It's good. :)

At first, I thought that it was one of those figurine things that some people put out on their front lawns.

Good to hear it's a good thing.
Still don't know what it means though.

I'd better get on the stick- I've only seen one of those yet. :ohnoes:

Casually, it means you're a stand-up guy; I think the more literal definition in Yiddish (and German?) has to do with being a person of integrity and honor. (I had a Jewish grandmother :) )

Penton, Doc, Shark; don't forget Arsenal can go top of the table if they win 2-0 or better tonight

Who can forget?

Actually, I like being in second, in touch and with a game in hand- keeps the press at bay. :D

Is that good or bad?

I know your humour is dry, but I hereby cry out "impossible" that you've worked and lived in Hollywood all these years and can't speak Yiddish with the best of them.

Yeah, I said it. "We Built this City". :)

Further amusing anectdote? Jacobivici is my cousin's husband's brother in law. Go figure.

At any rate, thanks again.

In case you missed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Golden Globe award for Best Foreign Language Film………..
One of the few pleasant highlights, I thought, from what I thought otherwise were terrible picks. I'm only hoping that seeing Cameron pick up those two awards will shy actual Academy voters by making such a dumb move.

That said, I picked up AC and Cinefex today with the Avitards on the cover... It's a horrible story, but it looked purdy, and Weta/ILM/et al did a great job on the FX, and I'm interested in the nerdy Camera stuff.

At the least, it's elevated my expectations for how they're going to make the Hobbit look.

Yeah, if P-man don't know his way around a pastrami sandwich, well... neither do I.

And oh, I do.

Don't count on it. I think Avatar is well beyond a shoe-in at this point. If ever there were a release more tailor-made for the Academy's new "Accessible-ize the Best Picture" campaign... Believe me, the voters will get the message that *TEN NOMINEES* is sending and leap at the opportunity to make up for their The Dark Knight "snub".

Meanwhile, I feel pre-emptively sorry for poor Up!, in the animation ghetto. Considering running times, there's probably more animation in Avatar.

Nice to have you back, shark. :)

I was thinking the same thing, but was trying to find a humorous way to put it ;)

yeah, I just don't buy it. but, nice to hear from mishpoche.

THIS is why all cineastes have to see (and love) A Serious Man. It's showing up on far too few top-10 lists for 2009.

Before hand, do your research:

ps. Good list for the Haiti charities earlier, btw... Not sure if you've seen, they pulled out a 5 year old that's been buried for 8 days. Insane.

SpaceDog 01-20-2010 08:30 PM

My experience says that there are a lot of insulated and distinct crowds in LA.
I doubt many would know more yiddish words than Linda Richman would have taught all of us in the late 80's and early 90's.

You get over to Canada sometime and you'll taste -real- deli... NYC has its flair, but it's all about Montreal Smoked meat, and the institution that is Schwartz's

Toronto's finally getting its own thing going, was at Caplansky's last night.

I've got no idea what the Deli situation is like in LA, I'm sure there's some wicked awesome diners. Frankly, I'd just be eating hamburgers from the bazillion awesome places there.

yeah, I just don't know... It's irrational, I grant you, but I'm thinking that there will be some way of another film taking the top prize. I still haven't seen Hurt Locker (played TIFF in Sept, 2008, so it's taken its time to get props). I thought from the outset that Up In The Air or Precious would be the other front runners, and there's nothing else that they're really gung-ho about. I personally would -love- Basterds to take it, but we all know that's not going to happen.

Oh, for sure (re: anim. time). I liked Up! a lot, but I also don't see that as taking the prize.

In other words, I think it's not Avatar, but can't think of anything that'll beat it. I clearly should never make picks for a living.

Oh, believe me, I know all about it. I'm actually heading up there some time in the next couple months. I'd love to buy you a fatty, if you're around.

Meanwhile, I'm hittin' NYC this weekend.

Oh, dude... All this time I assumed you were a Brit! :)

In NYC you must go to Blue Ribbon... Super awesome place, a total Soho experience... The tartare is bad-ass...

If you've never done it, you've gots to try the Burger at the Meridien... It's a comically excellent place.

In Montreal, Au pied de cochon may not live up to its former self, but when I was there it was a sublime experience... Totally world class.

Meanwhile, Penton, if you want to blow some cash on food when you're in Van, I had sent you links last time you were up there... West if Sony's credit card is paying, or the Tomahawk in North Van if you are...

Well, I know that one.
That’s from the early ‘70s when the Houston Oiler’s offensive line let in not just one, but two defensive ends at the same time on a pass rush situation.

You guys can’t fool me.

These guys have convenient curbside service…..which is extremely important in L.A. because many folks live in their motor vehicles……

Thanks though for the heads up Penton!

Well, just about everything of that nature occurs on a “work night”.
But this event isn’t, so if you’re interested………
Series Details

Personally, I would leave early Saturday morning and go by submarine, the way things have been happening all week long outside.

P.S.
If you like The Wild Bunch and Kathryn Bigelow and don’t consider Friday evening to be a “work night”, this screening may be worthwhile for you too……….

The DVS track on the Brüno BD certainly evokes some disturbing imagery if you want to explore "interesting" versions of these. Perhaps less disturbing than the images themselves, but I suppose that depends on your powers of imagination. ;)

I agree that it would be great to see these become more commonplace on US Blu-ray releases since they actually open the Blu-ray to a wider audience which should make it a higher priority extra in my mind (as compared to further interactive fluff that is non-essential). In the past, it seems like these tracks have shown up with some frequency on UK and EU editions, only to be mysteriously absent from the US edition.

Also, if you know anyone at Universal, who have also now voiced a commitment to descriptive video service tracks on BD and DVD, please forward my thanks on to them as well. Disney included a descriptive track on Up on BD, DVD, and iTunes, so hopefully another major will be joining in here as well. I've said many times that if one major studio would commit to DVS, others would follow and now Sony has led the way.

Amen.

Thanks to heightened awareness due to previous requests on this forum many moons ago even I noticed.
