boatload of money, but it needed to make tons more on top of that just to break even. As it is, I'd say it'll only prove profitable once it hits home video. It all depends on other costs like advertisements and their dumb ass deal they had to make with Fox.

As for Paramount/WB, I say give WB a chance before shooting for the import. WB proved it is capable of providing a faithful transfer with TDK, even if they limit this capacity for only high profile releases. Don't just automatically assume WB's release will be garbage. At least wait for negative reviews before aiming for an import Paramount release.

they wouldn't need to make a "dumb ass" deal if they didn't have dumb asses working for them that didn't think to check to make sure no one had the rights and they themselves had all the rights.

I saw some compairisons from movies by warner here in the UK and Paramount and disney in the US and when I saw some screen shots compairing the same movies, the Paramount and Disney editions were far better in terms of PQ.

Paramount UK have always done their own encodes so I am looking foward to a nice AVC encode. Bonus is we are more likely to recive 24bit audio from Paramount unlike Warner.

Eh... I doubt it's going to be possible to make any kind of profit. They don't get ANY of the overseas profit(look it up), and they only get about 25-30 % of the U.S. gross(box office gets about 55% of total... plus the WB stuff). So, I'd say with the production costs PLUS marketing.. there's no way in hell it'll make profit.... DVD/BD sales would have to be HUGE.. and I mean HUGE.. like 200m

It was pretty good, but thought it was way too overhyped.
This is coming from someone who just read the graphic novel for the first time about 2 weeks prior to seeing the movie.
I will be getting this one as well, but I'm thinking I migh wait for the Director's Super Special Collector's Edition that comes out later in the year.
It really depends on the features they announce for this one.

I couldn't agree with you more. Although I think that it hasn't done as well as other films in terms of box office, I think it will do amazingly well in terms of rentals and blu-ray/DVD sales like a few other films have done in the past. Example: The Punisher (Thomas Jane's version).

Default Watchmen - 7/25/09

I can officially say that Watchmen the official movie is going to be released on Saturday July 25th. I was looking at upcoming release dates and Watchmen happened to be in our system. I took a pic of the computer screen. take a look.

Haha that's probably when you receive it, I'm thinking. Because other places have been saying that following Tuesday. If you're at a Blockbuster, maybe it will be released that day.. my local one tends to treat them tentatively

Box office and home video aren't the only way they're making money on this film. You mentioned the overseas market. You think Paramount secured the international distribution rights without paying for them? What about merchandising rights being sold? How about all the extra copies of the graphic novel that DC (who is owned by Time Warner) has been able to push? And how about the related video releases, the video graphic novel, the Tales of the Black Freighter feature, and the planned double dip of the film itself? And that's not to mention the surely lucrative deals in place for the film when its time comes to be aired on television.

I agree that they're probably gonna be relying on home video sales to make it worth their while, but they're not doing as badly for it as people think. Probably bad enough that if a sequel were a possibility that it might get canned, but not so badly that the company isn't making money because of it.

Watchmen was a complete mess. An admirable, interesting mess, but a mess nonetheless.

I'll pass.
