And it is not like I don't like 'classics', I have hundreds of classics (most war & western) most people have never heard about. But I have never heard of this movie... until now.

Don't like to spend aprox. 70 dollars for a 15min. movie I've never heard about, just because it's a steelbook.

I am pretty sure this movie would not have been as popular as it is now if it wasn't released in a steelbook packaging.

No Walmart or Target shops in this country :p.
Is that a positive or negative thing? I don't know...

What I mean by my comment is that it's a movie made 100 years ago, is silent and last 15 minutes. Beside hard core movie fans who would really be interested in such a movie? Plus even in the "hard core" category you would still only find a small percentage who would even want to own it and see it often enough to make a purchase worth it. Let's put it this way, it's not Titanic or Avatar, not something that would be interesting to most people. Those that purchased that movie are those who really wanted it and those hoping to make money with the steelbook sometime down the road.

I'm certainly interested. I like to think of myself as a budding cinemaphile and I've heard of both George Melies and La Voyage de la Lune, so I'd say this is a good entry point for seeing the humble beginnings of the movie industry. Want to see how we got to today's movies? This, along with The Great Train Robbery, is a milestone.

Speaking of which, where does this rank among oldest survivng films? I know The Kiss, A Train Arriving at a Station et al. are older, just trying to slot it in film history.

Not familiar with the group, sad to say. Did you mean the AFI or another source?

When we have a Booth Bijou movie night, we always show a cartoon before the main feature. In March, our main feature was 'Hugo'. So, in April, we thought it would be fun to skip the cartoon and instead show 'A Trip to the Moon' prior to the main feature. Most of our guests had also been here for the showing of Hugo so the A Trip to the Moon showing was VERY well received. Our guests loved it!

Admittedly, most of our guests' ages are in the 55+ range. But my daughter, who's is 34, thought 'A Trip to the Moon' was one of the coolest things she'd ever seen.

For those that already got their blu-ray from Flicker Alley, about how long did it take to deliver?

Received mine yesterday afternoon. Pretty fast shipping.
I'm not too trilled with the Air only soundtrack on the color version. It's cool music, but I would prefer all options to pick from. Kind of odd that had options for the b&w but not the color.

Happy with it overall.

It's because the color is a completely new restoration that only ever had the Air soundtrack.

Not sure why that wouldn't allow them to add audio options.

SteelBooks are now sold out at Flicker Alley too.

We'd like to give sincere thanks to all our customers who ordered our A TRIP TO THE MOON/THE EXTRAORDINARY VOYAGE Limited Edition SteelBook. Although the Limited Edition SteelBook is no longer available for regular sale, our Deluxe Combo Blu-ray/DVD edition is the exact same publication as the SteelBook, packaged in our standard Blu-ray case, and is currently on sale.

The Air soundtrack was contractually demanded by a contributor to the restoration, EMI France. They are obligated to put the Air soundtrack and no other with it for several years.

I live in Australia and want to buy this Blu-Ray, but it's Region-locked.
Does the DVD included within the combo include the exact same contents of the Blu-Ray disc (documentaries and all)?
Sorry if it's been answered - Everyone seems focused on the Blu-Ray disc and steelbook, I can't find anything online in regards to what is exactly on the DVD disc and I couldn't be bothered wading through 18-19 pages of this thread.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
The blu-ray isn't entirely region –locked, you do get a "not playable" message when inserting the blu-ray but you can override the region restriction by simply pressing on "top menu" which will take you directly to the BD's menu.
I don't know if this works on all blu- ray players though but it has been confirmed by other members than me.
I haven’t watched the DVD but I am pretty sure it has the same content as the Blu-ray.

Saw the color version today -> AWESOME!!!
I liked the Air score and never dreamed that I would enjoy this short so much. :)

I love the AIR soundtrack. It's so different -- as is the film. Weird, crazy, mysterious.

The steelbook is the prized blu in my entire collection.

i watched this at a friends place,i knew the 15 min feature and saw it x long time ago..
i asked he put it off 2 min into the showing....the AIR score is just plain dreadfull for this and makes the movie actually "sound" silly...while it's not.
glad i didnt buy it,a hefty price tag for a ruined experience....what a shame.
gonna have to wait x years untill the contract expires so they can get rid of the appaling AIR track and give us something appropriate fitting this wonderfull movie.

bruceames. 02-18-2013 05:12 PM

I have this as well (steelbook) and I enjoy the AIR soundtrack. The short is really weird and the AIR track fits that weirdness perfectly. I hadn't seen this before so I wouldn't have any predisposed bias against watching it with a much different track like AIR.

BTW, for those who are so inclined, it shouldn't be difficult to remux this Blu-ray with the traditional soundtrack over the color version. That is, as long as both versions have the same run time.

peterraes 02-18-2013 07:17 PM

yup,been thinking about that too...

good idea actually, would love to put on one of the 2 audio options available on the B&W version on the actuall color version.
i have 2 BD players at my home cinema,so with some wishfull thinking i might give it a try,has to be spot on to a fraction of a sec to avoid sync problems, but could work...
