One lesson learned today. Thank you Nissen. :)

Thanks for the offer. I went the easier route. What about now? ;)

I actually liked it better the way it was first... it wasn't unbalanced because the rock on the right offset the ship on the left. And besides, not everything has to be exactly centered.

Hmmm... I'm not quite sure. Somehow there's something missing when you just crop off the big rock. Without it there jusn't isn't enough visual info for the eye to determine the scale. (The rock is what identified the scale of the ship.) The ship now becomes too centered and you break the Rule of Thirds, AKA The Golden Composition. Perhaps if you move it slightly left of centre.

Also, Imrahil is right about the logo now disappearing in the clouds.

I still like the cover and am insanely jealous I didn't think of using that image.:) If you have access to all the menus, I'm hoping you'll do separates for the films.

I felt compelled to make one for The Piano. This is for the Australian release with it's God-awful "Dendy Heart" cover.

I love the film. Saw it in the cinema back in '93 when I was in the army. The film wasn't too big a hit in the barracks, but I was floored.

I found a tourist photo from the beach that was featured in the film, erased the photographer's wife, tweaked the colours to match the photography in the film and added some ethereal figures to the beach. The figures had to be rotoscoped from their backgrounds before being added, something I try to avoid because it's such a pain to get the edges right. Couldn't be helped this time.

The photo wasn't quite sharp enough to support the blow-up, so I had to run a few filters on it and add some noise. Tip: Using the Add Noise filter (sparingly) will give images a perceived sharpness, even though the detail isn't there. I use it from time to time when I only have small or blurry images to choose from.

I wound up with a really clean back this time. I had all the Dolby and DTS logos and stuff on there originally, but found it distracting from the serene beauty of the beach. I also scanned parts of the piano score (my wife plays) for the film to add as a background texture, but that also had to go. It just got in the way.

I have several other ideas for a Piano cover, so I may make another, not quite so serene, soon.

Quoting myself now. You'll notice on the front of The Piano, the lone figure is placed just west of centre. Not quite Rule of Thirds, but enough to offset the lifeless center composition. The horizon line and the Piano title treatment are placed more or less on the exact vertical thirds. I never adhere strictly to the rule, but it's a good starting point.

Thanks for the feedback.

As for the title. I was just focusing on the image, I had to opt for a whiter colour :)

Just a few tweaks away then I think I'm done. I will do some variations later.

@Nissen

I'll do singles np. They all have awesome menus. The best I've seen on BD IMO.

Another attempt at The Piano.

I feel this is a bit bolder than my previous one. I usually don't make variations on a cover, because I think it's better to just make a decision and stick to it.

They're both available by PM.

BTW, I've been petitioning the mods to make this thread a sticky. Maybe if more people chimed in?

Great idea.

I have been working on putting together a James Bond template and I wanted some opinions on this WIP.

Keep in mind this is a template, but I wanted to see it through to an actual cover and since I had been using "For Your Eyes Only" material building the template I decided to use that movies material.

Learning from my "Flash Gordon" experience I selected high resolution artwork from the outset.

I almost prefer the custom cover without the title treatment on the front, but would be appreciative of suggestions and/or comments. Which do people prefer? Is it wierd not to have TT on the front?

Also, is it just too busy on the back cover. I have seen custom covers much busier but I am wondering if less is more?

Scroll down just a little bit and pick your version. They can be used for free. Once you install it, download the Turtle Winrar files and extract them.

I totally agree. not to mention, once the digital copies are used they're pretty much wothless and now I have disc I could use as coasters.

What software do I need to make custom covers? Printshop, photoshop, printmaster or something else?

Thanks.

I've been making covers, off and on, for about 8 years, and most others I've spoken to use either Photoshop or Paintshop Pro.

darmar106 09-05-2011 02:59 PM

Has anyone ever made covers for Hellboy 1 & 2 using theeir respective Struzan art?

Nissen 09-05-2011 04:32 PM

NOTICE REGARDING MY COVERS:

Due to the unfortunate fact that I messed up, most of my covers have the spine slightly off-center. It had slipped in my original template and I only caught the screw-up yesterday.

This affects my Star Wars covers (both series), my Superman covers, Punisher, Chaplin and Rocketeer.

The Conans (all four of them), The Shadow, Cyborg and Captain America are NOT affected).

All covers have been fixed and the new versions uploaded. Those of you who downloaded my affected covers should do so again. You'll find them in the usual place.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Fritz
