Lets see - I got up at 6:15 on a Saturday morning, I've done 3 loads of laundry and put them through the drier already, and have two more loads to go... I drilled out all the rivets and removed the flourescent light guts inside the remaining three light sconces for the theater, washed and prepped them, and put the first coat of lilac paint on them... and after lunch I'm going to cut all the plywood panels for the 3 columns, and then hopefully put a coat of primer on all the pieces - it's already 51 degrees outside, and supposed to be even warmer tomorrow, so I gotta get as much woodworking and painting done as I can while the weather is warm...

I also have to get groceries today, go to the drug store and pickup prescritions and cold medicine for my oldest daughter, take my empty Keg to the Distributor to get a replacement keg and hook it back up on tap, and get my basement ready for a small New Years Eve party tonight. :faint: :whip:

I just setup my DLNA network on my new TV. I was amazed how simple it was. Also created an account on Pandora. Now I need to run audio from the TV to the AVR. The TV will output stereo or DD so I'm going to run an optical out. I just used wifi for now but plan on hardwiring the setup soon.

Starting my fifth load of laundry after I type this. Did the grocery shopping yesterday before I took the wife to Walnut Creek to shop. Oh yeah I also cleaned the back and front yard and mowed the lawn and spent a good part of late last night getting rid of the NAT type 3 on my PS3.

Well, it's 5:30pm, and I'm done with everything I mentioned on my list above except I didn't quite get all the panels cut before it got dark. I'm cleaning up the basement now, getting ready for company for New Years Eve... Just a drive-by on my own thread - back to work I go! :whip:

Happy New Year Troy

FREYMAX 3D 01-01-2012 01:12 PM

Happy New Year to you, HTG - and to all!

Wow, are my muscles sore this morning - I really over-did all the manual labor yesterday, and I was on my feet all day - very bad for me. Standing and bent over working with lumber on sawhorses did me in. My ankles, knees and hips ached so much last night I really couldn't enjoy my New Year's party very much at all... :(

Had a few extra people come last night, nine of us there for the party. The one couple brought their 11 year old daughter, so when it was time to pick out a movie, we let her decide... The only blu-ray movie I had PG-13 or below that she hadn't already seen was "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" so that's what we ended up watching... Then we switched over to the Directv and tuned in to Dick Clark for the countdown - with the big screen, it felt like we were standing right there in Times Square - except without the cold weather!

Ah! I definitely need some of that medicine...let me at it! :kissing:

Well, been slaving away all day again today, got my columns and panels all painted, ready to screw the frames to the wall tonight and nail the front panels on - should have the lights mounted and working by tomorrow night or Wednesday at the latest!

Here's my cramped working space inside my nice, clean garage... :ohnoes:

OK, for all you guys on here that insist on worshipping me as the Carpentry God that I am (lol!), here's a good example of "thinking ahead" in my construction that I want to show you... :D

Each of my columns are attached to the wall using only four 3" drywall screws, one in the center of each of the four crossmembers in the framework. Because each column is centered over a seam between the wall panels in order to hide them, I have to run the screws through the center of the crossmembers because that's where the stud is located behind the wall to screw in to. I was worried about this manner of mounting, because the vertical sides of the columns are not attached to the wall in any way; I was concerned that heavy doses of LFE in the theater would cause the wood frames to vibrate and rattle against the wall. I didn't want to glue the frames to the walls, because I wanted them to be removable if need be in the future, without damaging the wall panels behind them.

My solution: I bought a few rolls of truck camper-mounting tape at the hardware store (used to seal the seam between truck caps and the truck bed) which has adhesive on only one side, and applied it to the back of the side members of each of the seven columns... the foam will provide a thin padding between the wall and the frame, and prevent any rattling during an explosive movie or when playing bassy music...

Am I be smartz or what?

Your HT is looking Tremendous dude - These last few items & you'll be all set, right?

FREYMAX 3D 01-03-2012 03:41 AM

Yeah, pretty much just some odds and ends left after that - but the columns have a lot of moulding work to be done after they're up - baseboard and crown moulding, and corner trim... also, I still have to tile the one closet under the stairs yet... Door trim around 3 doors yet, and get a couple 5x8 throw rugs made - either purple or black carpet most likely, and get the carpet place to bind the edges... probably more painting, in the bathroom. it will be an ongoing process for a while.

Then in the Spring - 3D Projector!!

Hi BDS, I just posted up a reply to you over on Hometheatergeek's thread... Thanks for the compliment - If you were looking at my Gallery photos, though, those pics are way out of date now - my basement flooded from Tropical Storm Lee back in September, and I had to reconstruct the entire theater, still working on it.

Here is a link to a page on my freytheater.com website that has all the photos of the flood and the restoration effort, except for the latest photos I posted up here in my thread in just the last few pages...

lol, well Brian, the reason the screen goes all the way to the floor (almost) is because the ceiling in my basement is only 6'6" high - so not a lot of clearance for a 120" screen... the nice thing is, when you are sitting on the sofa in the front row, your eyes are exactly level with the center of the screen, so it is at the perfect viewing height. the video from my projector JUST clears the center support beam of the house running across the middle of the ceiling, in order to hit the screen properly - tight clearances all around!

The website is mainly for the use of all my guests that attend my Monthly Movie Nights each month, I post up the movie and dates/times on the home page, and add a trailer and movie review on the Next Showing page, for their benefit. My January Movie nights are coming up this Thursday and Saturday nights, for Rise of the Planet of the Apes, guess you saw that already though, if you went out to the home page...
