In that scene from Ben Hur, his jar is clearly visible and as he holds it about waist high. He jiggles the jar and there is a sound effect of the coin jumping around, then he clearly turns it upside down. I don't know if you are zooming in or otherwise cropping the wide cinemascope like image, but there should be space even to the left of him and below the jar in his hand.
