Here the updated chart. Added yearly average for 2009. Current 4 week share is below average but rising.

I disagree. Percentage points is the only valid way to show change in percentage share. Example all polls are done in that way (Barack increased his lead with 4 percentage points)

(I wonder if the Amazon pricing goof helped. Maybe we'll see a surge in SB when Amazon gets enough in to ship )

Until you changed the legend you weren't claiming to show the change in percentage. You were claiming it was "Yearly market share increase".

But, I never see anyone make graphs of the change in poll results. They graph the poll results and make comments on the deltas.

Beware the idiot who sees a poll result of 1% then 2% and then 4% and claims the idea isn't catching on.

"It's only gone up 3 percentage points"

In reality, support has quadrupled.

I'm reminded of the HD disc war when people would see BD at 60% and HD DVD at 40% and claim all HD DVD needed to catch up was 10% more support.

I wrote it in the first post with that graph, but agree i also should i had it in the image. (i just thought it was obvious)

Showing the change in percentage points is much better because then you really see how its going. In the other way the chart will just be misleading

example (not real numbers)
year 1: 0.01%
year 2: 0.3 % 2900% increase
year 3: 3% 900% increase
year 4: 9% 200% increase
year 5: 18% 100% increase

It looks like it slowing down a lot, when its really increasing

The key thing, to me, with changes in percentage points, is that it serves as a rough proxy for the number of people buying Blu-rays. A change in market share from 3% to 4% means you've gained approximately the same number of people as 40% to 41%.

The problem with looking at it as a relative change, e.g. considering both 1% to 2% and 30% to 60% to be a doubling, is that doubling a small number is much less significant than doubling a large number. This was brought up in a recent story in the UK about how misleading figures on cancer are unless you know the incidence of the disease in the whole population. Eating a certain type of food might double your risk of a specific type of cancer, say, but this tells you nothing unless you know how prevalent that type of cancer is. If 1 in a million people get that type of cancer, then doubling the risk only causes an extra 1 in a million people to get it. If, on the other hand, 50% of the population get that type of cancer, then doubling the risk would mean that if everyone eats the type of food that doubles the risk, the entire population would be expected to get that form of cancer! Clearly the two situations are completely different in terms of the increased risk to an individual from the identified risk factor.

For Blu-ray, you could argue that the most valid metric would be the % of non-Blu-ray people that have been converted to Blu-ray. E.g. if we go from 1% to 2%, we have converted 1 in 99 people to Blu-ray in that period. If we go from 40% to 41%, we have converted 1 in 60 people to Blu-ray (out of those who weren't already Blu-ray owners), i.e. it is arguably harder to get from 40 to 41 than it is to get from 1 to 2, because you have a smaller pool of people remaining to be converted.

Especially since it was only available at Target and Best Buy. Bolt made it to the list too, even though it wasn't supposed to be on sale until Sunday. Did you notice Bolt did 20%? Blu-ray did pretty well considering the exclusivity of Twilight and 4 of the top 20 were not released on Blu-ray either.

I think its more interesting that last year this week must have been a great BD week. Only 1 percentage point increase in market share compared to last year. What movie was released that week?

"I am Legend" was released on March 18th, 2008. I'm thinking that would correspond to the same week this year, and probably be big numbers.

I Am Legend.

Actually I was expecting revenues to be down this week from last year. I'm happy to say I missed by a little.

Cool :-)
I am legend created the first spike in my chart. (not as large as Iron Man and TDK spike, but still a spike)
