I swear, some haters are just so busy fuming and frothing at their mouths they don't even bother framing their answers within the context of a question anymore. They just go on spewing vile and hate randomly.

"Because he's absolutely right"

I agree, such vile (bile?) and hate. It really is outrageous, the vile and hate. It's just so, vile and hateful.

and yes I clicked on the "zoom"......

That's what I thought too... I had a hard time telling the difference. Doesn't look like a AAA transfer from the screen comparisons.

To answer your question, I found it surprising that someone still in the industry and not as active as he would probably like was so scathing in his comments about one of the industries most influential figures. An outburst like that will not endear him to any of the directors that work in the FX domain, such as Cameron, Spielberg, Jackson etc etc who all hold GL in high regard or are close friends of his. Surprising as Star Wars is a bit of a cash cow even for him (he is all over the special features) and he has basically bitten the hand that feeds him. Surprising, as I said.

Agreed. Improved contrast is what I wanted and it looks like I got it where it counted. As far as resolution goes, there's an obvious and immediate improvement. I don't know how people can't see it. Look at the models or the hair on people's heads. Compare the detail in several shots - the DVD looks nearly blurry compared to the Blu. And I never even zoomed in on an image - it's just obvious.

But the difference in contrast is tremendous, thank God. I can sleep happy now. Very excited for the set! Finally, a disc version of Star Wars that looks as good as it used to waaaay back in the day!

PS. I also noticed changes to colour timing, particularly on Tatooine in ROTJ. The sand went from orange to yellow. And C3P0's leg looks more silver than it did on the DVD, which is certainly a good thing as well.

Eh...I don't know. For one, his outburst is justified, and everyone in the industry who is fairminded would cut him some slack because of that. For two, Spielberg at least agrees in principle with the anti-Lucas fans. He won't call Lucas out because they are friends, but Spielberg has come out and responded to fan criticism of his own changes and admitted he was wrong. So I don't think Tippett speaking out is going to hurt him in Hollywood circles. Most people probably think Lucas has gone too far with other people's work anyway.

What's most frustrating, though, is how poorly done the changes have been. We can fight over whether Vader's "No" belongs there, or whether the Krayt dragon scream needed to be changed, but there's hardly any argument that the sounds that are there now are godawful and amateurishly done. If anything this is going to make it harder for Lucas to find the best of the best to work with him on future projects. Sure, the money would be good, but there's no guarantee your work will even exist in five years.

EDIT: And those pictures do look slightly better, but nothing to flip out over. Maybe it's the limitations of it being an older movie, but the difference isn't astounding, it's just a bit better. I'm debating on whether to buy this, as I'd like to have the prequels and ESB, but I might have to keep my DVDs of ANH and ROTJ until the next set.

Am I missing something? They're like... half 1080p resolution, hard to judge much from that...

A guy on AVS posted some full-res captures from what's supposedly the blu-ray a while back:

Bluyoda 09-02-2011 11:21 PM

What I don't understand is why GL adds CG rocks in front of R2D2, makes the Ewoks blink, and stuff like that, but doesn't care about the poorly done lighsabers!!!!????

I really don't care about the additions, but it seems so random, and nonsensical.

Adding the Dug in Jabba's palace for example.

Wouldn't it have been much better if they replaced that god-awful blue elephant on the organ???

I still can't believe they didn't fix the lightsaber issues on the MF, when Luke first ignites it.

It's just baffling!

I'll soon see for myself, if those leaks were indeed the final versions.

I like Vader's No though, although it wasn't really necessary.

Just my 2 cents. :)

I canceled my order today, and decided to order both trilogies seperately. Besides liking the artwork more, the deleted scenes are dissapointing. 95% of the good scenes from the PT are not in this set! It may seem kinda silly, but I am a poor college student, and save $10 this way.

mzupeman 09-02-2011 11:43 PM

I don't really care about the Ewoks blinking, about Dug in Jabba's palace, Kenobi's new call to the sand people, or any other minimal changes. Even in the case of Vader saying 'Nooooo', it's disappointing for me to a certain degree, but it doesn't break the film for me either.

I'm personally very excited to see Star Wars come to Blu-ray, even with the minor changes. Just from the screens we've seen thus far, even though they're scaled down, I think the results are pretty impressive. I grew up on Star Wars, and had a Rancor toy when I was 5. I prefer the UOT, but, what can we do? It's not one of those situations where the fan base isn't being vocal enough. The creator is choosing his vision over what the fans want, and I've learned to live with that a long time ago. And really, the special editions that came to theaters some years ago was the first time I was able to see the Star Wars Trilogy in theaters... so they DO hold a special place in my heart as well.

kenkraly2004 09-02-2011 11:44 PM

My take on the whole changes on
blu-ray controversy , I still like all 6 films no matter how many
times they are changed. The changes don't bother me all that much. Are
all of them good no but it does not take my enjoyment away from
watching the films because I like all the star wars films. I am still
going to buy the blu-ray box set because I'm a star wars fan always
have been always will be.

Don't hate on Max Rebo. He's the least of the problems in ROTJ.

It does sound silly. IMO, the meat of these sets is in the supplements.

What's unfortunate is that judgment on the actual PQ will be affected & overshadowed (As it already has been) by the new tweaks.

Regardless of ones stance on the whole subject, both sides should be rejoicing. Those who like the SEs will have them, and they'll look great. For those who don't, now the fan-editers will have a great source. You'll just have to wait a little bit longer. Both camps will get what they want, and in great quality too.

Responses like this demonstrate to me (but not the moderator who deleted my SW Special Features thread) that we could do with a thread dedicated to Star Wars supplemental features alone, including things like packaging, box art, featurettes, comparisons to previous editions on earlier formats like cassette, LD, DVD. There could be some interesting discussions on these things, but they are of interest only to a minority and get lost in the mix here, which is primarily a thread for registering complaints. Hmm, maybe there could be just a complaints thread too?
