I'm trying to decide where to start my collection. I've got Sweet Smell of Success and Robinson Crusoe on Mars within my Blu-ray sights.

Check out Charade - It's a fun comedy thriller. There are scenes of death but none are graphic and the language is kept liberal. I thoroughly enjoyed this, it was very entertaining and had a few hitchcock-esque twists in it.

Wings of Desire I highly recommend, Its one of my favorites. Its a beautiful film and really does make you appreciate things afterwards. I am always in a much better mood after watching it.

Jacques Tati's PLAY TIME, Chaplin's MODERN TIMES, John Ford's STAGECOACH, Louis Malle's AU REVOIR LES EFANTS or perhaps James Ivory's HOWARDS END.

How is that worse than 'Mike Leigh's Naked'? I mean, it exactly says: "Mike Leigh's Naked."

Quilty 04-15-2011 09:03 PM

and check out Anti-Christ - definitely nothing objectionable about it ;)

bingtau 04-15-2011 09:03 PM

Yes

Yes, give me Naked and More Kurosawa. I love High and Low. Naked was one of my top ten blu's I was waiting for as well as High and Low. Perfecto. Can't wait.:ohnoes:

I didn't.

Arkadin 04-15-2011 09:13 PM

good symmetry for July--:)
3 upgrades and 3 new to the collection titles.
that's the kind of month I think I like the best.
nice to finally get another true old school classic with the Cocteau release.
far too few of those type announcements from the current "new-school" Criterion imo. ;)

myka22 04-15-2011 09:25 PM

Well I am glad we are getting another Kurosawa. I love his samurai films, but it is nice they are giving us something else, and High & Low is a great film. It has a lot of beautiful shots towards the end that should look great on Blu.

iam1bearcat 04-15-2011 09:25 PM

never heard of any of these. hell, i think maybe 1 out of 10 films they announce i've heard of lol

Then you might want to stick with cartoons/kids movies. I'd recommend Marmaduke and The Pink Panther.

Pyoko 04-15-2011 09:34 PM

Yes, finally a non-samurai Kurosawa! Will also pick up The Music Room and possibly the Melville.

Beta Man 04-15-2011 09:53 PM

I guess I'm late as usual....

I see four titles for July up on their site..... is this all for the month, or have they not updated others?

EDIT:

High and Low, and Salo too I guess?

EDIT AGAIN:

No... "Naked" not Salo... who said Salo? Man you can get behind in this thread fast!

6

The Music Room
Léon Morin, Priest
Life During Wartime

and upgrades of

Beauty and the Beast
Naked
High and Low

2-3 for me is a good month IMO. The Music Room and upgrading Beauty and the Beast for sure. Might get Leon Morin.

I forgot about Ray. I have never seen any of his films, but love the history and culture of India. (as well as lush B&W photography) This is a no brainer. Thanks.

Der Spieler 04-15-2011 10:01 PM

High and Low on Blu-ray = day 1 buy.

I'll probably get the Melville too.

keldons 04-15-2011 10:51 PM

Ray, Leigh, Cocteau, cool.

But cmon, more Kurosawa? There are other notable Japanese filmmakers that have no Blu releases yet when he has what, 5 now?

McCrutchy 04-15-2011 10:52 PM

I'm just happy that the July 12th release date probably means Naked will be in the 50% off sale if it's in July. If not, it comes out literally a week before my birthday...
