I have the PS3 and the Samsung BD-P1000. The PS3 has much better load times and the PQ, at the very least, equals the Samsung.
I have been very pleased with the PS3. And I am not a gamer but I have been buying some games and playing the free demos. In all, it is quite a versatile machine for the money. |

I have both (see sig).
Here are the advantages of each: PS3
SONY BDP-S1
On the last few points, the PS3 is also nice-looking, but only second best. The PS3 does put out a great picture and I would have been satisfied to have it as my only Blu-ray player if I had never seen the PQ of the Sony standalone.

It's loud only if you cramp it up in a small space. I have my PS3 standing up with plenty room to breathe and I can't hear it at all (quiet scenes included).

It does not at the moment. 1080p/24 should be in the major firmware release around the European launch window.

PS3 also supports Dolby TrueHD
It may also support DTS-HD MA thru firmware update (at this time, no player on the market does). "Better" response time for the PS3 remote commands is putting it mildly. The PS3 is near instantaneous, where players such as the Sony BDPS-1 and the Samsung BDP-1000 lag lag lag. The BDPS-1 is almost unbearable. The PS3 can also reverse frame step for Blu-ray discs. The Samsung cannot (only for DVDs). The PS3 also seems to have less HDMI handshake issues. |

You know, i have a hard time understanding why the PS3 has TrueHD Support and only *1* disc that has a TrueHD Track, where as no BD (or hd-dvd for that matter) have DTS HD-MA Support and a ton of discs have it!!! Looking at the specs, the same hardware that does TrueHD should be able to handle it no problem, and the PS3 is a powerhouse that could do it with its eyes closed. So why the delays so far? I think its due to licensing issues. I cannot think of ANYTHING else. Its not a hardware issue.

I think it's because DTS doesn't have their s*** together. They didn't for the DVD launch, and now they don't for the HD/BD launch.
Why Dolby TrueHD support? Well, the PS3 system is supposed to last a very long time. While there may be only one disc at this time, in the future there will of course be more. Also, certain PS3 games are rumored to support it as well. |

That's odd. Mine is in my living room, a 20X24 room, on top of a table. I wouldn't particularly call that a small room. I don't think it's having any breathing issues. It's just plain loud compared to a piece of equipment designed to be a HT device. I am not bashing the noise level, it is just a downside if you are buying this primarily as a BD player. Big horsepower needs big cooling.
