And by the way, the TRUE WINNER for the coming console war will be IBM anyway... They got in every console a license share for their PowerPC architecture

Is it me, or is HD-DVD starting to look like a formidable oponent for Blu-Ray. Nothing much seems to be going on in the Blu-Ray camp, yet in the HD-DVD camp there are already concrete release dates. i.e. hardware in the USA by 4th qtr 2005, with almost 100 films promised between then and 1st qtr 2006. The first BR discs will not arrive til 2006 and then nobody knows when or what. Will people wait for Blu-Ray? especially as it's suggested that BR machines will be more expensive, and far larger than HD-DVD players, (to enable backwards compatibility with dvd).
Sky has announced that it's high-def service is only to be watched via HDCP enabled HDMI, it seems to me likely that we will be prevented from making our own recordings. At best they will be flagged 'watch once' or something. As this is the only selling point for Blu-Ray at the moment it might delay it's UK release til 2007. Then if BR discs are more expensive to manufacture that extra cost may be passed onto the consumer making Blu-ay discs more expensive to buy than HD-DVD. Or margins smaller for retail which would encourage them to stock HD-DVD. Anyway, just a bit of speculation of the top of my head. |

Note that BDs are not projected to cost any more to produce in volume quantities than DVDs - in fact, they may even cost less as they can be nearly 50% paper - saving a lot of plastic. Also, I know that Sony's original BDZ-S77 recorder is bulky and achieves backwards compatibility with DVD by employing a separate optical head for BDs and another for DVDs, but it was released several years ago. Since then both Sony and Phillips have developed three-laser optical heads for blu-ray that can supporting recording and playback of CD, DVD and BD. HD-DVD/AOD also needs a three-laser head for maximum compatibility, but they seem to be focussing upon a two-laser variant. Although these heads will allow reasonably slimline high definition players and recorders for either BD or HD-DVD/AOD, and for slimline computer drives, it will be a little more time before heads and the supporting electronics are available which allow compact high performance portable high definition players. :? Of course, if you're thinking of linking the 1080p HDMI output from such a portable to an 81" plasma remember that the power consumption of a display is roughly proportional to its surface area, ceteris paribus, so where that 81" display consumes almost a kilowatt a well-engineered 42" one gets by on a few hundred watts - or you could go for a more efficient LCD display or even wait a little for OLED and combined LCD/OLED displays. 8)
