Anyone check their gold box today? Only ordered 2 movies yesterday from the sale and now I've got 6 criterions, 3 of which are of the on sale items. This is making it hard for me to limit myself to just 2. Kes and Amarcord are showing up right now.

Any thoughts on "Eclipse 8 - Lubitsch Musicals" that is on the sale too ? Already bought the Silent Naruse and Basil Dearden's London Underground, but now i see this, and i'm seriously thinking about putting my hands on it. Never seen a Lubitsch musical, though i love his later films like Trouble in Paradise and The Shop Around the Corner.
Should i get it ? Anyone ? Bueller ? :ohnoes:

Over/Under on no. of days until someone inevitably asks: When is the next BN sale?

If I was a betting man, I'd say under 1.

That reminds me, when is the next BN sale? ;)

Watched Blow Out last night (a favorite film of mine) and the transfer is fantastic. I also enjoyed the interview between Baumbach and De Palma.

The Criterion sale on Amazon is great!

I ended up picking up a few myself. I have been working on getting all of the OOP Criterions before devoting too much time to the current ones. If all is well, I now have the last of the OOP titles ordered and are just awaiting their arrival in the mail.

Anyway, I picked up the following from the current sale.

Fish Tank
Yojimbo & Sanjuro
M
The Naked Kiss
The Leopard
Shock Corridor
Army of Shadows
Broadcast News
Still Walking
Amarcord
Blow Out

I would like to have picked up all of the on sale films...but alas...my wallet says NO!:whip::p

Hendershot737 04-27-2011 04:21 PM

Furiously debating whether to pull the trigger on:

Sweet Smell of Success
The Leopard
The Red Shoes

ugh! I hate money...stupid gas prices...and food :p

(though Blow Out, White Material and Kes have been shipped/or will ship soon ;))

I don't think this has been covered in the last couple of days. There's a lot of hoopla over the Blu-ray sale (sadly, the eight titles I don't have aren't part of the sale.) But then the Eclipse titles slipped in there too.

I've been peeking around, but has anyone found any DVDs with serious markdowns as part of the Criterion sale?

JediFonger 04-27-2011 05:30 PM

here are the latest batch i'm getting that i don't plan to watch:
-Blow Out
-Broadcast News
-Kes
-Naked Kiss
-Senso
-Shock Corridor
-Topsy Turvy

although i have seen Topsy before, great film!

Yami 04-27-2011 05:40 PM

I couldn't spend that much money and not watch them.

Wait: you're buying movies you don't wanna watch? What's the point?

He's just being honest about the fact that he'll never get around to actually watching them.

I've got probably 5 unwatched Criterions in my collection, and probably 4 or 5 other films I haven't watched on Blu-ray, and probably another 15 or so unwatched DVDs.....

I always remain optimistic when I order something, that I'll watch it the day I get it..... it just rarely happens that way :(

greekak229 04-27-2011 06:17 PM

I really wish I could get Kes, but I don't have the money now. I got a $75 Amazon gift card for my birthday last month, but I used it to pre-order Great Dictator, Diabolique, and I Saw The Devil. Oh, well. Eventually.

I mean, you're buying them just because they'll look good on your shelf, right ?

Do a search of "Criterion" and sort by price Low-High

Unfortunately that includes Amazon Marketplace prices, that brings up about 45 pages of VHS tapes for $1 that are mistakenly labeled Criterion.

Then click new on the left and prime eligible, I think that's the method I usually use.

You can also search "criterion collection dvd." If you do that, at the top of the list will be a link that says "Explore the Criterion Collection" or something like that. Click that link and sort by price. Doing so pretty much gets rid of most the other junk. At least that is what I have done in the past.

Good call. Thanks. Oh, and to answer the original question. No, no DVDs in the promo. That's OK.

I buy them for the covers. I love to collect Criterions. Someday I might watch one but I don't dig B&W movies without any explosions :(

I read that some are also in French or Japanese. What's up with that!?

swap out I Saw the Devil for Kes. You won't be sorry. I Saw the Devil is one of the worst films I've seen in a long time.
