Twisted Metal, the longest running exclusive franchise in PlayStation history and the multi-million selling series is now back, exclusively on the PS3 system. David Jaffe and Scott Campbell, co-founders of Eat Sleep Play and the original creative team behind Twisted Metal, bring back the dark humor, fast-action gameplay and a world of crazy cars, and weapons and destruction.

With four factions battling for control, players step into the combat boots of a twisted disciple in a high octane, highly destructible world. Players fight for the prize of one wish fulfilled by the stylishly evil Calypso, the mastermind behind the Twisted Metal tournament. Disciples strategically dismantle opponents in vehicles loaded with weapons of Twisted destruction.

With a robust online system, players unleash destruction with up to 16 players through PlayStation Network and battle through a variety of favorite and new game modes.

Twisted Metal carved out its own unique gaming genre. No other title has Twisted Metal’s perfect mix of dark humor and personality along with massive destruction in a distinctive atmosphere and vehicles and weapons that act as extensions of each character.

RAZGRIZ-1 06-16-2010 02:10 AM

I'm really excited for the new Twisted Metal as well! I spent hours and hours playing Twisted Metal 4 back in the day. :D I love the aerial combat. It really adds a new level of diversity.

I've been a fan of the TM series, so it was nice to finally hear a new one was being made.

The first minute or so of that video is terrible.

Gameplay wise, I'm not sure what to think of the flying bits (like the helicopter), but assume/hope those are some sort of killstreak bonus thing (like in CoD), in which case it'd be ok.

The destructible environments is pretty cool, but unless everything that seems destructible in real life is so in the game, it will be frustrating smashing into a wall that you thought was going to break.

Anyhow, looking forward to it.

They have added aerial vehicles. The helicopters are selectable vehicles.

Can't wait this looks awesome. The whole reason why I got a PS3 a little late to the party but it looks like it was worth the wait.

That long rumored Twisted Metal revival from Eat Sleep Play is real and Sony had the multiplayer portion of the game playable at its E3 booth, a vehicular combat game that might offend your sensibilities, but not for its gameplay.
While playing Twisted Metal—that's the final and straightforward title of the new PS3 game—I ran over dozens of innocent bystanders with my ambulance, aka the Meat Wagon, and launched hospital patients strapped to gurneys, bombs strapped to their chests, at my foes.
It's been a while since my last Twisted Metal experience, way back to Twisted Metal Black for the PlayStation 2, so coming to grips with the game's driving and killing controls took a few moments to get used to. But the new game, in which players control factions lead by Twisted Metal mainstays like the insane clown Sweet Tooth and the porcelain faced Dollface, instantly feels familiar.

Twisted Metal for the PlayStation 3 has many of the mechanics from previous entries, with special weapons like lock-on missiles and shotgun blasts scattered around each map. My favorite is the hellfire-like missile that paints a splash damage target on the battlefield just after launch and lets the player choose the moment of impact.
In the Meat Wagon, which I spent much of my time with, the aforementioned exploding gurneys it could launch were capable of being fired in a straight line or, after firing, could be manually steered by pressing the triangle button.

Plus, there are flaming chainsaws. So... there's that.
Twisted Metal for the PS3 adds aerial units to the series, starting with the attack helicopter known as the Talon. Players can either control it from third person, flying around the map to attack. Or they can sit in the gunner's seat, manning a mini-gun. Players on the ground won't be left defenseless against their aerial foes—lock on missile work great in taking them down.
The PlayStation 3 entry also adds healing vehicles. These massive trucks roam around roadways and offer a chance to repair your vehicle, should you have the skill and patience to drive up the ramps they're towing. But who doesn't like driving off amid vehicular carnage?
The controls in Twisted Metal are very arcadey, with the accelerator mapped to the DualShock's square button—tap it twice for a boost—and a brake on the X button, capable of making some very sharp turns. Special abilities like force fields are mapped to the PS3 controller's cross pad.
Twisted Metal at E3 was all multiplayer, a live session between players on the floor. As we took down foes, experience points popped up onscreen, showing how the game's persistent online progression will work. According to Eat Sleep Play reps, we should expect a leveling system and the becoming standard perks, a la Modern Warfare, in Twisted Metal.
Eat Sleep Play reps said they weren't ready to address the game's single-player mode, so keep an eye out for that. Don't, however, expect to play the game in 3D, like many other PlayStation 3 games. Eat Sleep Play says it's not happening right now.
Twisted Metal feels like both a modernization for the series and a return to form, delivering the chaos, brutality and great multiplayer gameplay the series is known for.

