Blu-rays are very resilient.

Like others have said, you must be doing something wrong if some smooth cardboard is damaging them.

I don't see how anyone can scratch a Blu Ray without really trying. Sitting tightly between cardboard won't do it.

Agreed.

Unless they're damaged in manufacturing or shipping, I can't see normal use being an issue.

Whoever wants to unfurl their accordion snake case each time to play a disc, knock yourselves out.

I agree. One of Blu Ray's biggest selling points was how resilient they were and scratches really shouldn't impact the performance of the disc unless they are VERY deep. If you are getting really deep scratches from book packaging, then please stop storing your blu rays in a sandbox...

Put me down as another one who hates the book packages. I can't stand any of that alternative packaging. Give people the choice!

Darren Pillans 07-18-2012 02:42 PM

What I love about a Blu-ray disc is how difficult it is to actually scratch one.

What I'd give for CDs and DVD to have had the same durable coating. They're so fragile in comparison.

I borrow CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays from my public library. The CDs and DVDs are scratched to pieces, while the Blu-rays look almost as good as new.

Exactly.

Why does Warner screw us around with Digi-books? If they must have one, release the Amaray version simultaneously, and let us decide.

We're the faithful who still actually want to pay for physical content and they treat us poorly.

Does Warner usually release a Digi-book and an Amaray with each particular title? Any guesses on how long I'll have to wait to get the 3-disc Amaray? I'm not buying that digi-book as I only want to replace Blade Runner one more time, before the eventual 4K release of course.

More resilient, yes, but scratches don't have to be deep at all as the BD data layer is closer to the disc surface than DVD layers.

I never had a problem with the cardboard sleeves, but just prefer standard cases. better yet for space reasons I like the way they packaged the Die Hard collection. All in one case and will probably make a custom slip and do that.

So everyone that enjoys the digibook release is...unfaithful?

Personally, I love the book-style packages like Aliens, Rome, Star Wars. I'm glad to see this getting something similar.

Not in my mind, and I hear you brother. I had to buy and return that set several times over to get all nine discs without scratches. Now cue the inevitable responses from everyone that claims their sets were perfect the first time, which while they might have been, I'll wager they just don't check their discs carefully enough (i.e. under a bright, flourescent light).

What I'm not sure about however is whether or not the book packaging contributed to the discs being scratched. Typically, scratched Blu-ray Discs come that way from the manufacture and are the result of scratches to the media before the protective coating was applied.

the price for the set just went down by 6 dollars. total price for the set for me is now $59.54

I know I had to return mine once.

But as I have echoed a million times in this thread already... this isnt like the Star Wars packaging. This is more like the Planet Earth Special Edition set, which is actually worse. I had to return that about 5 times before I had discs with no scratches on them.

Once again, the US gets a book.

I'll be importing or waiting for individual releases.
