I'm assuming that all of the PS3 units affected use 90nm parts from the original PS3 launch. Right now, only the Korean 80 GB units use 65nm parts.

Also, the fan noise brought about by the 1.81 version update seems to affect only the 90nm PS3s. Other than that, no other problems so far (the Korean owners of PS3s say their 65nm units are damn quiet even with version 1.82 firmware)

Default PS3 Locked up

Has anyone had any problems with there PS3. Last night i was watching a DVDR disc
Then put Virtua tennis on. Went to shut down with ps controller and the whole thing locked up. Had to manually shut down at the back and turn back on. Controller wouldnt pick up all lights flashin. Switched off again and it now seem all ok.
I have had the PS3 day release in the uk and never had a problem and have all firmware updates

My PS3 is whisper quiet, bought it at walmart just outside of toronto. I lay the unit on it's side, it is in a open area in the tv stand and is well vented. The unit does get hot but when the fan does come on you can hardly hear it.

I noticed mine gets super loud only when played a dvd, probably because it spins faster. but when watching a blu ray it takes about 2 housr for the high speed fan to kick in. I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building and its super hot up here too. My friend has one that is in the open in his basement and it never gets to the highest speed. Depends on where you live and what not.

I just watched 3 hours of alias back to back, not a peep out of the fan. At least not where it was noticeable.

Any possibility that the fan will be quieter on the upcoming 80 GB version?

Default Buy the quiet one?

So is there a way for people to share info, such as box numbers, or other info on the box to be able to tell which parts their PS3 has in order to buy the quieter version?

Default Fan

unless your fan sounds like its trying to make the ps3 fly i would'nt be to worried. Iv'e noticed my fan gets louder when playing blu rays but i always put it down to the disk spinning faster and its not much of a big deal , and as others have said the firmware update means the ps3 can do more stuff but it requires more work hence the fan is louder.

iv'e had my ps3 lock up maybe 2-3 times and over a few months worth of us and after turning it off and letting it chill for a while its always been back to normal.

I even replaced it for a new one, but as soon as I did a system update it happened again. Should I replace it again? Can anyone help?

The fan kicking on into high drive is completely normal. Its better to be safe than sorry and have the PS3 melt itself down.

For me it only does it when watching movies though.

Default PS3 Position?

Do you have it lying flat or on its side? I have heard that It gets better airflow on its side, but I would think the opposite is true.

It's not over heating. I have noticed my PS3 has gotten louder since an update (this update came just before they added upsampling to DVDs and PS1/PS2 games.) When I first got the PS3, I could not tell if it was on or not if it were not for the LED light in front and te picture on screen, that was how quiet it was.

The reason for the noise is fan speed. Basically Sony reduced the threshold of the temperature probe in firmware. Thus when the PS3 heats to a certain level. The fan kicks in and cools things down.

It's not overheating when fan kick into high gear because PS3 will freeze, LED light will blink red, It will also emit beeping noize and turn off if it really did over heat ( A built in saftey mesure that may save your PS3 from crapping out, far better than Xbox 360's 3 red rings of death). If this happens, wait about 2 hours before turning it on again. This can befound in the troubleshooting section of the PS3 manual. I read the entire manual which is why I know this. Read it!

The PS3 is loud now, to cool it down so it does not Overheat.

If you think vertical helps, by all means do it. However Just don't buy those Interplay "coolers", they don't do sh$t, and have been known to cause over voltage which can not only ruin your console, but cause fires!

Default PS3 Nyko fan....

Well, i can't say ive experienced a louder ps3 after downloading the firmware, but I can say stay away from the intercooler. Just yesterday mine started sounding like some mice humping or fighting over cheese (imagine the squealing...quite the racket). Anyways, dont waste the 30 bones like I did. It's fixing to go in the trash....

I'd much rather have the fan going at high speeds than let the thing heat up, so what I did was put my PS3 in another room and ran an HDMI cable from that room to my reciever (I am so lucky I bought a 12 foot cord back in the day) and problem solved! Woohoo for BlueTooth!

I have noticed that if I turn off the upscaling when watching a standard DVD, the fan does not get loud. The problem is, I like using the upscaling feature for the better PQ, but it is too loud during quiet scenes in a movie. Do you think they will do a FW update to fix this or is this the way it is with added features such as upscaling? When I call Sony, they act like they have never heard of this before!

I wonder if its build difference, fan issues or location issues.

I have yet to get mine loud.

It folds upwards of 16 hours a day, Ive watched upscaled dvd for multiple hours and watched BR discs.
