I'd recommend trying to see it before you buy, but if you like other Godard films, you might like this.
I blind-bought it about a year ago and quite enjoyed it. I'll get around to re-watching it soon, I hope.

There is a Barnes and Noble Criterion Sale thread. I know trying to separate these two is like pulling teeth and you can't really expect results, but try to share your lists of what you want in there. There's JUST as many people in that thread talking about it.

Changing the subject, I just looked on ebay at prices for The Third Man, just out of curiosity, and holy cow am I glad I jumped on that movie when I did. A new copy is WELL over $100 now. It's insanity.

Plus, has anyone seen Senso? What are your opinions on it? I'm hoping to watch it sometime tonight or tomorrow.

It's a lot of fun. It gets better with each viewing. It's a safe bet for you, imo.

It's not on bluray, but what are your thoughts on Band of Outsiders? I own Breathless, Vivre sa vi and Pierrot le fou. While I liked those movies, my favorite Criterion I've watched so far this year has been Double Life of Veronique. I can't wait for the Blue White Red box set. Hope that give a little insight into my Criterion likes and dislikes.

The B&N sale with the 10% coupon is a good deal, especially for those from Canada. I just ordered

Army of Shadows
Bigger Than Life
Fat Girl
Hunger
Pale Flower
Stagecoach

They're all blind buys for me. What do you guys think of that set of films? What should I expect from these discs?

I've never seen Band of Outsiders, but would love to. I'll jump on it, if it gets an upgrade.
Pierrot is an odd film, as you'd probably expect from Godard. An esoteric style and only very loosely a narrative film. Its got a great pop-art aesthetic and Anna Karina is always great. I'm sure she can act, but her big, beautiful eyes completely cloud my judgement :lovesight:
I'm pretty sure we're not the only ones waiting for that Three Colours trilogy :D

Yeah I did that recently too--makes me feel good about jumping on it for $75 a few months back.

Senso was fantastic. Not as good as The Leopard (my love of Burt Lancaster is showing here), but it was still fantastic. The costumes were gorgeous. I recommend it, and The Leopard. Watch them back to back as it's a really great historic period (1840s-1860s) that both films take place in, and Luchino Visconti's movies are highly enjoyable. They compliment each other quite well.

And Naked becomes the first of likely many from the Criterion sale. Beauty and the Beast next week!

The Dark Uniter 07-12-2011 04:11 PM

Ordered and preordered Antichrist, High and Low and Seven Samurai. 2 weeks from now, I'll get House and Yojimbo/ Sanjuro.

I love The Double Life of Veronique. The Criterion BD was the fourth time I purchased the film (R2 LE DVD, Criterion DVD, Artificial Eye BD and finally Criterion BD). For a long time, it wasn't even available on DVD. I'm hanging on to my R2 DVD because it came with an actual film strip from the film. I am really looking forward to the Three Colors Trilogy, which I've never seen. I was tempted many times to pick up the Miramax DVDs, but somehow I held out.

I like Band of Outsiders, but I'm not crazy about it. It is a film that exudes "cool", with some scenes that are now iconic. DLoV is a film with a lot of strong emotions, and most of Godard's films aren't like that. I would recommend Chungking Express by Wong Kar-Wai if you haven't seen it (and Fallen Angels, released on Blu by Kino).

Do'h! Forgot "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" when I ordered... Cancelled all previously ordered items and re-ordered including Robinson Crusoe.

So, 17 movies for the 50% off sale and 6 movies bought last week during the b2g1 sale. :)

Banned User 07-12-2011 05:21 PM

Because I want others to suffer as I do reading them ;) I present le list:

People on Sunday
Leon Morin
The Raven-DVD
Black Moon
Solaris

Trying to take it easy this year. There are quite a few I am on the fence about since I've never seen them. Is Leon the only available preorder?

mediocre 07-12-2011 05:23 PM

Anybody else going in-store and finding they still have their "Buy 2, Get 1 Free" signing up?

I went to pick up two Criterions and saw the signing. Asked the employee and she said it actually ended yesterday but since the signs were still up, let me grab another movie for free.

The haul:

Bottle Rocket Criterion for 50% off

The Darjeeling Limited for 50% off

and the added bonus of getting Evil Dead 2 (not a Criterion) for free.

Spent a little over $40. Good stuff.

Monty70 07-12-2011 05:49 PM

Found all three Criterion titles I was looking for today at B&N. Staff was very helpful in finding what I asked for. :)

Dosto 07-12-2011 06:04 PM

I kinda went crazy with the MoC sale so I ended up picking only "Kiss Me Deadly" and "High and Low".

If you own those Godards and enjoy them then I see no reason why you won't enjoy Band of Outsiders (although some around here might contend it's too popular to enjoy and you should focus your attention on lesser-known Godards ;)). Plus, yes, Karina is quite beautiful in it.

Possibly - my plastic bag solution is completely unscientific...going on the theory that anything is better than nothing :)
