Le Mans (1971) Steve McQueen - May 24th, 2011
Day one purchase. My dad, who passed 3 years ago, took me to the theater at age 8 and I have remembered it ever since as a movie like no other. I have come to appreciate it much more the past few years as I have become more interested in racing. This seems to be perhaps the purest race movie ever made.

Does anyone know if this will be region free or locked?

Well crap I thought this was out next week. Oh well. Still getting it day 1, now probably along with Grand Prix.
|
Review looks promising. Just a shame some reviewers here don't care to mention whether a film is region locked or region free. I can't imagine it being too hard to do as Pro-B does it every single time.

Mine's in the mail. I would have liked some more extras, like one on McQueen's coolness or career or love of racing. Perhaps something from A&E or Biography would be OK even. But so glad the movie quality according to the review is as good as the presentation I saw broadcast 2 years ago. This is one of many movies that has been on Starz, Encore or HDNet Movies in HD and has yet to be released on BD. Jaws, Midway, Tora Tora Tora (since released overseas), and Lawrence of Arabia have been out in the past couple years in HD. Plus there are movies streaming in HD off NetFlix not out on BD I'd like such as The Three and Four Musketeers. These aren't movies simply thrown in the scanner or upresolution, they are cleaned up with no artifacts and tons of detail. Who knows when some of these classics will be released.
Anyway, can't wait for Le Mans. This is my 3rd Steve McQueen BD, the others are Bullitt and The Getaway. But until it gets here, I got a great website you guys can check out. Its McQueen, with his leg cast, at Sebring, racing and researching how to shoot Le Mans. He came in 2nd to Mario Andretti, only lost by 22 seconds. Andretti's Ferrari broke down and he went over to the other team and talked them into letting him use their 12 cylinder car because he didn't want McQueen to win the race! McQueen was racing an 8 cylinder Porsche and with a left foot cast on but almost pulled it out. I am really kinda pissed at Andretti about this and don't like the guy because of this little act. Anyway, check this website, its got some excellent photos and this one is on McQueen at Sebring. http://theselvedgeyard.wordpress.com...-with-victory/ http://theselvedgeyard.files.wordpre...pg?w=600&h=375 And this is the Le Mans story. http://theselvedgeyard.wordpress.com...cing-goodness/ http://theselvedgeyard.files.wordpre...pg?w=600&h=736 |
For those not having it ordered already, it's listed for $20 on bestbuy.com and $18 on Amazon.com but today I saw the empty tags at Wal-Mart for tomorrow and they have it tagged for $15.
|
That is a great price of 15.00 at WalMart, my only issue is that many stores had Commancheros and The Hustler but my local stores didn't have them at all. Ended up going to Best Buy. My Amazon order already shipped so that isn't too bad.
Still a nice price. :) |
Picked it up today for $15. And it comes with a $7 coupon for an oil change at Jiffy Lube!
Did anyone order Grand Prix from Amazon and get it today? I see that Best Buy and Wal-Mart have it on their site but not in stores, Amazon says in stock, and our own blu-ray.com says it's not out until May 31st! So what's the deal? If Amazon is shipping them I might just order it from there. |
that's really weird.
my wal-mart had le mans for $20 not $15. EDIT: it's listed on their website for $17.86 so I don't know what the deal is. I guess I wouldn't be surprised either way, but I probably would have gotten it for $15. One thing is for sure--Wal-Mart is a great place to get these older bds from MGM, Fox, etc. etc. They had 12 O'Clock High and Some Like It Hot along with every other older title that came out today. $10 rocks for The Big Country and Some Like It Hot. I would buy every older title that ever got released if they were decent transfers at that price. Keep 'em Coming! |
