Is Dawn of the Dead worth buying for $14.95?

I hear it's the greatest horror movie ever and the Blu-ray reviews are great. Should I pull the trigger?

Simple answer...
YES :D

Check out Day as well...

If it's anything like the remake of Dawn of the Dead that I've seen (and I've heard it's even better) it would definitely be worth it for that price (or more). And the great Blu-ray review on top of that certainly doesn't hurt. Go for it!

Blu-ray Dawn of the Dead? If so, I would give you my copy for free if you would come pick it up, but others strongly disagree with my perspective on this movie?

Just keep in mind that it is 30 years old so don't expect too much in the way of effects:)

I actually respect your opinion more becasue of what I have seen you write about, I think we have a similar taste in movies and I actually think it would be a waste for me.

I think I am gonna pick up:

Donnie Brasco (extended cut) - $15.95
Immortal Beloved - $15.95
Underworld (unrated) - $14.95
Beer League - $9.95

I heard Beer League is kind of lame but its only $10 and I love Artie Lange.
If I hate it, I'll trade it in for like an $8 credit at Spinnakers.

pretty nice deals:)

I think maybe your expectation is a wee bit high. Don't go into it anticipating a masterpiece, because I know that people through that word around a lot in reference to this movie. I got it on sale for $12.99 w/free shipping and personally I think it's worth every penny.

Day of the Dead is also pretty good.

I agree original Dawn of the Dead=crap! But Zack Snyder's remake of Dawn of the Dead=awesome a must have blu ray!

Thanks. It is just MOP though. Can't miss with Underworld. I also enjoyed 30 days of night, 28 weeks later.

Absolutely! I want this version very much on BD!!!

Palanthian 05-27-2008 12:58 AM

I fully disagree with those who like the new Dawn of the Dead better...but hey everyone likes their own thing. To me the original is one of the best movies ever made, but I'm a die hard fan of George Romero's zombie films. :P

I must admit, I hated the idea that anyone would re-make Dawn, but Zach Snyder did an amazing job updating Romero's film. Having said that, anyone who thinks the remake is better is smoking crack. While Snyder's version is a great popcorn thrill ride, it lacks the social commentary that helped the original transcend the typical grindhouse drive-inn fare of the time. Some would say the movie is dated, and theyed be right, but dated does not equate bad. Others in comparing the two would say that the fast moving living dead of the remake makes them scarier. I personally disagree. The dread in Romero's Dead films have never been the dead, but the paranoia, distrust, opportunism, and outright sadism the situation breeds in the hearts of our friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, etc..... The undead are merely the catalysts for these very primal emotions that given the right circumstances can be forced out of even the best of us. Don't get me wrong, I loved the remake, and look forward to its eventual blu release, but even Snyder would admit, it doesn't hold a candle to the original. Give it a rental, and judge for yourself, unless you think Underworld is a great horror movie. In that case, move along.........
