I like those two films as examples of stories that may be done repeatedly, but the technical aspects of them make them special to their given genres....

The 400 Blows is something I somewhat agree with you on.... very enjoyable, but I have many more 'essentials' in the way of French-new-wave that I prefer over it.

That is true; these films are more accessible than many titles in the Criterion Collection. I think their plot lines may be too straightforward for me to really get excited about them, though. Most of my favorite films require a bit of effort on the part of the viewer to understand and appreciate them. Some of my favorite titles in The Criterion Collection are The Double Life of Veronique, Walkabout, Videodrome, and Repulsion. Although strangely enough, I fell in love with Modern Times.

So: forgot I had added Black Narcissus to an order to take advantage of the $23 price and also get free shipping with another item. Just thought I'd ask you criterion educated fellas how this film stands. What say the CCD masses? (I don't mean to stray from the current topic of Criterions announcement ;))

That one was a great surprise for me! Excellent movie, and the disc does justice to the exquisite cinematography (well, which Criterion disc doesn't?)

I'm there SB! A German silent...looks intriguing.

You sold me on the von Sternberg silents...

Have you seen this before? I'll assume you have. ;)

Well, you did caught me on a good release day, so I guess that has something to do with it.;)

I received this too...... and I have a question for you.... I was purchasing something on Amazon this morning, and found a $10 Promo-credit that I didn't know I had.... I went to my email, had this email about Topsy-Turvy (the only Criterion title I have on order with them right now, because it's the only one I forgot to order during Criterion's sale) but it mentions nothing of giving me a $10 promo.... Do you have any promo-$$ on your account????

Amazon is odd about giving $5 or $10 promo-discounts and never even telling you!!!!!

EDIT:

And yes Italy, I can count... I was merely referring to the shapes/colors they chose to use.... but I agree that the cover wouldn't fit with the story, and the similarities to the Seven Samurai would be awkward at the least.

Sorry it took so long to respond to you, Beta. Reaaallly long day at work today. Major capital project is having problems, so no movie watching for me for awhile. At least my job is exciting. Anyway, I don't use my office computer to log on to forums, so I am just now sitting down at home.

No, I didn't get any Amazon promo bucks. Just the email stating the release was delayed two weeks. I can't complain, though. Lately, I have had several Amazon Prime orders arrive weeks late or not at all, so in compensation Amazon gave me $40 in my account, which I promptly used to pre-order Criterions in April and May (missed the Criterion sale due to work travel). Amazon customer service is pretty cool.

Really hoping Criterion.com releases a coupon code soon.

The 'must see', though? Yeah, that was a little unexpected.

Not really that unexpected if you know of his love for the silents. ;)

I don't know if you all read the Kino thread but they should be releasing the Sergei Eisenstein silent Strike in the summer too, which again, is great news. This I haven't seen, but I love me my Soviet Union films, almost as much as Godards'.

JediFonger 03-16-2011 04:44 AM

i'm most excited about Ivan the Terribles and hopefully Nevsky sooner or later =). seen almost all of Eisenstein.

I enjoy films that I have seen multiple times, and still don't "Get", assuming they're presented in a way that keeps me wanting to know more.... And I also enjoy physical humor and other things that are straight forward..... If the film accomplishes what it sets out to do, which is "entertainment" , then I'm not too particular about the methods it uses.

I like to think that I'm open to most genres etc.... but admittedly I have a great deficiency of "comedy" in my collection because many comedies just don't hold up well to multiple viewings for me..... "Modern Times" would certainly fall into the category of comedies I'm glad to own though, and look forward to many more Chaplin films going forward.

Shame there aren't any older Criterions that they're putting out on Blu. None of the others interest me all that much, but I'll probably end up getting one or two of 'em when the time comes.

VoodooSamurai 03-16-2011 06:32 AM

Wow I didn't think Insignificance would ever see DVD let alone blu-ray.
Gives me hope for Roeg's Castaway and Eureka, if those hit blu I could die happy :naughty:

Why? How many copies of the same movie do you need? Getting NEW releases>>>rehashes just so people can say "shiny".

Need? I would imagine somewhere around none.

As for how many copies I'd like, in many cases the answer is at least one more.

*shrug*

Kiss Me Deadly confirmed for June 21. That's made me very happy indeed, time to say goodbye to my non-anamorphic MGM DVD.

Doesn't matter for me. I started getting Criterions when I got a Blu-ray player.

Same here, although I always wanted to collect the Criterion dvds, for some reason I never did. Perhaps the sheer number made it too intimidating. So when Blu hit, I figured it was now or never. I always rented before, but I do my best to get all of the releases that seem interesting to me on release day. Still have a bunch to get though.
