See, and people think you're not open-minded...

Decided to blind-buy Pale Flower. Hope me likes.

I had no trouble (in fact I rather enjoyed) blind-buying Kes, White Material, most America Lost and Found and The Leopard a couple weeks ago but a $28 blind buy seems like madness, I tell you, madness.

God I could save a lot of money if I ever figure me out.

Lets not forget Pulp Fiction, Face/Off, Boy in the plastic bubble, Get Shorty, Thin Red Line, Generals Daughter, and Bolt. All respectable roles at least.

And I probably shouldn't admit this on a public forum, but really liked "From Paris With Love" as well. Sure, it's big, dumb, and loud but its also a lot of fun. Travolta's WAY over the top performance in there had me laughing all the way. :p :D

Everyone seems to forget Primary Colors. He was perfectly cast for that role. Easily his most overlooked performance. In recent years he's been garbage though.

octagon 05-15-2011 05:03 AM

Good call on Primary Colors. Emma Thompson was really good too.

Either way you spent more money on blind-buying than I did.

Oh, I know it makes no sense. That was kind of my point;)

Haha, yeah, I know. :D I usually feel good about blind-buying Criterions though. I'm rarely ever disappointed.

octagon 05-15-2011 05:11 AM

I've been pretty lucky too. I've bought a couple I'm not entirely crazy about but with the possible exception of Howard's End I'm glad I have them to go back to. And even Howard's End was a good film, I'm just not sure I'll ever watch it again.

Yeah, I see what you mean. While I love my Criterions, there's a few that I've only seen once or twice, where I'm not sure if I'll have the desire to watch them again, like Red Desert or Close-up. Either way, I like having them around. I do have multiple Criterions that I watch constantly like 400 Blows and Paths and SSOS.

The only blind buy I regret was Army of Shadows, just couldn't get into this movie, yet I love Melville's other work.

I actually liked Army of Shadows a little more than Le Cercle Rouge, but they're both pretty rad.

I much preferred Le Cercle Rouge to be honest, but Le Samourai is head and shoulders above both in my opinion.

I think I might have to agree with you on that one. Hoping for a Blu-ray release of that somewhere down the road soon.

I just watched Shoot the Piano Player. When are we gonna get this on blu?!

This is one of my all time favorite movies, especially love the ending.

octagon 05-15-2011 10:17 AM

I just finished Kes and it definitely goes into the 'excellent blind buy' pile.

One minor quibble - I know separate English and English SDH subs seem redundant with an English language film but this was definitely one of those cases where English was a foreign language. I would have very much appreciated straight English subs without the SDH content.

What a great freaking film though. I kept waiting for it to get manipulative or melodramatic but it never went too far. Not being beaten over the head or talked down to was a nice change of pace.

Jumpman 05-15-2011 12:44 PM

Anyone know when Criterion is going to release the Blu Ray edition of the Last Days of Disco, considering it was a recently DVD release?

Love that film.

Antonmassacre1 05-15-2011 01:04 PM

I thought Kes was a fantastic film as well. Without the subs I wouldn't have caught about 40% of the dialogue so you raise a valid point.
