As nice as the BD set's special features sound, I decided to pick up the 3 old-school documentaries extant on VHS to supplement them.

Great Movie Stunts & The Making of Raiders of the Lost Ark

Great Adventurers & Their Quests: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

The best of the 3 in my mind is "Great Movie Stunts" because it really does go in depth on the physical side of stunt work and gives proper credit to the guys who worked on Raiders. Sadly, the corresponding documentary for Temple of Doom was only aired on PBS and never released on home video.

In case you're wondering, none of them contain any bombshells that the Lucasfilm Revisionism Machine® would want to suppress (unlike the infamous quote from "From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga", which unsurprisingly was the only one of the four old-school documentaries not included in the Star Wars BD set)...

That makes me wonder: If somehow one managed to get the George Lucas from 1977 in the same room as the current version, would they annihilate each other in a manner similar to a matter/antimatter reaction?

You're welcome. Also, supporting Lucas wouldn't be considered preemptive. That actually doesn't even make sense. One can show support preemptively, as used above, but the two ideas wouldn't be synonymous

I can make snarky posts too!

Snarky, maybe...lacking logic, definitely.
I would've quit when you blamed missed information on the use of your mobile device.

Is the bolded text supposed to somehow prove that your comment actually made sense?

Lacking logic is different than commenting on something based on information that was unavailable. THAT would be a mistake.

Which you correctly labeled as a you problem. Which is why I said thank you for manning up to your error.
I can do this all day long, much to the detriment of the rest of the thread...so if you feel the need to carry on, please PM me and we'll continue said conversation in that milieu.
I eagerly await your PM.

I'm glad they finally included The Making Of The Temple Of Doom (which I actually still have that on VHS!). I was disappointed that wasn't an extra on the DVD releases.

Jimmie 07-12-2012 06:43 AM

Oh this Lucas bashing is so 1999.
Get over it!

Jay444 07-12-2012 01:45 PM

Wasn't there a theory a while ago that "Lucas doesn't repeat extras..." or something. The extra list on this seems to put that theory to bed.

I haven't noticed any deleted scenese being offered on this. Are we sure the provided list is the final list or is there more to come? Just curious as I am sucker for seeing extra scenes.

It never gets old and is always appropriate when it comes to him. He definitely knows how to destroy franchises I didn't even think were possible to destroy.

It is old, actually. Anything that could ever conceivably be said about Lucas and how he destroys franchises and his classic films has already been said time and time again. You can't even BEGIN a Star Wars thread without it turning into a 'Greedo shot first' or 'Lucas raped my childhood' debate. I swear, if I tried to sell Star Wars birthday plates and napkins on Craigslist, somebody would be e-mailing me so they can cry about how their childhood was ruined.

People hate Lucas. We get it. Move on.

Back to some Indiana Jones goodness, please.

 I'll throw in an appropriate quote for good measure.

"I am surprised to find you squeamish. That is not your reputation. Anyway, it needn't concern you. I have the perfect man for this kind of work."

"Leave Brittney...uh...I mean George alone!"

Hahaha, couldn't resist.

Anyway, I think when I finally get this set in my hands that I might watch it in the following order: Temple of Doom, Raiders, Last Crusade, and finish with Crystal Skull. Never watched the Indy series in chronological order. I don't think it will change the experience any but might be fun.

Wasn't that theory already put to bed with the inclusion of existing audio commentaries and documentaries on the Star Wars Anthology box set?

I've marked the sources when each feature can be found on previous home video releases:

00:50:47:00 (THE MAKING OF RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK) [From 2003 DVD Trilogy Bonus Disc]
00:41:05:00 (THE MAKING OF INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM) [From 2003 DVD Trilogy Bonus Disc]
00:34:59:00 (THE MAKING OF INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE) [From 2003 DVD Trilogy Bonus Disc]
00:10:53:00 THE STUNTS OF INDIANA JONES [From 2003 DVD Trilogy Bonus Disc]
00:13:17:00 THE SOUND OF INDIANA JONES [From 2003 DVD Trilogy Bonus Disc]
00:12:19:00 THE MUSIC OF INDIANA JONES [From 2003 DVD Trilogy Bonus Disc]
00:12:17:00 THE LIGHT AND MAGIC OF INDIANA JONES [From 2003 DVD Trilogy Bonus Disc]
00:12:42:00 ADVENTURES IN POST-PRODUCTION [From Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Bonus Disc]
00:22:40:00 THE EFFECTS OF INDY [From Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Bonus Disc]
00:09:57:00 ICONIC PROPS [From Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Bonus Disc]
00:09:22:00 INDY'S WOMEN: THE AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE TRIBUTE [From 2008 Last Crusade SE]
00:08:12:00 RAIDERS: THE MELTING FACE! [Seemingly from 2008 Raiders SE DVD, but length is 37s longer on said source]
00:10:09:00 INDY'S FRIENDS AND ENEMIES [From 2008 Last Crusade SE]
00:58:08:00 THE MAKING OF RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK [ORIGINAL 1981 DOCUMENTARY, PREVIOUSLY ON VHS/LD]

This confirms that all the content (except the theatrical trailers, which may or may not end up on the main discs of their respective movies) from the bonus disc of the 2003 DVD set has been ported to the BD set's bonus disc, so it's almost completely safe to get rid of it.

