David Jaffe, the man behind PS3 exclusive Twisted Metal has revealed some more details about multiplayer portion of the game. Jaffe confirmed that Warkhawk lead designer is working on servers for Twisted Metal.

Jaffe also confirmed Twisted Metal Health Renegeration has been adjusted since E3 build. Now the rengeration went from 2 minutes to 3 minutes, this will allow gamers to make use the map a lot more rather then sticking around in one area.

Other additional details confirmed by Jaffe are as follows:

17 Competitive Multiplayer Vehicles
7 Online Modes
Co-op Split screen for Story

Twisted Metal fans who are hoping for a Collectior Edition of the game, disappointing news for all of you, as David Jaffe confirmed that there won't be a Collector Edition for the game at launch.
LOL. Message was too short?

Health regeneration...you mean like a pick up, and not what is currently the bane of gaming, today?

phranctoast 12-22-2011 05:59 PM

Either health packs or health charge stations. If there was regenerative health without the need of packs or stations it would make it near impossible to kill someone. As it is, the game is set up to last longer than the typical spawn kill spawn kill scenario.

My questions to Jaffe. He responded in neogaf to people complaining about the cover art.

As far as I can tell, no. I recall Jaffe saying that the game won't be supporting 3D, and the game would have to be both 3D compatible and support the monitors' single screen mode in order to do it.

phranctoast 12-22-2011 06:19 PM

I recall him mentioning it wouldn't be 3D as he said 3D in disgust as he doesn't seem to care for that tech and doesn't believe it adds to the game.
Having that functionality on that monitor would be the biggest boon that monitor would have IMO. It would bring back the old school competitions in the one room.
At least this one will have online MP out of the box, something no other console TM can claim.

So, he lied to us again, to help better the gaming community (that he wasn't doing a remake of TW:B, that is). That's our Jaffe.

Shame that the download won't be online enabled, though.

ooh Twisted Metal Black was a lot of back in the day. I wonder if they'll up the resolution (like all the HD "remakes")..

Maybe I wasn't paying attention, but I understood it as NOT being a "remake" or "remaster" of the game, essentially just copying the .iso file or whatever over to the disc with no online working. If that's the case, I don't think he lied at all.

Edit: From the PS Blog comments:

Curious if the TMBlack download is going to be the PS2 version, or an updated HD version.

TM2 version. No HD upgrade.

WOW i will buy it for Sure, PLEASE MAKE IT HD WITH TROPHIES

Sorry- no time to do those things. It’s not HD and it doesn’t have trophies. Hope you still dig the nod to the past while enjoying the upgraded, updated, and best ever (we feel!) Twisted Metal on PS3!
-----------------------------------------

Also, for all of you asking about TW Black, this clearly implied that Twisted Metal Black is coming to the PS2 classics collection anytime between now and February 14th.
The voucher he mentions is probably for that.

I have to counter the statement ‘this clearly implied that Twisted Metal Black is coming to the PS2 classics collection anytime between now and February 14th’ given I have no idea what your talking about :).
Are you suggesting Sony is going to sell TM:B on PSN? I’ve not heard about that, but I guess it’s possible. No idea if they are going to sell it and if they do, if it will be on sale before or after TM PS3 hits.

--------------------------
2. TM BLACK is not HD.
3. TM BLACK offers no online and no trophy support. It’s the actual game we shipped back in 2001
.
So NOT HD, no trophies, but unaware if Sony plans to release it on PSN and didn't bother to tell him.

Monkey 12-29-2011 03:54 AM

Hmm, well if it is a coupon or voucher it still could be locked on the disc, but it also could be on the PSN as a stand alone.

Either way it is pretty cool that he is including it.

When he said they weren't making another Twisted Metal (when they were) so that they could do an E3 reveal. But his comment says "again", which I technically disagree with, since Black isn't a remake/remaster....that we know of....for now....

Guido1977 12-30-2011 06:20 PM

Cant wait my b-day is the 12th so guess what ill be getting. I still have twisted metal black but cant play it any more since my orignal ps3 died on me and I had to get a boring slim model which sucks.

Guido1977 12-30-2011 06:25 PM

Simply awsome cant wait for this one. Just saw the video about TWB going to reserve this one right now.

I believe TM is built on the Warhawk engine and this makes sense that Warhawk lead designer is working on servers for this game.

From Jaffe
"(1p and split screen co-op). First off, it's the most varied Twisted campaign we've ever done. It's not just the rinse/repeat death match over and over of the old games. BUT it's not a mission based GTA style game, either. So don't buy the new TM expecting some sort of BATMAN:ARKHAM CITY story mode, cause the game's not that.

3. Game has three characters (Tooth; Grimm; Dollface). Each character has an opening, mid, and end movie. In between the movies, each character has 6 unique events spread across 8 levels. The last of the events is a totally unique boss, designed specifically for that character/chapter.

4. Each event is still very much tied into the core idea of vehicle combat. But the individual events/goals are more varied. For example:

*we've thrown some combat races in there (i.e. Calypso has strapped bombs to every vehicle...you must race the other cars to reach the detonation gate that arms the bombs and then be the first vehicle back at the starting line that hits the detonator pad that blows up all the other vehicles in the race....and the LAST race ((there are three of them)) has the detonator pad inside a moving semi truck that's racing down the freeway so things get nuts!)

* Two of the races force you to race thru gates that make up the course. You can bypass these gates for sure, but miss too many and your bomb goes off and you die. The harder the difficulty setting, the fewer the gates you can miss.

*We have modes that contain armed-for-bear semi trucks that can take you our fast and that spawn enemies out the back. These guys don't appear on radar so you need to track them and always have a sense of where they are because every 45 seconds or so a new enemy is dropped out the back of their trailer and onto the battlefield so you gotta hunt those semis down and take them out before they spawn so many vehicles that the event becomes impossible to beat.

*We have traditional deathmatch levels that you must fight INSIDE these electric cages that move around the level, forcing the fight to various areas of the map. Some of the cage configurations are big, some are super small and tense. And you can only be outside the cage for 30 seconds before your health begins to drain when you are outside the cage. So you have to manage your grace period carefully (leaving the cage at the opportune moments to grab weapons or use the 100% full health regen semi from Calypso industries, etc).

*Straight up traditional 'kill all enemies in the level to advance' levels.

* Endurance battles where enemies never stop spawning but you must take out 8 or 10 or 12 to win the event.

...so stuff like that. We feel it keeps the campaign unique and fresh while still staying true to the franchise (i.e. again, it's not turned into a mission based single player game).

* Once you finish an event, you can replay it at any time to earn medals (different from trophies). Earn all gold medals to get skins and other elements. Beating the game on HARD gives you the LASER PISTOL side arm. Getting ALL GOLD on TWISTED mode (the hardest mode) allows you to unlock WARTHOG. Both of these items (a side arm and a full on vehicle) can only be earned in campaign mode. So if you see someone online with either, you know they are pretty elite players!

Again, more details to come in the new year, but that should give you an idea of where we are headed."
Sounds great...