The PlayStation 3 Twisted Metal is planned for a 2011 release.

I guess they're using Santa Monica Studio tech again. Should look nice despite Eat, Sleep, Play's smaller team size.

Denoku 06-16-2010 06:48 PM

Santa Monica=awesome!

I remember Jaffe talking up the graphics from GOW3 when he visited Santa Monica Studios. At that time he mentioned that his new game will be using Warhawks engine.

I could see that as Warhawk has a kind of TM look to it with the exaggerated look of the characters. I don't really know how to describe it other than, you can see Incog's and Jaffe's finger prints all over it.

Trailbreaker77 06-17-2010 01:42 PM

I am glad I was wrong about this game, next year I will be broke.

Yep, Calling All Cars and Warhawk shared the same tech too.

"Regarding the attacks on our visuals, I have this to say:

1) We deliver an anti-aliased, 720p, HDR experience. We support 1080p
output (with noticeable improvement to UI elements). We’re not “sub HD”
by any stretch of the imagination.
2) We’re still pre-alpha which means we aren’t even done writing
graphics code let alone tuning the art content to go with it.
3) Many textures and shaders are pre-alpha quality and will be improved.
4) Most screenshots and video on the web were taken from video cameras
rather than direct screen capture. They don’t represent even our
current quality level.
5) We don’t want to drop our frame rate even though we have a megaton of
action on the screen with dynamic physics and lighting (and eventually
four player splitscreen!)
6) Our levels are large with very long draw distances. Everything you
see is an interactive world, not simply static geometry. A lot of it is
destructible.
and finally,
7) We haven’t even shown our best stuff yet. If anything, we’ve only
shown our oldest stuff, and our artists keeping discovering new ways to
improve visual quality.

SO- with all that said- I think players are in for a treat all around, visual included. Our team is super talented and crazy hard workers. It’s only going to get better from here!

David"

Personally, I believe anyone complaining about pre alpha graphics need to find a new hobby.

Hmmm...I wonder when this releases, we'll get to have an online gathering like we used to in Warhawk? Good times.

These days, there are so many games that it seems difficult to get anything going these days.

I've tried twice to get a ModNation game going - just no one around. :(

BlackLightShark009 06-24-2010 06:03 PM

I'd be down to play Twisted Metal with all of you. The game looks sweet!

Monkey 06-24-2010 06:08 PM

Warhawk engine is one of the best there is IMO. This games should end up being buttery smooth with tons of action :whip:

I wish I could play TM:Black on the PS3.

Ahhh, we might give it a try anyway. Warhawk was a pretty niche game, but we still got that going alright.

The Warhawk leaderboard went over a million awhile ago, I wouldn't exactly call that niche :)

Well...niche in the sense that it wasn't heavily promoted like a lot of games nowadays.

Shin-Ra 06-25-2010 02:11 PM

The God of War style main menu's .

You can see it direct feed 720p at reasonable quality in the last Sony E3 press conference video.

martinstraka8282 06-26-2010 12:55 AM

Well I'd love to say that I'm psyched for this game, but that wouldn't be enough... I AM SO ****ING PUMPED FOR THIS GAME LIKE NO GAME BEFORE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Twisted Metal franchise has stolen more of my time than any other game franchise other than the NHL series. With Jaffe behind it, I have no doubt it's gonna be awesome.

Love that it has 4 player split-screen, I have friends over a lot and we play on a 110" projector setup, so split-screen still matters to this guy. We really struggle with split-screen games these days because nobody seems to make it a feature in their games. Split-screen Twisted Metal is about as nostalgic as it gets for me. Thank You David Jaffe!

Psybits 06-26-2010 01:49 AM

looking from the trailer seems like there might be team battles

DefTechPioElite 06-26-2010 02:30 AM

I've never really played twisted metal, this looks bad ass though! I have a ps2 and ps3, what Twisted Metal game would everyone recommend for me to go back and play to get the best experience?
