Default disney not shipping DVD screeners for PINOCCHIO - Blu-ray Only

Angry anti-blu blogger wrote the following -- I imagine UltimateDisney.com (what with their anti-blu bias and lack of Blu-Ray reviews) is going to have a bit of a fit over this. Check it out -- Disney is not shipping DVD screeners for the Pinocchio Platinum Edition DVD set...they're only sending the Blu-Ray version.

Disney Eliminates Standard DVD Review Copies for Pinocchio

Posted by Johanna on February 27, 2009 at 6:38 pm Category: Movies/TV

Here’s another piece of evidence for studios trying to shove the Blu-Ray format down the customer’s throat: I just got notified that, when it comes to review copies of the upcoming Disney release Pinocchio 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition, the company will ONLY provide the Blu-Ray version.

Now, Disney is shipping a standard DVD copy of the movie with all of their Blu-Rays these days. As their press materials put it, this “allow[s] viewers the opportunity to enjoy Pinocchio on a standard def DVD while they are preparing to upgrade to a 1080p Hi-Def Blu-Ray experience in the near to present future” Me, I’m not assuming I’m definitely going to go Blu-Ray. After all, I never went DAT.

But now I can’t review the DVD package, which has a second disc of special features, including a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, an alternate ending, art galleries, and deleted songs. Since the Disney movies are already familiar classics to me, those extras are what I enjoy most. But the studios want people reading and talking about how cool the newest format is, so that’s all they’re going to make available. It looks to me like an attempt to bias coverage and yet another example of how studios think they know better than consumers what the customers want.

Now, perhaps when it comes to DVD reviewing, all the dedicated journalists have already gone high-tech. And I know it’s tacky to complain too much about free items. But many of you readers haven’t switched to Blu-Ray and aren’t particularly interested in doing so, and I’d like to still talk about good DVDs with you.

Adding to my concern, right now Best Buy shows the two versions at the same price. Once the price difference goes away, I may not have the choice for much longer to keep buying my preferred format.

Well maybe that a-hole will just have to buy a copy like the rest of us.

It's really hard for me to feel sorry for him

She needs to quit crying and switch to Blu-ray, especially as a reviewer. Not sure why dvd is her preferred format either which she alludes to on the last sentence of the article. She should want best pq and aq possible. I just don't get these people.

its to stop piracy, same reason the Academy is going to it as well

furthermore why not provide your best material for review purposes? Good Thinking

Thanks for bringing a smile to my face. The chick's cry baby pee pants rant was wonderful.

And yeah, I assume Ultimate Disney will cry and whine and throw a wobbler as well.

Exactly, these reviewers get a DVD copy and pretty quickly they find their way unto the net somehow, ready for download.

Spot on. Spot on.

Johanna: "But now I can't review the extras. How dare Disney!!"

I'm waiting for her claim that because she paid to see Pinocchio or bought Pinocchio merchandise at some point, it entitles her to get what she wants no matter what. Gotta love the "I'm Entitled" fanboys.

People are more likely to pirate a movie before it is available to the masses. Blu-ray has better protection on it so it would make sense the studiios would prefer to send that out as preferred to DVD which is more easily pirated.

This lady has quite the soapbox. I like how she's assuming she won't go to Blu: "Me, I’m not assuming I’m definitely going to go Blu-Ray. After all, I never went DAT." Anyone who still hold onto 4:3 monitors fed with SD source material is sorely behind the times. They (meaning people like the author of this article) should be kissing the ground the producers walk upon for re-releasing these timeless classics in Blu, not chastising them for not putting it out on DVD.

EDIT: I had to stick it to the crybabies a little bit.

Reviewers get their movies for free, so they shouldn't complain about the format that it comes in. Other posters have brought up the two most important reasons why this is the way to go: ant-piracy and best possible AQ/PQ. Was she also complaining when Disney and other studios stopped providing VHS tapes for review? Really?

Some times I just wonder if there would be such a big complaint about blu-ray if it came on another medium like a flash drive or something rather than a disc. People are so hung up on DVD being "good enough" for the masses, I don't remember this argument back when DVD was introduced...

I wouldn't call it crying yet, as it's simply regurgitating the same info that's been posted here. No "official" word yet from UltimateDisney.com on their thoughts on the matter. But just wait, I'm sure they won't disapoint.

Aww, poor baby. Somebody hand her a tissue.

I don't see what this person really has to complain about. Apparently she gets free movies all of the time for review, and then presumably she gets to keep them afterwards for her own collection.

With all of that money that she's saving by not having to spend money to buy movies like the rest of us, she should be able to go out and at least buy a new player to watch them on.

Granted, if she's hooking that player up to an older SD TV, she isn't going to get the full quality, but at least she an watch the content on the disc.

If you don't have the latest technology why would you be a reviewer?

You can only perform half your job.
