With Eagle Eye, Wall-E, Deathrace, and Wanted all 20%+!

I like that the top 20 now has the BD % - it's interesting to see that 2 of the top 10 (including #1) weren't on BD at all. That's obviously shooting the BD vs DVD ratio in the foot.

We can combine all tables and get a nice chart for BD sales and BD/DVD ratios:

Code:

2. Pineapple Express 90 12
3. Mirrors 51 13
4. Appaloosa 49 12
5. Eagle Eye 48 21
6. Righteous Kill 42 14
7. Iron Man 36 42
8. My Best Friend's Girl 35 8
9. Wall-E 33 21

Are we seeing a major difference in the long tail of the two formats, or is this just the Q5 effect? Iron Man was 42%! Those are amazing numbers for day-and-dates.

Perhaps even MORE significant is Wall-E, a "kids' film" that is at 21% share.

We expect a TDK, Iron Man, Wanted, etc. to do well.

Wow never noticed that Tyler Perry's movie was not even released in Blu-ray. Not too much demand here for the movie either since I did not read a single post on the subject.

12% would make pineapple express the first non-animation comedy to cross the 10% mark. But the real reason for the disparity is the top DVD title did not have a bd release. Not that everyone was clamoring for it, but someone probably felt that it would sell that many on BD...

Mamma Mia at 9% is also unexpected, that movie's demographics is supposed to be old pre-menopausal women, not exactly a HT-enthusiast demographic.

BD has sewn up all the action genres --- they're pretty much all at the 20% mark now. The superhero genre (TDK, IM) and high-testosterone movie (300) are the top performers.

Another sign of strength. The decline in sales of titles like TDK, IM, 300, Transformers is much slower than DVD. TDK at 31, IM at 42, 300 at 46. It looks to me that for the right genres, BD releases have significantly stronger legs than the DVD one, and the older the release, the faster the DVD one is dropping.

Only unfortunate thing : comedies and drama still not consistently above 10%. Yet.

It could very well be that people put off buying these titles on DVD as they were planning on getting a Blu-ray player for christmas or during the after christmas sales - and thus, ended up buying the Blus after the initial release date. Could explain why the BD titles appear to have longer legs.

Another option is that because Blus are more expensive, people aren't always able to buy them on release and end up buying them a bit after.

Either way, it's a good sign though. I'm certainly impressed.

The first chart is compairing how much percent BD sold over other BD's? and the second one is how much BD's sold vs dvd?
yes and no
in the first chart when they say Mirrors was around 50.88% and Appaloosa 49.3% and TDK was 100% (#1 always=100) it means that TDK sold just under twice as many as mirrors and just a bit more then twice as many as Appaloosa.

On the second chart when they say Planet earth (#1) sold 53.57% it means that it sold more titles on BD then on DVD (i.e. more then 1/2 the titles that where sold where sold on BD. So 33% means DVD sold 2x as many and 25% DVD sold 3x as many....

I don't think it is only Christmas, it is a new format every month there are more and more people that take the plunge. That is just normal

I imagine TDK will be the first title new BD owners get for a while.

Out of curiosity I compiled first-week sales percentages for new releases last year (May-August 2008) and it's clear how comedies have improved sales on BD:

Code:

What makes you say this?

The chart itself says "BD/DVD", IE if Planet Earth has a value of 54, that means that 54 BDs were sold for every 100 DVDs.

I read it as a BD selling more than DVD would be a number > 100%.

*EDIT* Oh, I was looking at Grubert's table, you are absolutely correct.

Grubert, can I recommend changing your table header which says "BD/DVD" to something more accurate?

I was using HMM's phrasing, but yeah, it is confusing because they mean BD share of total disc sales.

Meaning - of every 100 Dark Knight sold, 31 were BD and 69 DVD.

Quote:
The fast-paced actioner Max Payne, from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, overcame its modest box office performance to top all three home video charts its first week in stores.

The video game-based film, which earned just $40.7 million in U.S. theaters late last year, debuted at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, Home Media Magazine’s rental chart and Nielsen’s Blu-ray Disc chart.

Max Payne handily beat another new release with a higher box office pedigree, Lionsgate’s horror sequel Saw V, which debuted at No. 2 on the sales and rental charts and No. 4 on the Blu-ray Disc chart.

Saw V grossed $56.7 million at the box office, but consumers bought just 81% as many copies as they did of Max Payne, according to Nielsen.

The previous week’s top seller, Lionsgate’s The Family That Preys, from Tyler Perry, slipped to No. 6 on the sales chart.

Blu-ray’s appeal, particularly among the action crowd, continues to heat up. The high-definition format accounted for 21% of the total buy on Max Payne, but just 11% of the total buy on Saw V.

Meanwhile new Blu-ray Disc households are still snapping up copies of the format’s biggest seller to date, Warner’s The Dark Knight. Last week 30% of total copies sold were in the Blu-ray format, enough to make it the No. 2 seller on the Blu-ray chart — and the No. 4 seller overall.
So the Blu-ray top sellers were:

1. Max Payne (21% share)
2. The Dark Knight (30% share)
3. ???
4. Saw V (11% share)

No surprise about Max Payne (action/video game movie). However, I expected Saw V to track higher (young male demographic and all that).

Great to see TDK BD with another 30% market share. Max Payne did it's part by scoring a big 21% share for the good guys. TDK Blu-ray was the #4 seller overall. I am guessing 15% or more this week.
