Sorry, but anyone who thinks that an expensive HDMI cable is going to give you better picture over a cheaper one, well lets just say the sales person did a good job convincing you...

If you check hdmi.org, it answers a lot of questions. The only real difference in a more expensive cable is either, if it's pure fiber optic for long lengths or what they call 'high speed' which is sometimes used for PC/Mac applications. In a home theater situation... any basic HDMI cable will do all versions, all HDCP etc.
You're dealing with marketing dollars in most cases here. If the cable is copper inside... doesn't matter what color the jacket is or how thick it is. |

I went to best buy to pick up my family x-mas gift a Samsung Blu Ray Player and I asked the guy to show me were the HDMI cables were and he tried to get me to buy a Rocket Fish HDMI cable that was 59.99! I asked if they had a cheaper one and he told me they had one for 32.99 then I asked are you sure you don't have any cheaper ones he said no and if I went cheaper it wouldn't look good on my tv. I said forget it and went on the buy the blu ray player. I went to Wal-Mart across the street found an HDMI cable for 15.00 bucks. BB trys to F*&# you when it comes down to it silly sales man trying to get me to waste 60 damn dollars lol.

Digital means, generally, that for cables if you see the picture without dropouts that the picture will be indistinguishable whether over a short or long cable. Folks who claim that they can see the difference (e.g. "clarity" or resolution or such) over a short run of different cables are "wanting" to see the difference. After signal conditioning in the TV, the bit sequence will be *exactly* the same. The only way that a crappy cable will show itself is with dropouts / errors, which will cause visible artifacts on the picture. |

fiber for hdmi is still expensive. with a cheap hdmi cable only being a couple of dollars. no matter what length of fiber you used you would still have to have a transmitter and receiver and dual fiber lines for each connection. you can get fiber converters that let you run around 300m but they are pretty pricey, so unless you need to run long distances you don't have to buy the fiber system which means you can keep prices low
