These are for DVDs once again (these movies aren't on Blu-Ray).

Shout Factory via Time Life recently put out a set of Seasons 1-7 of Power Rangers (1-3 being the "mighty morphin" era, with 4-7 being when the show started changing subtitle names each season).

I'm working on custom covers for the two movies that will match up with the sets. The designs of the "Mighty Morphin" sets vary a bit from the looks of seasons 4-7. As such, I am making the cover of the first movie match up with the look of the "Mighty Morphin" sets and the look of the second movie match the 4-7 sets.
[Show spoiler]
I started work on both of them over the weekend, but ended up getting a lot farther along with the second movie. So, what's posted below is my progress with that one (I did start on the first movie, but I'm not far enough along to really post anything with it yet). I did a low quality test print last night... a few things on the spine some minor adjusting the properly match up with the corresponding season sets, but for the most part it matches.

Some items to note... Each of the Season sets has a black box at the top of the spine with a white outline and white writing indicating the number of discs in the set. For the movies I am putting a B&W version of the 20th Century Fox logo in that same place. Also in order to maintain as consistent of a look as possible, rather than entirely omitting the Shout Factory logo from the lower part of the spine, I instead took it and edited it so the same basic shape is there but with the words eliminated. It serves no purpose for the films themselves and is basically just a "random design" on the case, but it helps maintain the consistency. Also, in place of where the season number appears on the 4-7 sets, I instead put "Movie II" to help maintain consistency, but going with the roman numeral look instead of regular numbers so it won't look too confusing when displayed between Season 4 and 5 (which is when the movie takes place chronologically).

Also the background coloring for each season set is based around the color of one of the rangers, with that ranger appearing on the spine of the box. Since there was no green-based set, I went with that for this box. The first movie will be based on the White Ranger, which is proving to be something of a challenge.

So, yeah, I know, it's geeky. If anyone care, I welcome comments and (constructive) criticism. :)

Hail to geekiness  :D

I don't know much about these series... only thing that I know is one of my most preferred B-movies director (Isaac Florentine) worked a lot on this Power Rangers series and that I always wanted to see the episodes he directed :)

Reworked my rework of this Indiana Jones title:

http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/2...ustomcover.jpg

This involved quite a bit of manipulation of the original poster which was too thin and wide. As I did with Last Crusade I reformatted the box to make it more square by separateing the top and bottom of the box and then bringing them back together. Then rearranging the inside elements to fit the template box.

I also found a piece of art for the top of Indy's hat which fits seamlessly. If you look at the poster art his hat is cut off.

Speaking of "The Hunger Gamers" my custom Blu-ray cover has become my most uploaded cover on Customaniacs. Which is rather stranger considering that I threw it together in a couple of hours but other titles I have worked days on hardly ever get noticed.

By the way Imrahil I have spent the day playing with Content Aware Fill and Content Aware Move with my CS6 and I am officially a believer. I was impressed with Content Aware Fill, but when I started using Content Aware Move I was blown away.

About a month ago I was trying to clone out the Great White Shark on the "Jaws" poster and to get it just right I spent almost an hour on it tinkering and readjusting it. This morning I came up with the same result using the Content Aware technology in about 10 seconds.

Hi Seth, I'm not sure if you were asking me but a 2-disc digi was about $15 maybe. It's been awhile since I bought any. I don't think Zoltan is making many lately.

You can check out their site at http://www.hazidigi.blogspot.com

Great looking covers runners!

Thanks for the answer. Now all I gotta do is figure out how to get in contact with them.

civiclx 08-21-2012 05:03 AM

Hi Seth,

I think they removed their contact link on their site. If I hear back from Zoltan, I'll let you know if they're still making them.

SethRex 08-21-2012 05:24 AM

Alright, thanks.

Just a tad too cramped on the front top, there.

Try cutting up the tagline and spreading it over two lines only, to give you some more breathing room around the edge.

I'm glad to see you're keeping all the text and bits from the original poster. Gives it that authentic vintage feel.

You know me, I have not made any modification on the cover I never do that I want it to be what it was released like, so no changes, but I see your point.

Sven1976 08-21-2012 10:22 AM

If only I had any skills in this department. I would love to have a specifically designed Tony Scott collection series, those Disney covers with the big blue edges annoy me. Be great to have them all alongside one another in a uniform kind of way.

The back cover looks great, however I do think Nissen is right about the front - ie it is too cramped. I know that's the original poster but I don't think there would be anything wrong with putting that tagline over two lines.

I'm also not a fan of Warners spine layout with that vertical Blu-ray logo. Since this movie was originally released by MGM I have always used an MGM style spine for this movie. As it is the composition makes no sense because your front poster says the movie is an MGM release, but you have a Warner spine.

So I'm not just blowing smoke - here's a quick mock-up to demonstrate that even knocking the tagline down to 2 lines the poster still retains that classic feel:

Here it is in 3D (using the back cover I made for my custom)

Honestly, I have never sat through this. Might have to find myself a copy and 3 hours of quiet time.

I would lose the middle tag line and the metro Goldwyn Mayer presents line. Will look a lot cleaner.

Tried multiple replacements for my current POTC slipcovers, but i think i finally have a design i'd like to go with, either for the slipcover or the inner artwork on the case itself.
