Sony showed off the AR features tonight at an event in Tokyo Bay. This is a look at the AR cards for the PS Vita. It is not the final design, and Sony said it would likely change.

The PS Vita will come with six AR cards, which can be used to turn the real world into a virtual gaming space. It will also feature markerless AR tech that will allow gamers to enjoy AR tech without the need of cards like this.

Shin-Ra 09-15-2011 11:12 PM

I don't find these uses of AR that appealing, I'd rather have a beautiful rendered game environment.

Stuff where what you're doing is linked to the real world like t@g and near presents/challenges make more sense.

"At present, there is no talk of a new Monster Hunter coming to PlayStation," replied Kawano.
Seems like Monster Hunter has indeed gone 3DS exclusive. This has got to be one of the biggest bonehead moves (or non moves) I have ever seen Sony make. This was the only IP they "had" that sold on par with any other IP in Japan.

This is all my opinion, but I think Vita will have a real hard time selling in Japan, 3DS has all the major franchises and is 10,000Y cheaper. And this is all SCEJ's fault. They are ultimately worthless and SCEWWS' black sheep. SCEA and SCEE saw the writing on the wall (no 3rd party is really loyal) and have been expanding and developing new IPs (both big budget and smaller IPs), guaranteeing future exclusive AAA games on future playstation devices whereas SCEJ has been sitting on their laurels the whole generation with only a handful of smaller titles made (Patapon and LocoRoco being the top ones). Yes, they have PD and ICO, those take forever to get made. Unacceptable. They haven't even developed a MH clone or a new top tier RPG this generation. Unacceptable.

I believe their attitude this generation is gonna bite them in the ass next generation. Hard. They needed to set up an internal RPG team and recruit top talent. On top of that they needed to buy out talented developers like the other branches have done.

If Capcom's not releasing another PSP MH, they've made the most bone headed move of any publisher in recent years. No sane publisher ignores five million sales, their best seller. Then again, Capcom's made most of the bone headed moves I can remember of late. There's a serious decrease in quality from their titles and they don't seem to be doing anything to change back like Namco.

PlayStation Vita Line Closed Off Within Thirty Minutes of Tokyo Game Show Opening

They can't wait to get their mitts on a shiny new PS Vita! :D

Shin-Ra 09-16-2011 03:50 AM

User interface demo showing:
  • peeling to unlock/come out of standby :D
  • first startup process with nice 3D earth in the background (now I'm sure Q-Games is doing the 3D rendering)
  • custom wallpapers (plus you can rearrange icons)
  • the PS button flashes blue!
  • super silky 60fps animation just like the XMB
  • the lighting on the main bubble icons is still really nice actually (seemed toned down in the latest still shots)
  • video playback
  • list views (at 5:25 there's an interesting stretch-apart effect when he first touches)
  • list views (the parent list folds away to the left in the background)
  • multitasking (pretty sure PSP does this with pictures and music so not the best demonstration)
  • peeling applications to close them
  • welcome park (practising PS Vita's features)

And the second guy doing the demos is a bit cackhanded (nervous probably)

mistakes he makes:
  • starting a swipe from outside the screen boundary or peel-target
  • not swiping across more than 50% of the screen either by lifting too early or swiping from the middle of the screen (so it pings back to the start)

(Sorry if this was posted before)

Awesome  Sucks about the storage device prices but that was to be expected since the console is cheap. They had to recoup money somehow.

Can't wait for this !

Aranha, not sure why you are bashing Sony here. From everything said so far it sounds like Nintendo bought (or is trying to secure) some level of exclucivity, not that Sony passed.

If anything it sounds like Sony are trying to say very little and not throw Capcom under the bus - which makes me wonder if they are still trying to actively negotiate something or they just can't announce yet that it will be out but out later.

I agree with Shin-ra. I don't see how Capcom shareholders are going to allow the execs to pass on what should amount to a slam dunk of several million sales in Japan. I know they don't care that it will drive system sales, but they will care about leaving some easy to grab revenue on the table.

Considering Capcom has shown some serious support already for the Vita it sounds like either there is some serious exclusivity money being thrown around or that Capcom already has a release plan and is just intentionally keeping it quiet at the moment. That still seems hard to blame on Sony.

PSVita external battery’s capacity to be 5000mAh, 9 – 15h of playtime in total

And that’s more than twice as much as Vita’s internal battery has (2200mAh). So logically if PSV’s battery lasts 3-5 hours, it means the accessory can give you an additional 6-10 hours and in total you will be able to play non-stop for an incredible 9-15 hours(!).

This external battery weights 145g, its dimensions are 70x67x22mm and it will be released in Spring 2012. Price is “undecided” yet, but I wouldn’t be very optimistic at this point. It won’t be cheap.

Septimus Prime 09-16-2011 07:42 PM

The only issue I have with that is where I would keep the battery. The thing looks like it doesn't really attach to the PS Vita, and I can see if too hot for pockets when it's in use.

StereoMike 09-16-2011 09:50 PM

The only accessory I need for my Vita is a case like the Logitech PlayGear Case I have for my PSP-1000. This thing is just unbreakable!

I didn't bash SCE, I bashed SCEJ, who IMO are worthless not only because of their lackluster game output this generation, but for various other reasons. The loss of MH, apparently now exclusive to the competitor, was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

Mavrick 09-17-2011 03:05 AM

Looks like the prices for PSV games are gunnabe about the same as current console games. I know Nintendo got alot of slack over this when the price of 3DS games was anounced. So I wonder how people feel about it for PSV games.

Disgaea 3 Return on PSV for example is ¥ 5,177 (£42.66/$67.38)

Where as Uncharted 3 is only ¥ 4,851 (£39.97/$63.13) or a non 1st party title like F1 2011 is ¥ 6,354 (£52.36/$82.70)

Are people going to be more accepting because the graphics are on par with home consoles? Or is there still an argument that portable console games should cost less than home console games?

Mavrick 09-17-2011 06:03 PM

Not sure if I'm surprised or not at the fact Sony had to close the lines for all 80 PSV demo units

Uncharted three was the most popular, where as MJ: The Experience HD was least popular and the last to comletely fill up. (I guess people were just that desperate to get their hands on the hardware itself! :p )
