Some ten years ago, I published a review of Tomorrow Never Dies entitled Bond Is Dead. At the time, it really felt like that -- it was only Brosnan's second Bond picture, after a long hiatus following Dalton's so-so turn, and over a decade of Moore's increasingly ridiculous shenanigans. Every new actor would start out making a more serious, more grown-up Bond, but within a film or two it would all degenerate into the same camp that maybe worked in the sixties, but was hopelessly outdated in the late nineties.

I deeply felt that if the franchise was to continue, it had to be rebooted mercilessly, as if none of the preceding films had ever happened. And I secretly hoped that this time around, the films would have an actual timeline and continuity and emotional core that goes beyond foiling the bad guy and bedding the belle du jour. We'd had decades of that, and it's always easier to go back to the original movies that worked in their time than to try and recapture lightning in a bottle using the same old, same old formula.

Casino Royale did the reboot, exactly as I prayed. And now, apparently, Quantum of Solace will do the rest -- create a firm continuity while adding to the emotional core of the actor. And Craig is the man to pull it off: he started out as a trained pitbull of an agent, completely emotionless -- and the only Bond ever that truly felt like a professional killer; so, to see him fall in love in CR, and then lose this huge love, was truly moving. And I never knew a Bond movie could be moving.

All this while still being the toughest and coolest bastard around.

Forster is a great director, and this is going to be a total winner, I feel it in my guts. For all those nostalgic of older Bonds (hey, myself included) I'm sure the Ultimate Edition masters will start popping up on Blu-ray in conjunction with the film's release. And for the new generation who just can't see beyond the camp in the old titles, the Craig series will be a new benchmark.

BTW, the rights to Bond are reverting to MGM from Sony with Bond 23; and Craig has signed up for a total of five films now. It's going to be a vintage run.
Great post..thanks for summing up my feelings *exactly*.. my wife loved this movie and is now actually looking forward to a Bond movie. That's gotta mean something.

Will this Bond movie be released by Sony Pictures on DVD/BD as Casino Royale? Or is this one on MGM?

This one will be Sony's again.

And they'll probably rerelease CR as a special edition tie-in, with a commentary, deleted scenes and whatnot. Hey, as a proud owner of the Australian uncut CR, which did cost a pretty penny, I'm not complaining.

MGM will, apparently, handle the later movies, which means Fox will handle those Blu-rays. If nothing changes.

But we are talking 2010 and beyond here.

If this is anywhere near as good as CR, I'll definitely like it.

I'm all for more people joining the board and engaging in discussions, but this isn't a videogame system "smackdown" board, where berating people who disagree with you or using derogatory or insulting language is accepted.

Anyway, just my $.02

Anyway, I'm giving Craig and the filmmakers this next film to convince me that this new direction for Bond is really a good thing. I think the old-style Bond had gone on for so long, that its okay to try to reinvent the series (putting aside reservations many have about moving away from Fleming's direction). But, Casino Royale, while having some great scenes (especially the opening chase) didn't convince me they had it right. We'll see if the next one does.

Never said one derogatory remark about anyone on this board....It was more
like the other way around from people who have posted WAY more than me....

Anyway, if anyone was offended that was not my intent....

Wow, just noticed this thread... sounds like this one will be great.

VERY interesting title, I hope it's a working title, sounds like a mouthful... say that one ten times fast: Quantum of Solace.

For some reason, "Quantum of Solace" sounds just as high-tech and immersive as "Blu-ray".

What's the difference between the Australian version of CR and others?

My disappointment faded when I saw Casino Royale, but I hope that this time the movies will get better with Craig.
I totally agree with your sentiment.

I was blown away by the opening scenes from Goldeneye, and thought the series was in good hands - but it got worse over time.

I can't say I have a definitive favourite Bond film. There are pieces in all of them which I like, although Connery's movies are probably my favourite overall. Live and Let Die is probably my favourite Moore film.

i like the fact the gadgets and q are remarked as to why this is supposed to be a male fantasy ...... as was mentioned that stuff worked great in the 60's when people thought hiding under a desk would protect from a nuke! the past few were not bad but not good and the only reason we owned them at all was for my moms and aunts just loved brosnan lol seemed they were getting too much chick flick in them. the new one was a much more beleivable bond and i would love the gadgets/cars making an appearance but keep it reasonable and somewhat real, bond = superagent make me beleive that he actually is. girls, cars and kicking butt, thats what i wanna see and i can't wait for the next one.

reality check

PS girls, cars and kicking but are involved in espionage, but not like I've seen in a Bond film. A good script with a realistic modern plot would be very interesting, but perhaps it is outside the Bond realm.

Man some of you guys need to either relax or form a country club. Damn man let people express themselves. I guess it true what they say you like the first bond that you see. And with Craig you gotta give him and the production crew credit because it seems like 90% of people who been into James Bond since Dr.No are lovin CR and their take on it. there my $.02

The disc released in Australia, Finland and some other countries is actually the only uncut version available anywhere in the world that actually has lossless audio. The US, UK and other versions are gimped to a degree.

Check here and here.

Actually, it was in the 50's, when we ducked and covered, that we somehow believed that desk hiding would save us from nukes. By the 60's, Americans had gotten much more cynical.
