I suspect this may not be the most popular thing to admit, but High and Low, along with Red Beard, is my favourite Kurosawa. Really pleased to see this being released on blu.

It's from the Criterion site directly. The font used for Ray's name doesn't look right imo.

SpiderBaby 04-15-2011 08:03 PM

After I said the Ray better not be a Something Wild type cover, they did it.

Days of Heaven really dissapointed me as well. Shock Corridor had a great doc but nothing else really. There are more that I can't think of at the moment. Also, EVERY Criterion should have a commentary track. There are many that don't, and I think it is ridiculous.

Compare the special features on Modern Times and The Thin Red Line with that of Revanche, Shock Corridor, or Days of Heaven, for example. Huge difference, but still the same price. Yes, the film is the most important part, but with the Criterion prices, you'd expect them to all maintain a certain level of value. Anybody else feel where I'm coming from?

Well, it also depends on IF there are any special features even available. Shock Corridor was a low budget 60s B movie... i doubt there are a ton of extras even available for a title like that. They USED to have alternate pricing for discs with lesser features, and even did (if i recall) when they first started releasing blu-rays.

Agreed.... I've been holding off buying the DVD for an inevitable BD release but it seems like they're releasing the rest of Kurosawas filmography before they get around to rashomon (Clearly I'm joking in an exaggerated manner)...... but come on!

biglou114 04-15-2011 08:05 PM

I'll definitely upgrade my DVD of Beauty and the Beast.

moody41 04-15-2011 08:09 PM

Leon Morin was a bit of a surprise. Glad to have more Melville although was hoping for Le Samouraļ.

I may order this directly from Criterion to show my appreciation.

I never thought this one would make it.
