Question for those of you who still buy Criterion DVD's. What would you recommend getting? I'm thinking mostly box-sets since some of the movies will likely get a Blu-Ray release. I got the Von Sternberg set and will get the War Trilogy set and John Cassavetes Five Films set.

As for newer releases, Dillinger is Dead is a must and any of the newer Eclipse sets are excellent, if you already have some of the older ones.

You, on the other hand, are going to purchase the film regardless and then let us know repeatedly that you haven’t watched it. I don’t care if you want to buy 12 copies of every title and use the covers to make a collage of your cat. What I don’t understand is why you have to continually post how you own all the titles but have little interest in viewing them. That's my take on it since you asked for a response.

How sweet would this be on BR this summer with this poster as its cover?

With a new restoration and the somewhat recent BFI release (plus its region-locked), seems certain this should be announced soon, if not in a week or so...:ohnoes:

I also liked the transfer, but then I have a much a smaller HD TV, so it just might have looked better to me. Haven't yet watched The Leopard or Marienbad.

Agreed! It was my love of this film that forced me to give The Red Shoes a second chance, as I wasn't a big fan of it the first time around...now I love it as well! :)

Same here Shell! I will open it up to check out the packaging when I receive it, but don't typically watch it until the weekend.

The only exception is my NetFlix rentals. I typically get those on Tuesdays and Fridays, so I'll "force" myself to watch the film Tuesday night, so that I can pop it in the mailbox that same evening. That way, I'm usually assured that I'll get my next rental on Friday, which I'll usually watch EARLY Saturday morning and then mail out by 10:00 AM. This usually guarantees the next rental on Tuesday and the cycle continues.

I find that I don't fall asleep if I watch on a Saturday morning and get no interruptions, as my wife and boys are still asleep (sometimes I'm up at 6:00 AM...cup of coffee in hand. ;) ).

If Disney keeps messing with Java scripts (ie. "Alice in Wonderland"), I might have to replace my current Panny BD55 with something newer. I haven't tried Bambi yet, but I'm hopeful.

I returned a recently purchased Roku box, as I want my next player to have 5.1/7.1 analog outs and streaming capabilities. I use a Wii in my bedroom, which I currently move to my main "film watching" plasma in my living room. I won't use my region free player for anything but UK/European blu-rays and DVDs.

JediFonger 03-04-2011 06:33 PM

i've seen that... but i wouldn't call it great or classic by any means. just cause it's 1st, doesn't make it good. same w/voyage to the moon :p

i can't think of any great silent westerns.

The Great Train Robbery (1903) comes to mind, but that was only the beginning. The Western was one of the first genres established. It's a genre that lends itself well to the serial format that was popular during the silent era. And since much (most?) early cinema used books and plays as source material, the popularity of Western literature meant you had more Western cinema.

This is near the top of my list of upgrades that I want Criterion to do. I also remember reading that last year, a re-discovered Tati's English version of Mon Oncle (My Uncle)was touring around the States. So it would be natural for Criterion to release Blus of both Les Vacance and Mon Oncle in the (hopefully) near future.

While on the subject of Tati, does anyone know if Criterion has the rights to Jour de fête? It is the one Tati film I have yet to see. I'd love to see a release of both the B&W and Color on Blu. To my knowledge it never had a Region 1 DVD release, so a Criterion edition would certainly be a coup.

EDIT: In fact I'll email Jon Mulvaney about Jour de fête right now

I don't want to crap on any particular brand, but specifically one player has been the bane of my existence....
[Show spoiler] I bought a PS3 not terribly long after launch (40 GB) and then I added a second one... both died when under warranty, both were replaced under warranty, and then one died again outside of warranty, then last night the other one died, also well outside of the warranty period. Part of it that irks me, is the fact that the second one to die, probably had 30 hours IF THAT of play-time on it prior to it dying during the warranty period.... I never even played a single video game on it, then I got it back, and admit that I used it much more than I had the original one, but still no games etc... so not even close to what the "average" amount of use a PS3 probably gets, but the unit I got back just looked really "Beat up" you could tell it was cleaned up and possibly a new cover was put on it etc.... but the finish was worn away at one point, so whoever's PS3 they sent me after I sent mine (with 30 hours of use) in for repair, had a LOT of use probably.... but that's just another side-rant really to a much bigger problem.

