Just checked the Fedex site, my projector is in the main Fedex Hub for this area, Lewisbury, PA, in York County, about 15 miles north of where I work. So, it will definitely be in the Lancaster Fedex Store tomorrow, for me to pick up.

Well, yea - 35 miles is NOT a short 10-20 min drive (like my Other BB location). My main one is 5 mins from my house. --- Good to see your PJ should be there tomorrow!!

It's good they created weekends specifically for HT upgrades - I suggest we officially declare the 2nd weekend of February of every year henceforth as "National Home Theater 3D Upgrade Weekend"... :D

AS long as you are paying for my upgrades I'll call it what ever you want to call it. Hell it could be T-ROY Weekend.

FREYMAX 3D 02-11-2012 12:59 PM

Good Morning, HT Enthusiasts! It's a lovely, snowy day here in Pennsylvania - great day to work in the theater room!

Just about ready to mount the new projector on the ceiling - temporarily in the exact same spot the old projector was mounted. I just want to get it up and running on the mount so I can do some calibrations. Eventually I may move the mount to another spot in the ceiling to get it out of the way of wandering heads, since the projector is so large.

Right now I have to run over to the hardware store to get some shorter M5 bolts - the ones I bought last night were a bit too long... I also want to get some parts to construct a security chain to attach to the mount as well - the entire projector and mount will be suspended by a single 1/4-20 bolt from the down-tube, and if the threaded base happens to pop out of the bottom of the tube, I don't want the projector dropping straight to the floor - a catastrophy just waiting to happen!  :ohnoes: The tube has holes drilled through it that I can mount a hook or eye to attach a chain to...

Anyway, now that I have both projectors down from the ceiling, I took a pic of the two side-by-side, so you can really see how much different in size they are - The Optoma weights 6 pounds, and the Epson weighs 18 pounds!

My sausage fingers have trouble typing on a regular keyboard, even - and I work in IT, lol... That's why on my computer at home, I still use a big old IBM PS/2 keyboard from the late 1980's, with the clicky-clacky keys...

http://troyfrey.com/forum/flood/ps2kb.jpg

SO anyway, I got my new projector installed on the ceiling mount, along with my home-made security chain - it's bigger, but it's not really that much more in the way than the HD20 was, so I guess I'll let it there for awhile and see if it works out...

How difficult is it getting the throw angle and ratio adjusted when you put a new projector in the exact same place of an old one? Was is tough to get the picture to fit the screen perfectly?

Not at all - If you look at the top of the Epson projector in the comparison photo, see the two smaller dials behind the big focus and zoom rings? Those are vertical and horizontal lens shift dials, to adjust the position of the screen image. SO, you just mount the projector pointing straight ahead and perfectly level, and then use the lens shift dials to zero-in the image on the screen. If I want or need to, I can even mount the projector way off-center, almost even with either side of the screen, and still get it to fall properly onto the screen...

Most of the higher end projectors have adjustable lens shift; My Optoma projector just has a fixed vertical lens shift, and no horizontal lens shift at all - so that projector has to be mounted perfectly cetered on the screen, and then because of my low ceiling, I had to tilt the projector upwards about 10 or 15 degrees to get the picture on the screen. That makes the sides of the rectangular image slightly distorted, angling out at the top - a couple inches wider at the top than at the bottom. Then you have to use keystone correction in the projector to fix that (just like the adjustments in old CRT monitors).

My Optoma has keystone correction too, but I hate using it because it messes with the native picture. Does the lens shift on the Epson squeeze or pull the picture?

No, lens shift doesn't distort the picture at all, so you don't get the image quality issues like keystone correction may give you. I didn't use the Keystone correction on my Optoma either, I just let the top corners of the image go out onto the black border around the screen - you could hardly even notice it.
