But thinking Yoda would look somehow worse than the muppet he is (especially apparent in HD) is misguided.

If they can replace Yoda and look as good or even better I say go for it.

So ignore the performance altogether?

Ideally, it would only enhance it and make it more believable.

Despite my love for the prequels and the CGI Yoda, to replace the puppet Yoda with the CGI one would be awful because of the hard work that was put into the original Yoda to make it work.

In any case, George Lucas has said he would never replace the puppet Yoda with the CGI one, for reasons which are obvious. So OT fans need not fear.;)

We don't want to disrespect the fans of the movies or Jim Henson's hard work but the OT Yoda looks so fake and out of place, I think they'd be doing him a favour to clean him up and animate him digitally. ;)

The many faces of Yoda:

I hate to say it, but I actually wouldn't mind the upgrade. I've always felt Phantom Menace should be updated, but I don't think I would be all that upset if it was also done in the other two movies.

But they can't change the Empire and Jedi muppet. They just can't. The interaction between Mark Hammil and the muppet is what makes those scenes pop. I don't for one second question that it's not two characters inhabiting the same space. A new CGI Yoda* would stick out like a sour thumb and completely take you out of the scene.

And it wouldn't surprise me that if they went CGI, they would have Yoda flipping and flying all over the place. You know, because that would be like so totally awesome!

(* The only leeway I would give would be for the force ghost scene)

A CG Yoda all the way!!! :p:D

Seriously, Yoda in ROTS is awesome!:rock:

SonOfArathorn 07-08-2010 05:06 PM

Watching these on HD you get all sorts of ideas about things they could change in the old movies, I think they should re-build entirely new sets and re-film the whole of New Hope, it just looks fake and plasticky....

Joking of course.. but it does look like sh!t for the most part.

I'm sure the SFX guys put a lot of work into the strings on the TIE Fighters, too... doesn't mean that the digital ones in the ANH special edition aren't better in pulling moves that isn't possible with models and miniatures. Complete CG replacement might not be necessary, though. I think a mix of the live action and CGI is the way to go.

Having Yoda crawl up Luke's back like he did Chewie's in Ep3 would be interesting, no? More realistic walking instead of the "bumping" :D

Clean him up and improve on the puppet can be done, but use the puppet for your base. Having a solely CGI Yoda in the OT would distract fans from the film. New people watching it would find it OK though.

Well you can all think and hope what you want with a CGI Yoda for Episodes V and VI, But as I've already said George Lucas isn't going to replace him, he's said so on many occasions.:whip:

CGI Yoda is an abomination. Want better proof of how bad completely relying upon Blue screen and CGI is?

Watch Natalie Portman fire her blaster in, um, the 2nd piece of crap movie? in the Arena. She isn't even looking at what she's firing and apparently those blasters are weightless.

Sad really.

Yeas, right.

PS: An abomination is slavery. Or mass murder. Not a movie character rendering.

Are you talking about the front shots where the audience can't see what she's firing at?

She's holding an actual prop so your pointless diatribe really has no point.

Besides, that could have been an homage to Vader gesturing after the James Earl Jones voiceover was over in ANH. :D

No, no...the crap is only in the prequels, the originals are perfect don't ever forget that ;)

People actually found OT Yoda unbelieveable as a character? I remember him being real as all get out to folks! In the docs they do mention how they were afraid people would just see a muppet, but they went on to say that it worked fantastically because of Mark's performance. That puppet is a magnificent work of art and should remain untouched. Anyone remember the "enhanced" E.T. re-release? Uh, no thank you.

There don't need to be any more changes to the OT. Except maybe removing a few things. I'm not one who hates the Special Editions, but I do hate certain changes that I felt were completely unnecessary. Han's horrible dodge, the extended Wampa Scene and the Sarlacc Pit's Beak are the 3 that make me :cringe: everytime.

Yes, please use old movies for computer software guys to jerk each other off every 5 years for the rest of time.

What's incestuous about a brother and sister kissing? It's not like they were necking with tongue and groping. :p