-----------------------------

For whose who are wondering what's not included the BD set, here's what's missing (or at least not confirmed) from previous releases, sorted by where it can be found:

Missing Vintage Documentaries
- Great Movie Stunts: Raiders of the Lost Ark (47m43s) [1981 VHS/LD release]
- The Making of The Temple of Doom (51m22s) [Aired on PBS in 1984, never officially released on home video]
- Great Adventurers and Their Quests: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (46m17s) [1989 VHS/LD release]

Missing From 2003 Trilogy Bonus Disc
- Raiders of the Lost Ark Teaser Trailer (1m04s)
- Raiders of the Lost Ark Theatrical Trailer (2m34s)
- Raiders of the Lost Ark Re-Issue Trailer (1m40s)
- Temple of Doom Theatrical Trailer (1m26s)
- Last Crusade Teaser Trailer (1m29s)
- Last Crusade Theatrical Trailer (2m13s)
- Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb Game Trailer (1m47s)

Missing From Best Buy Exclusive 5th Bonus Disc (2003)
- Raiders of the Lost Ark Original 1981 EPK (9m56s)

Missing From Raiders of the Lost Ark 2008 SE DVD
- Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Trailer (1m55s)
- Raiders of the Lost Ark: An Introduction (7m48s)
- Indiana Jones: An Appreciation (11m40s)
- Storyboards: Well of Souls (4m16s)
- Galleries (Illustartions & Props, Production Photographs and Portraits, Effects/ILM, Marketing)
- Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures Game Trailer (1m19s)

Missing From Temple of Doom 2008 SE DVD
- Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Trailer (1m55s)
- The Temple of Doom: An Introduction (5m59s)
- Storyboards: The Mine Cart Chase (2m31s)
- Galleries (Illustartions & Props, Production Photographs and Portraits, Effects/ILM, Marketing)
- Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures Game Trailer (1m19s)

Missing From Last Crusade 2008 SE DVD
- Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Trailer (1m55s)
- The Last Crusade: An Introduction (6m13s)
- Storyboards: The Opening Sequence (3m40s)
- Galleries (Illustartions & Props, Production Photographs and Portraits, Effects/ILM, Marketing)
- Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures Game Trailer (1m19s)

Missing From Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
- Warrior Makeup (5m37s)
- The Crystal Skulls (10m13s)
- Closing: Team Indy (3m45s)
- Previsualization: Area 51 Escape (3m54s)
- Previsualization: Jungle Chase (5m50s)
- Previsualization: Ants Attack (4m32s)
- Galleries (The Art Department, Stan Winston Studio, Production Photographs, Portraits, Behind-the-Scenes Photographs)
- Theatrical Trailer 2 (1m48s)
- Theatrical Trailer 3 (1m51s)
- Indiana Jones: The Ultimate Action Hero Trailer (1m08s)

-----------------------------

Obviously bits and pieces of the 3 "missing" vintage documentaries were incorporated into their 2003 successors, but I'm still somewhat disappointed that they aren't being included in their entirety like The Making of Raiders of the Lost Ark is. Other than that, about 1.5 hours of other extant material from the 2008 DVDs of the 4 films is also missing (along with the 10-minute Raiders EPK), but it's still better than I initially expected.

Still, if you want to have every bonus feature ever released, you'll need to keep and/or acquire these:

- 2008 SE DVDs of the 1st 3 films
- Kingdom of the Crystal Skull [BD or 2-disc DVD]
- 2003 Best Buy exclusive bonus DVD with the Raiders of the Lost Ark EPK
- Great Movie Stunts & The Making of Raiders of the Lost Ark [VHS or Laserdisc]
- Great Adventurers and Their Quests: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade [VHS or Laserdisc]
- 2003 DVD trilogy bonus disc (only if trailers aren't included in BD set)

The one big question I have is what the 2 parts of "On Set with Raiders of the Lost Ark" (From Jungle to Desert and From Adventure to Legend) entail, as it's the only "new" bonus material that's been listed anywhere for this release...

Wow, that's better than I could've expected! So we get, basically, everything from the dvd set AND there should be new material on there, right?
As a extras buff myself, thank you very much for taking the time to post this list. I'm sure it will be useful to quite a few people who might be on the fance about purchasing this.

Thanks for compiling that list! I assume the BBFC list I posted isn't complete so some of those features may still be included.
