Anyone in the US won't see the UK version till middle of next week. But all reviews have said it is region A+B.

Pisses all over it.
I had a look at both this morning, and while the BD is far from mind-blowing, the Criterion DVD is awful.

I can confirm firsthand this is region A + B (dunno about C). It even has the A+B mark on the disc.

I watched this the other day. Its quite slow in places and has this rather weird character prancing around. All I can say is, what a waste of life.

Is this how all this directors movies are? This is the first i've seen of him. How does "ran" rank in his catalog of movies?

This film is usually considered Akira Kurosawa's late masterpiece. It is different in pace to many of his earlier films, such as Seven Samurai which, although it runs 3+ hours, seems to fly right by. If you are looking to give Kurosawa another shot, I would definitely say you should check that one out, or possibly Yojimbo ar Sanjuro. Thanks

I made a comment above about the Belle de Jour BD I wanted to correct, and I will try and find its dedicated thread to post this too.

EDIT: Belle de Jour plays like a dream and is an absolutely divine blu ray; I have a Samsung Plasma, and I didn't have the "cinema smooth" setting enabled under "film mode," so it wasn't actually displaying 24fps at 24fps! Maddening!

How does this disc compare to the previous Optimum dvd release? I've read that the bd is actually an upscale (unconfirmed), so would anyone recommend the Optimum dvd as a cheaper alternative?

Hi everyone, does Ran suffers from a pal speed up issue with the DTS-HD MA 5.1 track like The Deer Hunter does ?

The major issue with Ran is that it has a very problematic transfer. It is the only Studio Canal/Optimum release - thus far - that can not be recommended.

Really ? I've read good things on dvdactive about the overall video quality (but once again, like I've said on The Deer Hunter's subject, I did read great stuff about it and his *great* DTS-HD track...).

Considering that I'ven't got it on DVD, you think I should drop and wait for another release ?

RAN blu-ray releases are upscaled from a SD master. Any reviewer who thinks it's halfway acceptable is a moron.

Well, you know the motto "Trust no one"
I might grab it anyway, the price isn't too much expensive compared to the DVD and I can't wait to see the full movie (only saw a few parts 10 years ago).

Your source on this? It still looks much better than the much poorer Japanese release.

What is your basis for this assertion?

My eyes. The grain structure exactly matches that of a SD master and could never be mistaken for HD transfer, even a extremely poor one.
