Toshiba ceded to the rival Blu-ray format in February 2008 after spending years developing its own HD-DVD next-generation video disc standard.

Trying to make out HD-DVD came first.

HD-DVD was backed by a consortium of companies including Microsoft and Intel, while Sony is the lead developer of Blu-ray.

Trying to make everyone was behind HD-DVD and only Sony was Blu. ******s.

The new DVD player will be backwards-compatible with standard DVD discs, according to the sources.

Would you expect a DVD player to not be compatible with DVDs????

Exactly, Ive been on this site long enough. Ookie needs to get a grip. Im more looking for comments on the HW and if its even possible. I guess you missed my LAME comment, because thats what it is.

At some point, certain people felt that the upscaling Cell chip Toshiba was working on could possibly keep people happy enough with upconversion until HD downloads/VOD was feasible. Do I think so, no, but Id like to hear from someone with a little knowledge in the industry (which excludes you Ookie). Also why I asked about the new 1080p XstreamHD service thats coming(was conveniently ignored) which will be able to stream MasterHD(first VOD service with hd audio).


BTW, Im not concerned enough about Blu-rays longevity to run to anyone. Ill just adapt to the next media(Ill most likely be signing up for XstreamHD if it brings what it has promised)

Unless they use super resolution techniques from analysing whole sequences of frames in real time (which I seriously doubt) they are stuck at SD resolution. And trying to fake more resolution just makes for an equally fake looking picture.
It's one of these video myths that are endlessly posted but remain as false as ever (you can turn SD into (almost) HD if you...). Another is: On-Off contrast is a meaningless number. You don't have to pay attention to it.

Even if it ever does come to fruition, Toshiba will have to breach the same forces it needed to in order for HD DVD to succeed (and more)………….. and we all saw how well that worked out.

Plus, from a marketing standpoint this can be countered easily with two words………

“Fake HD”
by all the Sales Associates at Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. – even without getting into the technical details with the mainstream buying public. People don’t want fake anything (exception being perhaps big mammary glands)………..they will always prefer the real deal, if only to be as future-proof as possible.

I really think Toshiba should concentrate on upgrading their refrigerators. I’m in the market.

The most important matter for DVD is proper deinterlacing - not upscaling. I have a very hard time believing Toshiba will be able to do this better than solutions such as Realta and ABT especially at prices less than Blu-ray players. Just like HD DVD, this is just another Toshiba scam. It's funny how this company's credibility just sinks further and further.

Check the membership of HDD----about 12K and holding.
Check the membership of blu-ray.com. Close to 30K and

what HW there is 0 info in that article. Are they talking SUC again? a new SuperCodec that super compresses everything so that DVDs BW and capacity are enough? a multi layer DVD.... how can he (or anyone) tell you how delusional (or not) this idea is. In the end it is just an other BD hater trying to drum up the "don't buy into BD because something else which is just as good will win the war"

Everyone knows the facts it can never look as good, the only question you could have is would some think it good enough? the answer is yes, some people are blind (literally) and some don't care the least bit. In the end there is nothing to say on that either (that is exactly why HD DVD failed most people that cared were willing to pay for quality and to have the movies they wanted and the ones that did not were not willing to pay extra for something they did not care about, so all that was left were idiots –and they bought HD DVD players and some might be wise enough this time around not to make the same mistake)

They tell me if you google “Pentonman at Blu-ray.com even got a tip of the hat from the NY Tiimes”, our forum be quoted somewhere in the Times back during the days of the format war.

Nothing counts like a brand name (Blu-ray)………..and things will just get better and better with time for this forum.
