Coov,

We incourage inspiration and new artists, that does not include those that just take others work and try to change it without permission, even if it is honest. Taking a moment to think before doing so goes a long way...

My problem was not that you used dv8's design to make your own, it was that you did not ask him first.

This is a common courtesy that I figured everyone would understand.

Doesn't this sound like a better way to address it:

Hey dv8pdx,

I saw your cover for ______ on the thread, and it really got me thinking that I could one day create covers as good as yours. Now, I am new at this and don't quite know what I am doing yet, so I was wondering if I could borrow your cover and see what I can do with it to create something of my own. I understand your hard work went into this design, so I am more than willing to give you recognition for helping me out. And I would definitely send you my design before posting it for others, to see what you think.

Let me know if this is okay with you; If not, I understand that too.

Thank you,

Coov
Now doesn't that sound like a way to do it without causing any issues?

The fact that you are back here again saying that we are not appreciating new artists, when you didn't show dv8 respect in the first place with your design, shows that you still don't understand our reasons.

I do fully support new artists, and respect their efforts!

I in no way am contradicting my stance on that matter with my previous words here.

And Gbox85, I do agree that we should put out differences aside, but if there are differences in opinion about how respect should be shown to everyone, than I will be deeply sad.

As a member of many cover sites and two other cover forums, I have never seen as much drama as this thread has created. Yes it is a great place to hang out and chat and post covers, and there are some great new artists taking shape..........

But if this thread can't be friendly, constructive and respectful, then what is it here for?

bpm

Oh, and to get back on topic, Gbox85, why don't you fire off a request to Fergubond, he has already done a couple of Chinese titles and might be interested in doing this one too!

I will say this again... I did not know it was someone else's work. I found this particular art elsewhere. Had I known some fan created it I would not have bothered using it. I am a graphic artist and rely solely on my own efforts and creativity. Branding me as a thief in here is far from a welcoming gesture.

 Couldn't have said it better.

Wise words. Sometimes people here dont realize that there's thousands of people here from diferent backgrounds, culture, etc and that we don't know what a reaction to certain comment or suggestion may be. No matter what we say or do, we must take that carefully into consideration. Some consider somethings offensive, some don't, but It's not up to us to decide whats right and wrong. Thats why being polite and respectful always work. We dont want to scare people away or discourage them. It doesn't matter if we think that what we said isn't offensive. If we come into a thread full of uknown people...POLITE and Respectful is how we should be

As far as the Coov situation

The way we view other peoples art is subjective and always, ALWAYS have to think that thats someone else's creation before we modify or distribute. By what I see Coov made an honest mistake, heck, I'm probably the most flawed person here, so I've been there. But Coov has to understand that a design is like someones baby, so people get angry when they see that their art has been changed. I think they are entitled to. Im not taking sides, just expressing MHO. BPM and DV8 always encourage and help young and upcoming artists. I am a witness to that. If dv8 got angry, he had a right. Coov, just move on and design a new piece, display it and you shall see what I mean. We need to move on from situations like this and stop bringing up old situations, its not good for the thread.

I'm glad you posted that note BPM, I think many folks needed to see that as to sending a pm saying "hey bro I'm grab your cover and I'm gonna make it better". It helps us upcoming GA's to show respect to people that MAINTAIN this thread and work hard to keep giving us cool covers. There's alot of folks that stopped making covers because of this crap. Fellas lets just think twice before we say or do things around here...

Thats my 2 cents...

I bought a few DVD when I was in China last time and I'm finding that I like the white space that they have on some of their packaging, so I decide to try out a new theme that makes use of some more white space than my old covers used to. I'm fairly set on the designs of the front, with just a little more tweeking. The backs of the cases are causing a bit of a problem for me, as I have tried a couple ideas and they don't seem quite right. Here are two very rough samples of possibilities I'm trying out for case backs (incorrect credit info). I'm hoping you guys might be able to help and make some suggestions that might point me in a new direction. I always love reading your guys' input.
P.s. The text inside the lines on the back of My Sassy Girl is the "10 rules" That is the only part that am sure I want to keep on the back.

After some tinkering and downloading Imandix I have come up with a different cover for The Battle of Britain. Opinions, without being rude, are appreciated. Thanks.

I think that the title "The War Collection : The Battle of Britain" should be a little bigger. Not close in size to the actor's names

Looks great though.....

Thanks very much. I'll have to up the font size a little. I guess I should also include the word 'The' on the spine.

HD Goofnut 08-20-2010 02:33 PM

Ok, I fixed the title on the spine and the size of the title font. I think I am going to go with this template for the Blu-ray War Collection.

I'm likin' your Battle of Britain cover  , although I think a blue spine would look better , and big scan bars are not needed on coustom covers IMHO

You don't think the green goes better with a military/war theme?

Camouflage?

Nice looking cover but, I agree the dark green is too distractive.

I don't mind the bar codes, it looks original.

bpmford 08-20-2010 07:20 PM

Hey HD, what if you change the coloring of the back cover them to a muted green and the spine to match.

I also think the text on the front is WAY too small.

I thought about that, but I didn't want to mess up the original artwork too much since that picture came from a pic of an artist's print.

I think I may just change the spine to blue, but I'll play with it and see what I get.

Cool

Beautiful artcover but Dolby Digital? That needs tweaking
