A Trip to the Moon Blu-ray

Quote:

WINNER! 2011 National Society of Film Critics - "Best Film Restoration" Award

Flicker Alley is pleased to bring the original hand-painted color version of Georges Méliès' masterpiece, A Trip to the Moon (1902), to home video 110 years after its first release.

Georges Méliès, one of the celebrated heroes of Martin Scorsese's new movie Hugo, was a master of cinematic invention and enchantment.

Packaged in a limited-edition, SteelBook case, A Trip to the Moon also features The Extraordinary Voyage, a fascinating documentary directed by Serge Bromberg and Eric Lange about the life of Georges Méliès and the magic of film history and preservation.

When is it?

Yami 01-11-2012 11:08 AM

I can't find a date so I've tweeted them to enquire. It looks like it actually might be available now.

jbannow 01-11-2012 12:48 PM

Nice! I'm definitely going to be buying this one.

Donat96 01-11-2012 12:50 PM

Definitely buying this one. Pretty cool that it's a SteelBook.

I doubt it, it is available to order, but they would have announced it a while back if it were to be available now. I did order one though, just in case... :p

TwntyOneTwlv 01-11-2012 01:54 PM

I will definitely buy one. Need some more information though!

McCrutchy 01-11-2012 02:37 PM

I'm getting this as well, bonus that it will be a steelbook :).

Wally Q 01-11-2012 05:08 PM

I'm really looking forward to this release. I remember being mesmerized as a kid seeing this and I'm really looking forward to seeing how they've restored it. This will go well with Hugo when both are out on Blu.

P@t_Mtl 01-11-2012 05:10 PM

It is only going to be available with them?

bigshot 01-11-2012 05:51 PM

I believe this restoration is on Serge Bromberg's fantastic Saved From the Flames DVD series. I would like to know what else is on it though. It would make for a mighty short bluray with just one short film on it.

Did you even read the first post?

TwntyOneTwlv 01-11-2012 06:07 PM

Alright, screw it. I put in an order. This is too good to pass up.

Edit: Here's the link for anyone who is interested: http://www.flickeralley.com/fat_trip_01.html

In my defense, that wasn't incredibly obvious.

But still. I feel dumb.

All of their other titles are available at other retailers (Amazon, etc.) The steelbook may be unique to the FA site, I'm not sure.

We've got time before it comes out, so I'm just going to wait and see. I suspect we'll have an Amazon preorder link in a few days.

nateynate87 01-11-2012 07:03 PM

Are we sure this is a blu ray though?

Flicker alley has only released 1 blu ray to date.

Edit: oops nevermind. I see in the email they sent it says combo

Thanks! I am just not that interested in a steelbook, just the movies so I am hoping to have them from Amazon but I was scared this is like Twillight releases where it's limited and you can only get them from the website.

AIR is doing the soundtrack!

I'm very excited for this release. My favorite musical duo, Air, is reported to have created a soundtrack for the film.

Quote:

‘Le Voyage Dans La Lune’ (A Trip To The Moon) is a classic black & white silent film by revered French director Georges Méliès.
Released in 1902, this legendary 16-minute film is widely considered one of the most important works in film history, and the very first to use science fiction as its theme, incorporating special effects that were very state-of-the-art at the turn of the 19th century. It was loosely based on two popular novels of the time: Jules Verne's ‘From the Earth to the Moon’ and H. G. Wells ‘The First Men In The Moon’.
A hand-coloured print, the only one known to survive, was rediscovered in 1993 by the Filmoteca de Catalunya. It was in a state of almost total decomposition, and many years of painstaking, manual restoration took place until 2010, when digital technology finally came to the rescue. Following another year at the Technicolor Lab of Los Angeles, it was finally ready to share with the world. Eager to put a contemporary spin on this classic silent film, the producers decided to approach AIR’s Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel, to compose an original modern soundtrack, an enormous honour for French musicians, considering the film’s place in the canon of French cinema.
Spurred on by their work on this short movie, AIR decided to develop the project into a full album inspired by the film. Expanding the original musical themes beyond cinematic instrumentals, the album also features the vocal talents and lyrics of Au Revoir Simone and Victoria Legrand (Beach House). The band’s lunar fascinations have been evident since the beginning of their career with the release of the seminal 1998 classic Moon Safari. Now in 2012 Nicolas and JB have returned to explore the further regions of their very unique musical “space.”

I wonder if they might tie this release in with Hugo? I was actually hoping this would come as a bonus on the Hugo release, but I'll be happy even if its a seperate day and date release.

Arkadin 01-11-2012 10:36 PM

this was announced for France recently also.
if it's Flicker Alley we know it will be very pricey. I might just get an import version. not sure about paying $35 for a 10 minute film no matter how classic it is. Maybe MoC will get this for the UK or Bfi.

It's pre-orderable now from Flicker Alley for $29.96 shipped in the USA.

Ok, help me out. I recall reading about the French version, but cant seem to remember where (was it this site, Nitrateville, Criterion Forum)? I did a search here and couldn't find it. Wasn't the version from France also going to include additional shorts?

Yami 01-12-2012 02:19 PM

It was here and it does include more shorts but it isn't specified if they're on the Blu-Ray or the DVD

dumb_dutchman 01-13-2012 02:20 PM

...I didn't see this posted here, thought I would add it here also.

Bonus Features

This limited-edition 2-Disc BD/DVD SteelBook Edition also contains A Trip to the Moon in a beautifully restored black and white edition from original 35 mm elements with two separate audio tracks of music: An orchestral score by Robert Israel with the original English narration written by Melies; and a second track produced by Russell Merritt consisting of a troupe of actors voicing the various characters as performed in the U.S. in 1903, with piano music by Frederick Hodges. There is also an interview with the group AIR on the restored soundtrack, and two lunar-related shorts by Méliès - The Eclipse and The Astronomer's Dream.

Why is everyone discussing Hugo with this? How are the two related?

(I have never seen Hugo, nor know what it's about).

Yami 01-13-2012 05:33 PM

Hugo features a fictional version of Melies, the director of A Trip to the Moon. It also features clips from his films.

Georges Méliès is one of the main characters in Hugo.

retablo 01-13-2012 05:37 PM

The movie is cool and all, I just want to see what price point they set a 14 minute film. Yeah, I know it also has a documentary, but that's kind of like release one Chaplin short on a blu-ray.

Still, happy to see it restored and presumably looking better than the film prints I've seen of this.

Yami 01-13-2012 05:40 PM

Well it's already up for Pre-order

It's $30.

Yeah, I'm a little surprised they didn't include other Melies stuff on here, beyond the documentary. They've got a great DVD set of his shorts and they could have upped the content considerably... I'm taking a wait-and-see approach between this one and the French set.

Yeah I see that now... noticed it wasn't on Amazon or any other site.

$30 is way too much for a 14 minute film that I'll watch once, IMO. I realize someone has to make their money back off the restoration, etc... but that's like paying $2 a minute. Can't I call certain women for that price? LOL

Yami 01-13-2012 05:50 PM

I find it very surprising that they're not going to include some of Melies' other work in SD. I'll enquire on twitter

Yes but they probably could put a dozen or so shorts on, not just A Trip to the Moon (HD) and The Eclipse / The Astronomer's Dream (presumably SD).

Still not enough for $30. Of course they have to throw other things on the disc because they are trying to justify their price point, the just didn't put nearly enough on there. KINO released ALL 19 Buster Keaton shorts, with extras, in a 3 BD set that costs the same price. That's how you do it.

I'd like to see Criterion put out a blu-ray with 2 Chaplin shorts and charge $30 and see what the reaction would be.
