i was sitting way back but I didnt detect it as "noticable" where it catches your eye, its there but not super noticable in my opinion

LordCrumb 09-24-2009 02:35 AM

hmm, when i was in Auckland a few weeks ago, a cinema in a mall had 'Wizard of Oz - One Night Only' screening.. wonder if that was in High Def..

Why would they? The grain wasn't scrubbed away for the remastering. Wizard of Oz has never been excessively grainy, so it sounds like we're getting a true representation of how the movie should look. ;)

Either way, the great thing is how wonderful and colorful the film looks.

wil_l_0w 09-24-2009 04:10 AM

I didn't even notice any grain.. But I was way in the back and that could of been a reason why.. But it looked amazing I just got back from the theater.

Those guys at Warner are on fire:

The new digital restoration of "Oz" is as close as one can get to the experience of seeing the classic in theaters 70 years ago.

Warner Home Video had digitally restored the film for the 2005 DVD release using the original nitrate negative, which has been stored at the George Eastman House archive for years. “At that time we thought it was absolutely spectacular,” says George Feltenstein, senior vice president for theatrical catalog marketing.

But when it became time to do the high-definition Blu-ray version, “what we didn’t realize was that the technology had improved so dramatically in the interim four years, if we had used what we did for the prior transfer, it would have been OK, but it wouldn’t have been breathtaking. It would have been half-baked. Thankfully, the opinion of the company was that we have to do this full throttle the best it can possibly be.”
Is this a thinly veiled jab at other studios? You be the judge.

Well I'm unsure at this point what other info/reviews I would need at this point as most everything has been quite positive. Well I thought of one thing, a good price. :)

quirkmanly 09-24-2009 11:22 AM

I'm going to have to wait for a price drop on this one, or the inevitable trimmed down edition, but it certainly looks like they have done a fine movie the justice it deserves.

Dang, someone finally gets it. I worked for DeBeers for 12 years and I've seen the stockpile with my own eyes!

Someone on the avsforum picked it up from Wallyworld for $19.99. I don't know the contents in detail.

"In a regular Blu Ray jewel case" was all that he posted besides the price and where.

That's good news. They also had a scaled down Woodstock Blu-ray too didnt' they?

Ashamed Pegasus 09-24-2009 11:54 AM

So Walmart has Oz in a 2-disc jewel case for $19.99?... Guess that's the one I'm buying (if it's true; nothing on their website yet)...

You guys ordering the UCE from Amazon might want to look at this post... His came boxed in bubble wrap and was still damaged in transit...

MaCruz 09-24-2009 11:54 AM

No link? It's all good. I'll check it out right now.

EDIT: These are the only versions I can find??? I don't see any BD at walmart.com for $19.99.

If they're showing it in a professional theater, it's pretty much guaranteed to be at least 2K (or 2K on a 35mm print).

HD is a TV thing, not a cinematic thing. It's worth noticing however that HDTV 1080p standard is basically the same thing as theatrical 2K standard.

And by the way, just because it appears to have no grain in a theatrical presentation doesn't mean it's been DNR'd. Low quality prints and out-of-focus projection can make the grain from the master difficult or impossible to resolve. Actually, it's probably the bad focus on the projection more than anything else. I know my local theater is terrible on focus and scarcely am I ever able to clearly see grain.

And at the same time we've got a thread here with posters complaining about WB's poor quality especially on catalog releases. Yeesh.

This was a major concern of mine, and sure enough, it was validated. I'm thankful that I didn't take the plunge.

The trimmed-down Target edition is interesting; I'll take a closer look on Tuesday morning, and stop by Wal-Mart to see if they're going to carry the UCE; as a last resort, I'll go with the Best Buy edition.

robertc88 09-24-2009 02:45 PM

If I get one of the more expensive editions, I'm not doing so through an internet retailer and having it shipped. B&M store is the way I'd go (store pickup is OK to reserve it) and I'd open it in the car in the parking lot afterwards!

robertc88 09-24-2009 02:53 PM

I'll continue to post them as I find reviews/info in my travels.

GoBlu08 09-24-2009 03:51 PM

I think I will go to target and check it out as well. If not the best buy version sounds ok.

hardtosayx 09-24-2009 05:20 PM

I saw both Target.com and Walmart.com have them as just the movie, but Target's says DVD, and Walmarts doesn't even say anything. And Walmart's isn't in store at all (supposedly)

I guess I'll wait until someone gets either one to find out what it really is
