Spoiler alert I guess... (Seven Samurai)
The character that single handedly retrieves the musket from the bandits is such a well written/perfectly acted role. The esteem the youngest member holds him in, the humility/wisdom and strength that emanates from his persona is one thing that makes Seven Samurai the masterpiece it is. (among so many others) I love the scene when this samurai (Kyuzo) returns from his overnight mission and sits down to get some rest. (the interaction between him and the young samurai) |

September 1984.
Should we start posting our Social Insurance Numbers as well? |
Just finished watching The Great Dictator. Chaplin gave his usual outstanding performance, and the supporting cast was also wonderful.
I was happy to see Maurice Moscovich, as I love him in Make Way for Tomorrow. That makes two Caplin masterpieces, bring on the rest. |

Just added Naked and Diabolique to the list. Diabolique's listed as a pre-order on my page as it won't ship from Amazon Canada until Naked, and my other pre-order, There But For Fortune, a Phil Ochs documentary that's only out on DVD, ship. Naked was 70 cents cheaper, and Diabolique was around a dollar more. Hopefully the postal strike will be cleared up by then. Slowly, but surely, I'm picking off my Criterion wish list.
Edit: Forgot to add, the booklet for Monterey Pop has a teeny tear in it, like it got pushed up against the case. I'm not going to bother complaining since it was an import, and I'm more concerned about the film anyways. It's nice to have the booklets, but I'm not as fussy as some of you fellow Criterion fans. :) Too bad I have to wait until tomorrow to watch it, as my parents don't have a player yet. They're getting one when they go to the states though. Also, FYI, TCM is showing Black Narcissus on Tuesday night if anyone's afraid of blind buying it. They showed The Sweet Smell of Success yesterday, but I forgot about it since I just watched my own copy. |

P.S. Any chance of BADLANDS coming to Criterion, you think? They've already done DAYS OF HEAVEN and THE THIN RED LINE, after all... |
I was finally going to pull the trigger on the Fanny and Alexander import but noticed both Amazon and this site have a listing for it. Has it even been hinted at by Criterion?

Anyone else seen Tree of Life yet? Saw it today and it was wonderful, though it wont change anyone's minds on Malick. If you like his style, you'll love it, and if you think he sucks you'll think it sucks.
Not to mention, with the rumors about Badlands heading to Criterion with Malick's help, and Criterion posting quite a bit of Tree of Life coverage on Facebook and Twitter, I would not be surprised to see Criterion put this film out sometime next year. |
The cosmos sequences go on for far too long, and it doesn't have any purpose in the story. In fact it detracts from the movie, and any connection we have to the family. You could remove all of those scenes and the movie wouldn't change a bit. It looked great though.

The artwork for Kiss Me Deadly is up over at Criterionforum.org. I love it, the cover of the booklet looks great.
