I watched Vivre Sa Vie last night and absolutely loved it. It got me thinking though. Does anyone know the history behind why the title isn't translated (on the blu ray, etc) whereas something like Breathless is? Also, having loved both Breathless and Vivre Sa Vie I am thinking about picking up Pierrot le Fou. Anyone have a sense of what a good price for it is? I just looked around a little on Amazon marketplace, but haven't really started searching yet.

I live in a small town, and I got lucky and bought Pierrot le Fou a month ago at my local Borders with a 50% off coupon. I would look around local stores first and see if any copies are getting dusty on the shelves.

I think it mostly has to do with what the original release title was in theaters. Now why those distributors decided to release some titles translated and others not I have no idea.

Same thing is done today, really.

No. Save your money, rkish.

Thanks...I shall! ;)

I'm still on the fence with whether or not to order Tokyo Story from BFI/Amazon UK or roll the dice and hope it gets released on blu by CC.

Well, there are A LOT of Criterions to choose from to put on Blu, so who knows when it will get a release date.

It will be the first Ozu BR from Criterion. So it should be in 2011.

Try googling "nicolas cage bankrupt".

Thanks Shell! Maybe with all the money spent recently, it's worth a wait until I see what happens next year.

I would like to eventually pick up a BFI title...

Yes!! On my way out of my building to work today, I saw that I got a box from B&N, which means that my BBS set came. I snatched up the box, and brought it to work with me today. Sadly my boss seems to be making rounds, so I actually haven's taken the set out of the cardboard mailing box yet.

I finally got my BBS set yesterday. Now if only my 3 Silent Classics set by Von Sternberg would ship, my haul from the B&N sale would be complete. It's still listed as "delayed". :(

No, probably not. From reading through the review, not all of it is English friendly. Also, the picture is darker.

Well on June 20th 2011 will officially be the 5 year anniversary of blu-ray disks being released......and I don't see an end for much much longer. 5 years was how long many people predicted blu-rays would be around before it was replaced by new technology. I.e. digital distribution. In fact I dont see this happening in the next 10 years. People still simply want a physical disk and will contine to want that product for a looong time. Especially us Criterion owners. I cant imagine looking at my collection not on a shelf but in the digital world. The booklets, the cases, all gone.....Long live blu-rays and long live Criterion!

Mystery Train is a fun ride, and if you like that then it would prep you to explore some Japanese cinema :]

Bottle Rocket is a good start. That was my first. My favorites after that one are Seven Samurai and M. Do yourself a favor and check them out. There's a great big world out there of wonderful movies that happen to have been produced outside English speaking countries. Enjoy!

spudd4242 12-02-2010 04:59 PM

oh im not opposed to it.. my eye sight just isn't great at reading subtitles.. that's my only down fall.. but i promise i'll check one out!