As I said, I don't have anything against Sony... the old 36" WEGA I gave to a buddy will just not die! It's been used/abused/moved multiple times, etc... and it still has a beautiful picture (but weighs a TON) After the first PS3 died outside of warranty, I got a stand-alone sony 360 (I think that's what it was) from Costco, and then it died with very limited use... it just stopped reading discs..... and then I got a Sony BX-57 from Costco (which I still have, and love) because they gave me credit, and this one does Netflix, Pandora, and is WIFI.... Right now I'm looking at either another BX-57 or trying out a Samsung C6500 because it's only $155 from Amazon, and it does WIFI, Pandora, and Netflix too.... those are pretty much my three requirements for a player. I don't need another PS3 because I don't own any games. The Sony 360 was actually in the attic that leaked when we had roof issues, but was 12' or so away from any water, but humidity "may" have been a cause, but I just know that it stopped working the next time I tried to use it after setting up a new HT in our addition, and that was about 2+ months after the water leaked..... I had been using the remaining PS3 that worked in the living room during the time it took to prep the new HT etc... It really wasn't humid etc... so I really don't think the water damage to our roof was related to the player dying, but just giving full-disclosure here :D

So, summary.... I've had 2 PS3s that both died 2 times for a total of 4 failures, plus I had a Sony 360 die..... I would never get another PS3, but like I said, the Sony BX-57 is still probably on top of my list, so I am not some crazy "Sony-hater" I actually think Sony makes great products (not a fan of their AVRs, Speakers etc... but think they make great T.V.s, and Projectors and pretty much every other "small" appliance with their name on it.... I'm not ready to say their BD players aren't good yet, I do know that the PS3 just isn't for me though.

After a couple of expensive ones have died, my wife sees these things as "disposable" in the sense that you use them for awhile, and just have to replace them anyways, so she'd never let me spend 300+ again.

EDIT:

Which is sad, because I ALMOST had her talked into an OPPO-83 for our last player, but ended up with a different player that did everything we needed it to, because she saw it at Costco with a coupon..... (she doesn't actually want me to have a Region-Free player because she knows what that will mean in terms of my monthly movie purchases!!!!)

I'm considering a Panasonic DMP-BDT300PU. NOT at all for the 3D, but since it'll do analog outs (5.1/7.1) and streaming. I won't buy their TVs anymore after a VERY bad experience with their technical support dept., but they still make a good, fairly affordable blu-ray player. Just waiting for my tax check. ;)

And YES Beta...multi region will drain your wallet. In addition to my Momitsu BD player, I bought my wife a fairly cheap Toshiba "all region" DVD player, as it gives her access to UK releases of her favorite British TV shows and for the most part, they are cheaper than their US equivalents.

Well, #25 is coming soon, so maybe you can pick up the other 24 while you wait. :D

I haven't seen ANY of this...but since it probably won't see a BD release, you may want to consider Berlin Alexanderplatz. If you catch it during a 50% off sale, it will be in the $60 range.

Also rentable on NetFlix. ;)

PS...Beta might persuade you to consider the AK100 set. ;)

EDIT: Just thought of "Night Train to Munich", "Louie Bluie", and "Dillenger is Dead". You're welcome SpiderBaby! ;)

BTW...LOVE the von Sternberg set! :D

Absolutely not..... If your goal is to expand your exposure to "new" things, I wouldn't put that many eggs in one basket..... (but it is a great set)

i can't think of any great silent westerns.

"Classic", "great" and "good" are words with many definitions, at least one of which would apply to the earliest major film of a particular genre. If the first Western ever made isn't classic then what is? That doesn't mean it's necessarily a good movie, but then hardly any silent movies are really good by today's standards.

Pretty much, get Dillinger is Dead. Screw what you should have (same ol' classics/film school basics), and go with what is just plain awesome. You can fly right past the Snob jrs who are stuck on the Breathless/400 Blows/Seven Samurai/Seventh Seal yawns and jump right into something like Marco Ferreri.

Home Vision Cinema released the VHS version and it used to be that a lot of that stuff later appeared as Criterion dvds. However, the fact that they never released Jour de Fete and did so many of his others means perhaps not. Let us know if you get an answer.

g.schweet 03-04-2011 08:36 PM

They did release Jour de fête on laserdisc.

And lou if you've seen The School for Postmen short on the Mon Oncle CC DVD, then you've at least seen a bit of Jour de fête as the whole short is pretty much redone in the feature.
