Used copies on Amazon are listing for $89 dollars and up. Ebay isn't much better. I wonder how high this movie is going to get. I would think at some point, sellers are going to price themselves out of the consumer market with this movie.

Jon Mulvaney told me in an email recently, what I just shared with you. I was going to make a used purchase on Ebay for a local friend and it didn't have the booklet. I emailed Jon about it and he told me I was out of luck, so I didn't make the purchase.

Less than 168 hours to go, until "Sweet Smell of Success" and "Senso." arrive. :)

Dear Jeremy,

Thanks for your email!

Hulu will have exclusive streaming rights to our films and so all of the films that are currently on Netflix streaming will be down by the end of the year.

We love Netflix, and they are still one of Criterion’s most important partners, but Hulu demonstrated a real commitment to the Criterion brand that persuaded us they would be the better home base for our streaming efforts. It has never been easy to find Criterion movies on Netflix — “Criterion” is not even a searchable term there. Compare that with Hulu’s willingness to develop a whole area of their site around us, brand the films associated with us, and develop the capability to show many of our supplements alongside our films. The energetic, independent, creative team at Hulu was willing to build their business around us in a way that just wasn’t in the cards anywhere else.

We will continue to support Netflix on the package goods side and continue to work with them to provide DVD and BD copies of the films we release.

I hope this information is helpful! Please let me know if you have any more questions and thanks for supporting Criterion!

Best,

Jon Mulvaney
So, it appears you guys that are dependent on Netflix to stream Criterion movies before buying them better start increasing the amount you watch.

Meh, kind of bad news but I'm lucky that I've already seen a good portion of the Criterions I want to buy. He is right on searching Netflix though. Their streaming searches (at least on the PS3) is rather horrid.

Guess one of these days I'll have to get around to seeing The Red Shoes.

On a side note, one Criterion I'd like to see on BD would be The Most Dangerous Game. I can think of a good amount of extras to include (various radio versions of the story, information connecting it to Kong etc.)

Beautiful! :)

That should get his attention.

I can confirm.

I received a replacement case for "The Third Man" from Criterion three weeks ago but didn't ask for a booklet.

I saw the news yesterday, and it's difficult to get excited about Criterion getting in bed with Hulu. I'm particularly amused at how Hulu Plus users must pay $10 a month and they still have to watch a smattering of ads before each feature. I refuse to do that. Even on cable, I DVR everything so I can avoid them. There's no question Netflix didn't properly present their films, because as they pointed out, you can't even search on the term Criterion. Oh well, I'll just reactivate physical media on my Netflix plan. Hulu seems like it's giving the brand the respect it deserves, so this seems like a good business move. Hope it works out well for Criterion!

I watched A SAFE PLACE from the BBS set last night. I understand a plot isn't always needed for a film to work that often the feeling it conveys is enough....

With that said, I was really disappointed. I know what Jaglom was going for but it just didn't work. It's shot in a European art style but the editing seems arbitrary-- there are cuts for no reason at all. They don't heighten the experience or convey any feeling. Without Tuesday Weld's gorgeous face to look at for 92 minutes and some great show tunes I probably would've shut it off. Also, I don't think Welles had any idea what kind of film he was in.

I rarely say a film Criterion issues is not worthy of the collection. A SAFE PLACE (and its partner on the disc DRIVE HE SAID) has no place in the collection. I'd post this on CF but they'd counter by saying thematically it fits in the set. It's a stinker, thematically or not, it has no place in the collection.

I too received a plastic replacement case for The Third Man (after a 6 week backorder). I assumed the booklets wouldn't be an option, even for discs not OOP so I didn't even bother to ask.

I'm not anti-digibook but the main problem with the Criterion version is that they lack the structural integrity of a plastic case. I bought The Third Man on eBay (a week before it went OOP :whip:) and it was shipped in one of those bubble envelopes. The plastic casing cracked during shipping. So now instead of having an OOP Criterion Blu-ray still in the shrinkwrap I have an opened but never watched OOP Criterion Blu-ray in a plastic replacement case.

I was under the impression the movies were included based on who produced them (BBS), not due to any underlying theme. I mean, what on Earth could Head share thematically with The Last Picture Show? Speaking of Head, IMO that is also a waste of disc space.

Hulu+ sounds more and more appealing...but still not sure. I'm debating changing my Netflix plan from 2 to 1 disc at-a-time and starting up the Hulu...decisions decisions...

then again, I prefer owning the movies than streaming or renting...

I'm nowhere near the point of spending money on streamed movies, but assuming someday I will be, I'm glad Criterion is going to Hulu exclusively. I've been boycotting Netflix for at least ten years now and don't plan to stop that.
